Every year at this time--between November 3 and November 15--I am reminded of the great joy Nicholas and Alexandra felt when they became parents of their very first child . . . the same joy felt by many parents around the globe and throughout history. I am reminded that Olga, like all of us, did not fully comprehend her situation and what made her different from other people. For many years she was simply a young girl, growing up in a loving family, and unaware of the tremendous chasm between her life's situation and that of so many other Russian girls her own age.

Eventually Olga developed the sensibilities of someone who might truly have made a difference in the world. She was thoughtful, generous, and what today we would call "pro-active." She had the ability to put herself in the shoes of others--a reverse Cinderella who believed in the power of work, in the written word, and in living by example. As the eldest child, she was loving and increasingly maternal to her younger siblings. As a maturing woman, she gave her heart to a man who had proven himself to be a real-life hero. Then, upon realizing the situation was impossible, she witnessed, with fortitude, his marriage to another woman, and subsequently made friends with her beloved's wife.

Olga's life has significance for what it was, and for what it might have been. And she reminds us, too, that so many others--not as famous as she, but of her age--were also lost in war and revolution . . . and continue, at this very minute, to be in jeopardy. How might we best honor Olga and her family? By working toward a time when no one in the world will go hungry, or suffer for medical attention, or lack an education that gives him or her the ability to help others. For when we extend helpful hands--minus the attachment of ideological strings--we thwart those who seek totalitarian states. By helping others selflessly, rather than for our own economic gain, we demonstrate that we not only recognize our commonalties, but also--with grace--accept our differences.

Happy Birthday, not only to Olga, but to all the children, born at this time, who will inherit the world we are creating for them.

Excellently said, Janet!

Happy Birthday, HIH Tsarevna Olga Romanova, to a life snuffed out too soon, to what was and what might have been. And to the love in her heart, the kind of love that (as her Father told her) is the only thing that can conquer evil. The Soviets have fallen, their crimes and ideology fallen on the ashheaps of history while Olga is now St.Olga and glorified with the saints with churches and prayers in her honor. Love over evil indeed.

I know this might sound silly, but everytime I see photos of the Tsars daughters olga is the most beautiful !  Could it be that beauty changes ?  She always appears more handsome than her sisters. Tatiana does keep quite an elegant pose. But marie does nothing and Anastasia  is Okay.  Said she died so young F.

Here is a poem for you...I did not write it, so please if you know tell me who did so i can give them credit!

The senior grand duchess
the eldest of the doomed
depressed, sad, forgotten
full with understanding
and worry
cannot control her life
Olga the old
Olga the young
she will always be the same

blue~the color of her eyes
red~the color of her spilt blood
white~the color of her lace dress
gray~the color of her life
brown~the color of her long thick hair
green~the color of her garden
yellow~the color of her brooch
purple~the color of her heart
black~the color of her last breath
tan~the color of her pure skin
pink~the color of her rosy lips

Your Blue World
Through your blue world
You glimpse the future
Grasping it in your palms
You open them wide

Close your eyes
And you shall see
The color blue
And all that you will be

You pray for salvation
A tear rolls down your ashen face
You hear music
Or is that gunfire?

You walk through the abandoned hallway
You stumble blindly
You find the secret garden
You hide the key

Blessed are the shallow
Depth they'll never find
You hope that somewhere
The door will be mine

These are the corridors you used to run down
Now they are dark and haunting
You are afraid
You run for safety

Your hair snags on limbs and thorns
You are no longer safe
They are coming
Where are they now?

You are lost
You are forgotten
The light has been snuffed out
The candle has been disposed

Close the wound and clean the scar
Heal the twisted limbs
They have all passed away
On the hard bloody floor

I will live on.

You are correct. Little Grand Duchess Olga (actually, Rather Large) arrived at 9:00pm on November 3rd, 1918 (old calender)

You're right, clock! November 3rd is Olga's birthday according to the old Julian Calendar, and for the modern-day Gregorian Calendar it is November 16th.  ;)

may be a little early, but i started a new thread for her birthday!!

November 3rd/16th is the day that Grand Duchess Olga was born. She died young, but we will always remember her for her generosity, kindness, and compassionate heart.

"Her beautiful, gentle hands handled any job with ease and cleverness. She is so fragile and gentle as she bends with particular love and care over every soldier's shirt that she sews. Her musical voice, her graceful movements, her lovely, thin little figure - it is the essense of femininity and friendliness. She is so bright and joyful"

I'll keep you in my heart, and you are an inspiration to us all. You'll always be with us.

RIP, dear Grand Duchess Olga

Please note that dead people do not have birthdays but rather anniversaries of their birth.

Is this the anniversary of the late grand duchess' birth according to the Julian Calendar or the Gregorian Calendar?

David has a point. Also, it should be noted that we're in a new century now so the anniversary of Olga Nikolaevna's birth on November 3 (Old Style, Julian calendar) would now be November 17 (New Style, Gregorian calendar). That's because in the twenty-first century the Julian calendar is 14 days behind the Gregorian one. In the twentieth century it was 13 days behind, and in the nineteenth, when Olga was born, it was twelve days behind. So you can do the math: when Olga was born in 1895, her birthday was Nov. 3/15; beginning in 1900, it was Nov. 3/16; and now, in 2006, it's Nov. 3/17.

Nabokov has an amusing passage in his memoirs, Speak Memory, where he discusses the confusion arising over his own birthday because of the difference between the Julian and Gregorian calendars.

I wish to pay respect to Olga as many others do, but he has a point, as Elisabeth said. It's not even her birthday yet...isn't it a wee bit early?  ;)

I will never understand that.  :o If I did the math correctly (math is by far my worst subject), will she have been born 40,515 days ago on November 16, or 17, using the Gregorian calender? I don't see how someone's birthday date can change every century. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just trying to help myself understand.

This is an excellent resource for those trying to understand the two systems of calendars:

Old style - New style date converter: http://5ko.free.fr/en/jul.php (http://5ko.free.fr/en/jul.php)

By the way, I will speed up my work on the Russian date article that I have been working on for the Forum FAQ. If it was finished this would be a great place to preview it.

November 3 Old Style is still November 16 New Style in the 21st Century. I don't know how the calendar slips dates, but I think it may be only every 400 years that it changes. It's definately not every century. It only changes because the Julian Calendar is 365 days long (except in leap years - but the system for working that out is a bit different), the Gregorian calendar is 365.25 days long or something like that.

I think it's absolutely fine for the birthday thread to be a little bit early. What's the problem in just a couple of extra weeks to post loving messages to Olga? I think it's great.
David, dead people do indeed have birthdays, even if they don't get a year older. I looked up "birthday" in the dictionary and it says: Birthday: The day of a person's birth: a day of origin: an anniversary of a birth.
So, you see...it's the same thing. ;)
Everywhere I've ever looked says Olga Nicholaievna's birthday was on November 15th. And I read it in diaries and letters of the family as well. So that's the date I will be celebrating it..

Her birthday is November 3. She, her family etc all celebrated her BD on November 3. To them the date was always November 3, no matter that in the west when she was born that same day was called November 15, and in the west by the time she was 5 that same day happened to be called in the west November 16. To Russians it was still November 3. Time is very arbitrary.

No, her birthday is not on this Friday - you misunderstand. The Orthodox calendar is 13 days behind the western one. For Olga, her birthday was November 3, granted, but in the west that same day was November 15 in the 19th Century, November 16 in the 20th and 21st Centuries. Her birthday is not for another couple of weeks.

Think of it like a really BIG time zone -- when it's November 3 for Orthodox Russians, it's November 16 for the rest of us.  Just like when it's 3:00pm in New York, it's noon in California.  ;) It's the same moment, but we label it differently depending on where we live.

LOL Margarita!

As for the Macedonian Church - I would presume that they, like the Serbian Orthodox Church use the Old Calendar for religious purposes. The Greeks however switched to the Western Calendar in the 1920s (amid a lot of controversy). The easiest was to find out is to ask her when her Church has Christmas  - December 25 or January 7? January 7 on the western calendar corresponding to December 25 on the Old Calendar. (BTW America and Britain used the old calendar until some time in the 1700s.)

Sorry to disappoint you Aussiechick, but Olga's birthday hasn't been on November 15 according to the Western calendar since the end of the 19th century. From 1901 onwards, while Olga herself celebrated on November 3 according to the Russian Calendar, in western Europe and elsewhere the date was (and is) November 16.

I was just thinking. When someone mentioned the drawing of the boy reading that Olga did and refered to it as the spirit of Olga I thought. Maybe those who wish to honor her birthday could donate a new children's book to their local library and ask that a plate be put in it in her memory.

Just a thought.

GD Xenia's Diary, 15th November 1895 : 'The birth of a daughter (Olga) to Nicky and Alix! A great joy, although it's a pity it's not a son. The birth pains began already last night. At 10 o'clock we went to Tsarskoe. Poor Nicky and Mama were quite weak with exhaustion. The baby is huge ~ weighing ten pounds ~ and had to be pulled out with forceps! A terrible thing to witness. But thank God everything ended well. I saw dear Alix, she looks well; little Olga lay next to her on the bed'.

.....Not the most overwhelming of welcomes for Olga from her Aunt Xenia! I see that 'Nicky and Mama' were 'weak with exhaustion' ~ what about the Mother and Daughter....?

Exactly 112 years later, we still remember Olga's birthday  and recall with affection the brief life of the 'O' in OTMA.

It Is Her Imperial Highness Grand Duchess Olga Nicholaievna Romanova

Instead of counting candles,
Or tallying the years,
Contemplate your blessings,
As your birthday nears.

Consider special people
Who love you, and who care,
And others who’ve enriched your life
Just by being there.

Think about the memories
Passing years can never mar,
Experiences great and small
That have made you who you are.

Another year is a happy gift,
So cut your cake, and say,
"Instead of counting birthdays,
I count blessings every day!"

So if you were going to celebrate her birthday, what would be the most accurate date to her birth? The 15th or 16th?
Title: Re: Anniversary of Olga's birthday -- post tributes & memorial messages here!
Post by: NAOTMAA Fan on November 27, 2007, 04:08:40 PM
Well I mean it was the 15th in 1895...but then it got bumped up a day because of the calendar change in 1900. I still would consider it the 15th I'd suppose....or maybe you could celebrate both days?!?!

November 3 on the Julian calendar is November 16 on the Gregorian and has been since the start of the 20th century. Olga herself would have celebrated on what was for her the 3rd of November, but as far as people living in Western countries, she would have been celebrating on their 16th of November (at least after 1900). It really isn't a complicated thing. I read in many places that Russian Orthodox celebrate Christmas on 7 January. That is not true - Christmas is celebrated on 25 December - on the Julian calendar. The fact that that date is 7 January on a different calendar does not mean much.
Title: Re: Anniversary of Olga's birthday -- post tributes & memorial messages here!
Post by: RealAnastasia on December 04, 2007, 10:25:35 PM
Yeah. That's true. I have some Orthodox friends, here, in Argentina and they celebrates Christmas the same day than us, Catholics...So..why some websites saids that they celebrates it January 7? I read it too and I do not know WHY the keep telling a thing that it isn't true.

Orthodox Churches (including the Russian) on the Old Calendar celebrate Christmas on December 25 according to the Julian Calendar. However that is January 7 on the calendar the Western world uses.

Her birthday is on the 16th, since the calender moved up a day in 1900.

So... if it was 15th in 19th C and 16th in 20th C, does that mean it's meant to be 17th now in 21st C?
Title: Re: Anniversary of Olga's birthday -- post tributes & memorial messages here!
Post by: Rodney_G. on July 17, 2008, 06:37:49 PM
No, I don't think so.  Olga's birthdate of November 15th, 1895 is actually her birthdate according to the Western , that is, Gregorian calendar  of the time. The date on the calendar at her birth in Tsarskoe Selo would have been November 3rd, 1895. This would have been according to the then and there prevailing Julian calendar. The differential between the two calendars became thirteeen days at the start of the 20th century, hence November 3/16. This differential was in effect frozen in place when the Bolsheviks by decree adopted the Western calendar in February, 1918.
Title: Re: Anniversary of Olga's birthday -- post tributes & memorial messages here!
Post by: Sarushka on July 17, 2008, 08:03:52 PM
The difference between the Julian (old style/eastern) and Gregorian (new style/western) calendars won't increase to 14 days until 16 February 2100.
Title: Re: Anniversary of Olga's birthday -- post tributes & memorial messages here!
Post by: Sarastasia on July 18, 2008, 05:15:22 AM
So for all of 20th C and now, it is actually 16th Nov??
Title: Re: Anniversary of Olga's birthday -- post tributes & memorial messages here!
Post by: Sarushka on July 18, 2008, 06:50:29 AM
Correct. According to the Western calendar, Olga's birthday should be observed on 16 November.

You're right on time! In the 19th century when Olga was born, her birthday was on 3/15 November, but after 1900 the difference between the two calendars grew to 13 days, so it became 3/16 November.

Sarushka> I have always thought that after 1900, Olga's birthday became on 15th of November...and that it haven't been changed ...

Nope. The two calendars have been slowly growing apart over the centuries. In 2100, Olga's birthday will shift to 3/17 November.

Here's a dual calendar for 1895: http://5ko.free.fr/en/jul.php?y=1895 (http://5ko.free.fr/en/jul.php?y=1895). Old Style dates are on the top row of each month, and corresponding New Style on the bottom. Here's 1900 (http://5ko.free.fr/en/jul.php?y=1900), the first year of the change, and this year's calendar (http://5ko.free.fr/en/jul.php?y=2008) as well.

And here's a chart I lifted from Wikipedia that shows the number of days between the calendars throughout the centuries:

I think Russia changed calendar in 1918/9 - from Julian to Gregorian..? Or only the Church use Julian? Correct me if I am wrong.

Even when I was too young to understand your story, the  pictures of your face,  with your merry eyes and sweet smile caught my eye and my heart. Olishka! You haven't let go of them since! There is a special place that is yours , always.

She is so fragile and gentle as she bends with particular love and care over every soldier's shirt that she sews. Her musical voice, her graceful movements, her lovely, thin little figure -- it is the essense of femininity and friendliness. She is so bright and joyful. I remember the words of one of her teachers: Olga Nikolaevna has a crystal soul." -

Happy birthday 115th birthday Olga, you will always be an example of true female beauty. Her charming ways and her crystal soul will always remind me of the good and modest princess from fairytales.
One of my favorites quote being said about her:
“The more you look at it, the comely and charming is her face. It is illuminated by an inner light, it becomes beautiful from every bright smile on her manners to laugh, throwing back his head slightly back, so that could see the whole smooth, pearly white teeth number... . Her melodious voice, her graceful movements, all her lovely slim figure - the embodiment of femininity and friendliness. It is all clear and joyful. Involuntarily recall the words spoken to me one of her teachers: "Olga Nikolaevna crystal soul". “
Happy birthday again for my favourite GD<3.

Olga was born in the 19th century, when the difference between the Russian and Western calendars was only 12 days. In the 20th century, the difference lengthened to 13 days. That's why you'll sometimes see two different sets of dates.

From 1895 through February of 1900, her birthday was celebrated on 15 November according to the New Style calendar. After March of 1900, the correct date to observe the anniversary of Olga's birth in the west became 16 November.

To dear, lovely Olga: Happy Birthday!  I hope you and your family are having a lovely time up there. You did not deserve to die so young.

To Olga Nicholaevna:
You were so young,
Just hardly grown,
And yet and twenty-two you'd flown.
No time for a kiss, or lingering in his arms,
For those you loved were too low for your charms.
But time to weep, and know your fate,
You deserved a better end than this.
--A poem I wrote for Olga.
Rest in peace, dear grand duchess.

You seem to have your Olga's mixed up.  This thread is for Olga Nicholaievna, the daughter of Nicholas II.  The Olga you're referring to is his younger sister.

Opps! This sort of mix up is exactly why Marie called her eldest sister, "our Olga".

4 January 1916
My Golden Papa!

.....In the evening , the day before yesterday, we laughed and laughed. Old aunt Olga rang our Olga, that one of the soldiers from her combined regiment had asked her to come and visit her wounded from that regiment. So then, Olga goes to ring the duty room where Kulyukin was on duty, and a duty guard answers and asks, "Who is on the phone?" She answers, "Olga Nikolaevna." "Which Olga Nikolaevna?" "You don't know Olga Nikolaevna? The one who lives above you?" "No idea what you are on about." "Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna - have you got it?!" and then she began laughing nervously when he got all offended and said, "Madame, this is an official telephone line and prank calls are not allowed!" and hung up. Olga stormed out. Within five minutes in comes Tatiana, she rings, the guard knows her, and she explained everything. Yesterday Kulyukin came to the Liturgy and asked Olga's forgiveness of Resin, as he didn't expect her to ring and thought someone was having a joke.....

Of course "The Governess"  knew the guard!

 Sarushka,

[Olga was born in the 19th century, when the difference between the Russian and Western calendars was only 12 days.

[/quote]
What happened in March, 1900? If you have in mind the addition of the extra day's difference between the two calendars (which I think you do) why would it not have occurred on New year's Day , i.e. January, 1900? I must say I 'd never heard of a February/ March changeover date.

I have no idea. I was surprised myself when I looked it up -- like you, I'd always assumed the change occurred on 1 January, but apparently it happens on February 28 or 29. Perhaps something to do with leap year?

Here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregorian_calendar#Difference_between_Gregorian_and_Julian_calendar_dates)'s an explanation accompanying the conversion charts on Wikipedia, but to be perfectly honest I don't really understand it.

My reaction to the Wikipedia conversion article was similar to yours. I thought I was following it pretty well, but at the end I only had a vague overall grasp of what had happened. I think the issue was indeed the leap day factor, as manifested in the 400 year cycle. Still, I'm glad that as a twenty-first century person I can be content with the "add a day per century" formula in thinking back to those years. I still wonder if the average person, or even sophisticated ones, living then experienced confusion when forced to deal with people and places on a different calendar. I have this image of mail sent from "Ggegorianland" to "Julianland" arriving, on the calendar, before it was mailed !

For Olga...

Me, and my Olga

You see us playing together as children
As she teaches me the ropes of life
That come to her so naturally, but in her elegance
In her regency, she takes it in her strife
The kindness, the devoutness, the selflessness
That are so often mistaken as my own
Were taught to me by none other than her
Us two growing up in the grandeur of the throne
Me, and my Olga

You see me now and think nothing of it
but it was her who gave me these elegant robes
That sway and dance at my feet
And her who showed me how to look and pose
In all those photos of just me and her
It was her that gave me kindness
Expecting nothing in return
Retaining our regal blindness:
Me, and my Olga

Is it us you now speak of?
The daughters of the last Tsar
Who lived and few in a fairy tale,
In palaces of splendour near and far
Do you remember her in all her glory
In all that wisdom she imparted on me
In all that strength and belief she held
And gave to me and others so unconditionally
Me, and my Olga

Yet it is us down here in this cellar
Where fairy tales no longer have a place
It is us clutching at one another
As bullets and bayonets beset our face
And it is us sprayed with each other’s blood
Praying for the end with a scream and a tear
Grand Duchesses and sisters born but to die:
Anastasia, Maria,
Me, and my Olga

~ Sara James

It's a gloomy fall day where I am here in the Northeast USA, but 118 years ago today, considering it Old Style (which is how I remember it) in Peterhof in Russia it was a day of joy because of the birth of Olga Nikolaevna, Olga. For her father Nicholas, it was "A day I will remember for ever...with a prayer we named the daughter sent to us by God Olga."

Warm birthday remembrances today for dear Olga.

Today I recall that  120 years ago, though hoping for a son, Nicholas was so overjoyed by the birth of Olga. As he should have been.
I'm also thinking of many of the Olga anecdotes  appearing in Margaret Eagar's  "Six Years at the Russian Court" from when Olga was a little girl. They often involved Olga being willful, and impetuous,  or even naughty, and yet somehow being innocent, sensitive  and open  at the same time.

One classic occurred after a carriage ride  during which Miss Eagar had to get Olga to sit quietly after the latter had been misbehaving. Olga  soon noted a policeman  writing something down . Though Miss  Eagar assured Olga that she was neither old enough, nor 'naughty' enough to be stopped by a policeman, young Olga remained behaved. But then, back at the Alexander Palace, she went around asking, in effect, "has a policeman been around here asking for an Olga?"  !!!

Further, after telling her parents her story, she asked Nicholas if he had ever been a prisoner. When her father told her he had never been naughty enough to go to prison, Olga exclaimed,"Oh! How very good you must have been too!"  I love that reaction of Olga.

Good thoughts today about precious and caring Olga.
