That one is new for me. There are two from same day with Heir in sailor suit, one looking towards camera, one him looking down. Also there is one taken at same place with Ana T. Vyrubova, labeled as '1916' ( which I doubt ). I think room is supposed to be Imperial bedroom, I am not sure, though.

same day also... You are right about the location Nena. Accordin gto the tapestry it is definitely the Imperial bedroom in Alexander Palace.

I am relatively new to the forum (joined back in mid-May) though I have known about this for quite a while now and haven't gotten to actually participate yet because of a busy end-of-year schedule, but I thought I would pitch in if I may.  So greetings everyone!

I would have to agree with Sarushka that, judging from the looks of the wonderful picture (which I had not seen before) that Irina Alexandrovna posted, Anastasia would have to be about 13, maybe 14, in that picture.

Also, those are wonderful pictures that Grand Duchess Ally and Grand Princess Shandroise contributed back in late June.  Over the years, after seeing so many pictures of the Romanovs, all charming of course, it is always wonderful to see ones you weren't familiar with.  It just so happens that I had not seen those two before.  They are really beautiful and it is wonderful to see Alexandra and Anastasia spending some quality mother-daughter time together!  They are both so sweet in each picture.

Best,

Stana

Title: Re: Anastasia Pictures V

Not a drawing. A retouched picture. Some pictures wouldn't turn to be very clear these years before WWI, and sometimes, they were retouched in a way they seems even drawings. Most of the photos published in papers and reviews of that era, could be heavily retouched and the result was that they seems more drawings than pictures.

Yes. And I love how much Nicholas interacted with his children, playing with them, teasing them, etc. He was not like other royals who would see their children just time to time.

Your quote reminds me of the opening of 20th century myths and legends (now revelled/solved) tv series, they had some creepy piano/tublar bells music and there is various pictures and flims.  Including the procession with OTMA walking past the camera while they had their arms linking through those dukes or whom ever.

It slows right down and Anastasia turns her head and looks into the camera.  It was spooky.

The second picture is from one of Anna Vyrubova’s albums (it’s not included in the Beinecke’s collection, unfortunately), and it’s labeled by Anna as “Livadia, 1910” [although in my opinion it seems to have been taken in 1914].

since I wish I could be amazed by a pic as I used to be the first year I visited here for the first time...

The picture in question is in the giant  "Nicholas & Alexandra" exhibition book. It's on page #360, top left corner pic in the album. It states that the photo album belonged to Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna with amateur photos of the family taken during the spring-summer 1917.

I agree with blessotma about the pic being taken outside the palace. I'm thinking the circular ramp behind the semi-circular hall. The big pair had their pic taken near the ramp with the railing wearing their regimental uniform.

My sincere apologies - I misplaced that photo with the one of Aleksei that was taken on the bridge at Children's Island at that period. It must have been complex of Tsarskoe's gardens outside as it have pointed out by Condecontessa and blessOTMA. This all forces me to take the map of Tsarskoe and AP and to inspect it deeper.

There are photos of the big pair on flower beds where it looks like they are floating and they are giggling like  they know it too. They were experienced  photoghers in their way...simply by the sheer number of photos they took!

Re Posts # 119 and 120:  IMO, I would agree. Someone has indeed "worked-over" an existing photograph, or part thereof. The tinkering/retouching is most noticeable in the harsh contrast/definition of the outlines of the hair-bow and the necklace. Entirely "original" art (painting/pastel,etc.) would have left a "softer" profile of those two items.  As noted, the particular illustration copy shown (Post # 117) is from courtesy of the Prussian Picture Archives.    AP.
Title: Re: Anastasia Pictures V

I thought it was a portrait based on a formal picture.

Re Response #122:  IMO, a competently trained portrait artist would not have left such glaring discrepancies.  It almost reminds one of a "cut-out (background removed)," as demonstrated by the profile/contrast of the hair ribbon. The detail of the facial features, to me. are completely redolent of a photographic image, with bow. pearls, and detail of work on the dress all "gussied-up" with highlights  in an inept fashion.   AP.
Title: Re: Anastasia Pictures V
Post by: Holly on December 29, 2010, 01:09:34 PM
I thought it was a portrait based on a formal picture.

As did I. I've seen the same portrait labeled as art myself.
I'm not sure how it could be a simple retouching as the number of pearls around her neck is odd and the lace front piece was not so circular in real life.
Title: Re: Anastasia Pictures V
Post by: aleksandr pavlovich on December 29, 2010, 01:35:11 PM
IMO, the "number" of (birthday ?) pearls has nothing to do with the purity of the illustration's supposed original state, rather in this illustration posted here, it's the DEFINITION/depiction of the pearls and bow especially in a black-outlined fashion that would not be present on a competent, unaltered portrait oil/pastel rendering. Thus in summation, I feel that it was/is originally a photo that has been altered in an inept fashion. The clarity of depiction of the facial features/contrast undoubtedly indicate original photographic origin.   Regards,  AP.

But the dress looks noticeably different than in the 1913 photos from which it was obviously taken. And, the overall "glossiness" of her face, which would take far more than the elementary "photoshop" skills of Edwardian times, points towards it either being a piece of art, --or-- a modern re-touch job.
Title: Re: Anastasia Pictures V
Post by: aleksandr pavlovich on December 29, 2010, 04:17:24 PM
"Edwardian" (although amazing things were done then, example being photos of Queen Alexandra's face, and I  DO understand that the King died in 1910, as regards the era style) or relatively "modern,"  my impression remains: photo retouch/manipulation, which could be construed as a "type" of art by its practioners, I suppose.  Regards,  AP.

Re illustration in Post 121:   IMO, this miniature contains a glaring error.  I don't know the origin of THIS particular illustration (it MAY come from some amateur colorist/"artist"), but the ribband shown has the PRINCIPAL color of the St. Andrew (blue), which grandduchesses were NOT awarded.  I rather gather that it is meant to depict the Order of St. Catherine, to which grandduchesses WERE entitled. The correct ribband was scarlet with the silver edges.  (The Saint Andrew has NO edging. ) Another reason to not trust implicitly in such efforts. It appears to have been obviously cropped/copied from one of the well-known formal photographs. The surrounding frame is interesting.    Regards,  AP.

AP, that is exactly why I research and ask the knowledgeable what is correct...because here we see a nice portrait that  is not as good as it could have been because of a mistake. It is unfortunate because red would actually look better imo. I think the artist might have been fooled by the black and white photo. Red can" read " lighter in b/w than one would think  and it may have looked blue to them .

Holly, is that movie still  you posted from the film  where they get out of a car? I saw it once on a You tube  video that looks like this . I think Prince Igor is with them. Olga flashes someone with a big smile .About the Imp @Sevastopol 1916 photo:  I scanned that from the private world book. I figure out away to get around the printed dot problem when scanning from books  and so can get them pretty big. As you most likely know, this photo is printed quite small in the book itself .  Photos from that time are among my favourites  as well for all the children...we at least get a glimpse of what would have been.

VOF, it seems to me the other girls Faberge portraits are form this photo session as well...what's exciting to me is seeing  the colour of their hair and eyes...while the Faberge artist used photos, I have to believe the girl's eye and hair colour was made known to him....perhaps by direct observation or by consulting with some one who knew them....but Faberge portraits are our best record of these things ...however I believe in this case  the artist removed a  bit of AN's impishness in his portrait...in the photo, she looks more mischievous! lol!

Holly, I think prints  were sold back in the day...increasingly I'm seeing Anna's albums ( and every one's  )  as collections of not just photos they personally  took , but also of copy prints  from other places as well . I think one could order copies of photos from the court photographers...and this looks like what was available on eBay recently.  Anna could have taken those photos...or just as likely  bought them or had them gifted to her... It makes sense there would be  prints made available for others....and it makes sense the prints, made in those days would go for so much on eBay...they are historic items . The print that just sold could have been made the same time as Anna's photo in Yale

Ah, yes, that's right. I just can't see paying that much for just a copy made in the same time period. It may be old, but if I'm going to pay a fortune for it, it would have glue hand painted by Anastasia on it.

Re Reply # 143/ "blessOTMA"  Yes, "blessOtma," your comments are logical.  It is a very simple and naive "trap" into which many collectors fall.  I was once the victim of my own rush to acquire a similiar item:  four "original" photos of the Spanish King Alfonso XIII, visiting the Vatican.  While they WERE IMO (upon receipt of a winning bid) definitely authentic in subject matter, definitely of-the-period in chemical development, paper, etc., BUT.................were they "UNIQUE" as in being the ONLY ones in existence?  ABSOLUTELY NOT! They had come from a period newspaper/reporter collection, wherein a few DUPLICATES were always kept.  I later verified this with the seller, who answered honestly.  Thank God, I DID NOT pay an exceptional price, but I quickly learned the lesson of  "Need, Speed, Greed."
Among my Russian Imperial Era collections, over the years I have looked at, studied, and purchased a number of photos.  Of these, I have perhaps a half-dozen of IMO authentic, of the period photos of the Emperor Nicholas (on community visits, etc.), members of his suite, the Heir posing candidly alone (outside and NOT during the war-years), etc., that IMPORTANTLY, I have NEVER EVER seen published.  Some have their mounted adhesive album page backings and are from Russia, for instance St. Petersburg, etc. They are the somewhat smaller-than-expected photos (not like our modern 4"x 6" glossies, or "cabinet" photos.  Do I consider them "unique," "one-of a kind," etc.?  NOT ON YOUR LIFE!  Who knows, how many thousands of duplicates remain unshown/undiscovered/ unpublished in the GARF files, personal /family files, etc. I potentially would allow (modern/marked) copies to be made for reputable reasons, research, but NOT for wide-open distribution. I sincerely doubt that even with the most pristine, chain-of-custody collections, Yale or otherwise, that you will find VERY, VERY, FEW "only-one-of-its-kind" photos.  Copies were naturally made from the original negatives for family members, allied military personnel, other royal houses, publicity, etc. Yet they were all of the same period and are authentic.  However, by definition, there can only be ONE original print, the rest are DUPLICATES.   As for my collection, eventually, it will be up to my son to decide what he would wish to do at the "appropriate" time.  He is exceptionally fluent in Russian, reasonably knowledge in my collection, etc., so it would not be a "give-away." I simply treat them as "oddities."
Now as to value......REALLY what is ANYTHING worth?  The answer is "Just as much as another person would wish to pay."  Value is relative; what would be expensive to one person, would not be to another.  Auctions contribute to rapidly escalating prices, due to the EMOTIONAL concepts of, again, "Need, Speed, Greed."  But there is (without a "reserve price"), also a "down" side.  You can find your "treasures" going for much less that you paid  for them originally.  I have experienced this, too.  Today's economy is a large factor for the "middle-of-the -road" bidder, though for the "unique " things there will always be a market.
Lesson to be learned:  you can NEVER do enough research in theory for an item, but you CAN slow down and balance your desires against realities.  There are A LOT of "sharks" in the waters of collecting.   Regards,  AP.

Exactly. It's fascinating to realize just because a photo  is in someone album...it doesn't mean they took the photo. All this time I thought Anna was an excellent photographer of  the various  palaces and landscapes ...but she most likely bought those photos from the professionals engaged by the family...and who wouldn't add to their collection by choosing among other photos of the family and events?  The photos Holly and I were discussing from a recent eBay auction appear in Anna albums at Yale and the album the family had published in 1916 to help with war funding...so indeed those would have many contemporary copies....and as you say an item is worth what someone will pay...and in the case of an auction, what two people will pay!

The photographs taken on this day in Peterhof of the girls has a haunting quality to it, I suppose do to the low lighting.

I love those too... That 2nd one is new to me! Thanks! I think the lens was too wide open for the lighting  and so one gets this super high contrast images.

Re Posting # 167:  A striking and revealing photo as always, showing the genetic input in the Emperor from the Dowager Empress Marie, height-wise.  The Emperor keenly felt this and once remarked (paraphrasing, but perhaps direct, as I remember), about his military "taking orders from a dwarf."  The Romanov men who held the genetic traits of the Emperor Alexander III's side of the family, were known for their height, though I rather suspect that the Grand Duke Nicholas N. (Jr.) was an exception even to them.    AP.

Indeed AP, Grand Duke Nicholas N.  could dwarf a horse much less a man! What is interesting is we bring  a camera to eye level in order to aim it...but back then, one looked down to the top of the camera and so its lens  was  at waist level. This  would make Grand Duke Nicholas N. seem even bigger in relation to the Tsar.  I believe that is Uncle Ernie speaking to AN , but someone more knowledgeable will know

True!  There is also another famous (comparison) photo of the two: one where they are standing clad in military greatcoats, facing/semi-facing the camera and the length of the Grand Duke's coat is utterly remarkable.  I remember a quote from a mourner/visitor, who viewed the body of the Grand Duke in death in exile in France. He remarked, " His hands were so "BIG!"  Regards,  AP.

That photo was occasionally retouched to make the height difference less striking. If I can find both versions, I'll post them.

I can almsost assure she is.

It was signed as Irina and in my opinion it just a bit like Olga N. but more like Irina.

In some of the pictures, Irina looks like Olga and sometimes like Tatiana, but here I could be wrong but I think it’s Irina, the girl in the picture has similar eyes like Irina. There is a photo from the same day that include Olga, I will post later when I upload it to my photobucket.

The first picture does not contain Irina. It's Olga A., Anastasia, and Olga N. These photographs were taken in the Crimea in 1913 during an archaeological dig at Khersones.

Olga N. looks like herself, so I can't understand mistaking her but if anything, her head is tilted which could confuse you.

Holly,  I had a feeling you'd say that.  =). You are welcome .  I find it interesting....AN looks like she will just be shaking their hands...I wonder if that's how the hand kissing gesture started , or  she was indeed just shaking hands...hard to see how that would be.  It's a great photo.

You're onto me, blessOTMA!

I've seen a few films of the children going through this practice and it does look as if they're about to shake hands. The hand is offered in a similar fashion and both raise their arms for the men to kiss them. If I remember correctly, this photograph was also taken at the same time as a film of them.

I scanned and cropped this photograph. It's one of my favorites of Anastasia. I love her expression.

I was thinking about it like you... and it's so interesting to see how Olga was conscious of being the first - born, without be too preposterous, but just being conscious... don't know i i managed to explain myself  ;)

You have said it quite well. The birth order, when it came to the girls, was usual followed and certainly would be in a case like  this where they were  line to get their hands kissed. It would be expected.  I was just reading about this in "The last days at Tsarskoe Selo by Count Benckenddorff : One day in early captivity ,two officers kissed the hand of one of the girls . The guards complained it was counter revolutionary , the officers were transferred and "From that day onwards the Empress and the Grand Duchess never gave their hand to the officers" ....so that is how the practice died out. I'm sure it was done without thinking....it was so natural to them.

It's a type of daffodil I believe. That little art nouveau vase appears  though out  the 1914 formals whenever  the table is in the photo.
Marie has her hands around it in one and in the famous photo of the four girls, ( where TN is looking down) it's in front of Marie

Thanks VOF for the savable version, I very well appreciate it ! :)

So it's a daffodil in an art noveau vase. I do recall Maria holding it in one of her formal pics. The flowers could very well came from the Tsarskoe greenhouse. And the vase's color must have been mauve.

There is another shot where Olga 's planting a tree and you can see Maria and Tatiana behind. Is there a record of AN going to Riga at that particular time? She might have been too young to attend the ceremony. Or she was needed to be with the heir as they were close with each other.

Grand Duke Boris Vladimirovich was a notorious playboy, to the point where he'd probably be considered a "sex addict" today. His mother, Maria Pavlovna (Miechen) wanted him to marry Olga. Alix was horrified and refused to even consider it for her. He'd much rather be paired with someone he had a chance with, and poor Maria was probably grossing out, provided she even knew what he was like ...

So the Grand Duke Michael was part of the Tercentenary. I read somewhere that he was banished from Russia until WWI.
Yes, of course he was. However, he was out from the homeland in 1910 and 1912, during affair with madame Brassova.
Not exactly. Michael was abroad since September 1912 to August 1914, when he came back to Russia with his wife and children, just before the outbreak of war.
He spent the entire two years abroad so he could not participate in the procession in 1913, it was just impossible.

So the procession in the picture posted by larri-otmaprivatealbums was in my opinion not in 1913 but  in 1912, not during the Tercentenary but during Centenary celebrations in Moscow - of the victory over Napoleon in the War of 1812.

Anastasia in 1913 during the Tercentenary:

What is amazing is to realize that from 1912 on, the family was ever more busy with extra royal duties... 1912 Centenary celebrations , then the 1913   Tercentenary celebrations , then the war years....by the time of the revolution they had done nearly 5 years of extra duties in an already busy schedule. Remarkable

I can't see the nurse well, but she really looks like Auntie Olga. Is she indeed? If so, we can date the photo 1916 - i'm quite sure i read in 25 chapters of my life that Olga A saw her nieces during war only in summer 1916
If she's not Olga A... well, i'm daydreaming, and i'm sorry ^^

Sunny, OA  must of meant the last time she saw the girls  because there are photos of her with them as they are breaking ice at AP...clearly not summer and she's in her nurse uniform . That last time must of been in the group of photos with Aunt Sunshine, Aunt X and Minnie. AN looked like she does in this photo( even a similar outfit) ....so I believe 1916 is correct for this photo. But she's with  a nurse from the Little Pair's  hospital at AP

Well, her favorite perfume was violets, (Coty) so I suppose that would be her favorite flower. As for colour, umm, blue or green? That is just a guess, however.

We do not know for sure, but in another thread (i do not recall the exact name) we guessed it could be red/pink because she often colored her clothes &hats in photos in red or pink.
KLook for the thread about colors: it's very interesting.

Letter from Tatiana Nikolaevna to Zinadia Tolstoy
June 23, 1917
Dearest ZS,
I am terribly ashamed that I still have not thanked you for your letter on the 29th of May and the lovely embroidered bags. I took the blueish one with multicoloured flowers, Olga- blue with yellow roses, Anastasia- pink, and Maria- all yellow. They are very useful and those always remind us of you.

(my addition)
Whenever Anastasia hand tinted photographs, she seemed to put herself in a red or pink colour, Maria was Green, and Olga was blue. Since maria's outfit was an extremely light colour, I'm guessing it was whatever her favorite colour was. I've always assumed purple or violet was Tatiana's favorite colour, just like her mother, but maybe a bit different.

I love that letter...of course TN made a list of who took what! lol!  I have heard they some times  favored their regiment's colours as well . Sunny, that's an interesting observation about AN's albums. I would be so great to know if she colored what the outfit were or just colours she  liked! I'm thinking it was a reflection of what  they wore...but can't know.

I've always thought Maria's is some shade of yellow. In hand tinted photos her clothes are sometimes greenish and sometimes yellowish, so since she chose the yellow bag, i've given her yellow, but this is IMHO. Moreover, Tatiana's clothes in hand tinted pictures have various colors (light blu, blu, green) and i gave her pale green. Well, this is IMHO, just because i wanted to use a different color for everyone of them in my chapter schedules for my novel! So i chose: O light blue, T pale green, M yellow and A pink (not red because it's difficult to write on a red background using Open Office, LOL).

Of course! *Slap forehead* Sorry, dumb moment there! I was thinking that because she was the tomboy of the sisters she would prefer more outdoorsy colours. That was so stereotypical of me that my RE teacher would be in tears! I remember the letter now.

Lucky for us Tatiana was so detail oriented!
Indeed. Her list making is an interesting illustration of how she thought....and as Gibbs said , while she had decided opinions,  it was hard to know her thoughts .... an  interesting distinction.  TN approached things differently. What amazes me about OTMA was how diffrent they were from each other ( as many attest to)...and how their diffrent talents and  abilities were needed by the family as a whole . I really don't think the family would have wreathed captivity as well as they did without the  diffrent talents and strengths all the girls brought to the situation....along with the family devotion felt by all of course.

But exactitude was important to TN ....probably why she excelled at nursing. I was just reading a story about her as a 2 year old in" Six years at the Russian Court." M. Eager was dressing the girls to receive Maria Pavlovna  the younger and her brother Dimity. OT had gone to their house the week before. As Eager got her ready, TN kept saying " Hurry! I MUST be at the top of the staris when they arrive!!"  It seems she was greeted by them in this way and she felt it must be the RIGHT way and she was most anxious to do it 'right"...so we  see she was born with this trait.

What is interesting about letters is we often write to the other person  what we ourselves would want to know. Of course TN would want to know who picked which bag  lol!

I'd say early July - in 1914 when president Poincaré visited his ally Nicholas before the war broke out, the IF was on the Standart and there received the President (i'm referring to Ambassador Paleologue's book; also Sarushka in her novel writes about it in the very first chapters). WWI was declared, if i remember well, about 28th July NS or so. I remember Nicholas' declaration to germany was on 1st August NS, so on 19th July for Julian Calendar.
Moreover, i remember they had a party for Maria Fedorovna's name day on the Standart, look here:
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/440/1912ballostandart2.jpg/ (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/440/1912ballostandart2.jpg/)
Maria's ND in Orthodox Calendar is 22 July (4th august NS). So a bit later than June, i'd say...

oops that's not the Standart...one knows because of the railings. They are open and the Standart's railing is closed( to keep the little ones from falling over board!)...Maria Fedorovna took over the Polar Star after NII and family had moved on to the Standart and the Polar Star is  where the famous dancing footage and this photo was  taken  on Maria Fedorovna's name day . I once asked Douglas  AP member and royal yacht expert , why was the dancing on the Polar Star?  Was it bigger? His answer was Maria Fedorovna  liked dancing and wanted to encourage the girls to dance more

The Imperial family begin her trip to Finland at the end of June 1912 (aproximately 20 June, if I am not wrong). They went back home to Peterhof the 6 August 1912. So the picture was probably taken in July, like a lot of similar picture of this year from the Beinecke Library.

I know that she suffered from hallux valgus, would this have caused it? Nope, it's just an illusion created by stockings and the embellishment on the shoe itself.

There's a photo of Anastasia on the beach at Livadia that shows her bunion quite clearly. Also, in some tennis court photos she's the only one wearing sandals instead of tennis shoes -- likely because of the bunion.

I'd never even thought of that explanation for Anastasia's sandals at the tennis court, nor had I even noticed that she was the only one in them. It makes sense, though.

Yeah I agree, and I love this photo! The minor drawback is that Tatiana looks a little out of focus, or perhaps she was moving around a little too much and sunsequently caused some of that smear effect we often see with older photographs taken by cameras with longer exposure times.

But it's more than made up for by how beautiful and happy the all look. Rare to see all four with side big smiles on their face all at once in a posed photograph! If it was in fact taken shortly after Alexei's birth those smiles make even more sense...as it was surely a very happy time for the family!

Yeah I second that having recently stumbled across this photo as well. They're just magic together!

With do respect to TMA though I think you can crop in just on Olga and the baby and it would make for a wonderful picture. I love how she looks and the expression on her face gazing at little Alexei. Like a doting yet mature and reassuring smile that you'd expect to see from a mother (or at least an older than 9-ish year old girl). As if she's thinking something along the lines of, "I got this handled...leave the baby boy caretaker stuff to me!" lol.

I don't know, maybe I'm reading a little bit too much into it...but Olga shines bright here! Not that she doesn't normally of course :-)

Good call! It's hard to see Tatiana but I agree Anastasia doesn't at all look any younger than Marie...much less a full two years younger. I think that speaks more to Mashka's look at the time. Round little princess face still full of baby fat that makes her come off looking as young as her little sister.

I agree it's kind of a fluke enhanced by their positioning and it wouldn't be long before Maria grew into that flawless Russian beauty...

Also am I the only one who sees a bit of Anna Anderson in this obstructed shot of Anastasia? Not fanning any impostor flames, just saying...

I strongly believe Anastasia's portrait by von Kaulbach is this:

a small miniature base off the actually portrait

as you can see on the Faberge like flower with miniatures of the Imperial children 1904/5,
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v477/MMPC/romanovbabies.jpg)

the elder girls portraits can be clearly see here and match

good detective work! I have this enlargement from Alix's drawing room at AP that shows a similar portait, though Imp seems to be smiling more here . von Kaulbach had a tremendous  ability to capture thier personalities and it's touching Alix took these portaits with her when she left AP

I'm not convinced that Tatiana is the one portrayed wearing the sailor cap, it is more to the likeness of Olga. However, the feathery hat that is supposedly Tatiana doesn't resemble her much either. But of course, it wouldn't make sense to not have a portrait of Tatiana when all the girls have one made. It would be nice to have the original picture taken of the girls to compare with the portraits.

I agree with the person who made the guide for us. The one with the flowery hat has too round a face to be Tatiana. However, I believe this is getting slightly off topic: http://forum.alexanderpalace.org/index.php?topic=16783.0 I made this topic shorty after joining, perhaps it should be continued there.

I'd never seen this one before:

Yes, you can see a few more pictures of this woman on pages 25 and 26 of Album 3.

I found this on a Romanov photo tumblr. Could this help?
I think the author of this had a very sharp sight (unlike me, since my eye specialist had to change my lenses with stronger ones, ugh)

I thought she looked familiar -- I think it's Anna's sister. If I remember right her name is Alexandra.

EmmyLee , I'm not surprised you would know the exact pages! =). I believe it is Anya's sister, and she well could be the mother of Anya's nieces that were named for the Big Pair . Here is Olga with her name sake . http://brblimages.library.yale.edu/ROMANOVIMG/size4/D0105/1000194.jpg Anya can confuse one by having her own relatives in her photo albums lol!

Yes, you are correct. Her name was Aleksandra Taneeva (Pistolkros). She was present in Rasputin's group photo with women around him. (Taken in March 1914).

тяв-тяв,

Hi all - trying to put together a folder of pics of Anastasia "doing stuff".  I've been through the photothreads index and haven't found a few of the ones I'm looking for --- Anastasia photographing herself in the mirror, Anastasia and Maria hiding in a cupboard, and Anastasia "levitating".  Can someone please post high res versions of these?

The photo is in "Nicholas And Alexandra: The Family Albums" by Prince Michael Of Greece (as are the others on my wish list).  I may have gotten the pic confused with the story of how Anastasia liked to hide in cupboards...

тяв-тяв,

Anastasia mentions in a letter to her father about her taking the pic...

1914 28 October
"...I took this picture of myself looking at the mirror. It was very hard as my hands were trembling..."

Thank you for the pic.  It's stuff like this, her flicking her fingers at the camera as she walks away, stabbing the ground with her parasol, barrelling along like a juggernaut on roller skates, etc., etc,  that keeps her grounded and "real"

BlessOTMA (or Anne, if I may?) wonderful finds! I simply have to colour them! And Vanya,I utterly agree. Anastasia of all the girls resembled Alix from her childhood to early teens. I think it is a huge shame that we never saw if she turned out to be the great beauty Alix was. The cruel twists of fate...

It's interesting Vanya Ivanova , you speak of the difference between them  being mischievous glint in Imp's eyes, because just today I ran into
the testimony of one of the washer women who came to Ipative House on July 15th to wash the floors. She said all the children had the look of thier mother, but unlike her, they had laughter and smiles. I agree. In my three years of painting the family, I have really come to appreciate how much the children took after Alix...even in thier smiles =)

Ortipo ! Thank you for posting that! I've never seen the paintings so clear!

Wow! BlessOTMA, those comparison pictures between Anastasia and her mother are incredible, startling even. Thank you for posting them. Anastasia certainly was the image of   Alix's "family of original" as the saying goes....that is, she took after Alix and her siblings . The Imp would fit right in in those photos of Alix's parents and all their  children!

And she was at Ipative so much longer , I would think that would play a role... it was more her "home truff" However you are right...she had a forcefulness not often seen, but when it came forward, Wow. During the first days of the Feb  revolution one of Alix's ladies in waiting ( Isa? Li? ) noticed  a force awaking in Marie. She would have proved even more remarkable had she been allowed her natural life imo

Haha, I never noticed that as being part of this photo, only as an Anastasia standalone. Did she hold that pose for another picture taken just of her, or was it always a cropped image and part of this larger photo?

Silly Imp! Although I think we have all pressed our faces up to the racket before like we were inside a cage or so those silly lines would imprint on our nose, cheeks, and forehead. And would hasn't imitated guitar playing on a tennis racket? :-)

Just goes to show that cultures, conditions and technology change but kids will be kids! Very cute and comforting to me.

Anyone seen this one of Anastasia and Tatiana(in which the case I think this may be Tatiana, correct me if I'm wrong)?
http://tatiananikolaevnaromanova.tumblr.com/image/37092020727 (http://tatiananikolaevnaromanova.tumblr.com/image/37092020727)

Olga and Tatiana is correct. Olga's hair is down and held back with a large bow, a style she favored around 1910. Anastasia would have been only 9 years old then -- still in short skirts. Tatiana's skirt is clearly well below the knee.

Tatiana Z  posted a bunch of new to me photos on the rare photo thread of the family in 1913-1914...and then  Laura
put them on this easier site.  Totally fab, run don't walk over there in the Having Fun section

But this one I had to put here to point out that  it seems to me Alix is asking Imp how did she get a stain on her out fit already?
Imp is trying to think of something and everyone else is laughing...or trying not to. Amazing

It's amazing how much we learn about this family from pictures alone. Sure we know tons about them from letters and diaries and first hand accounts but a photograph like this provides a perfect account of the family dynamic without saying a word. The Empress asking her darling Imp to explain herself while her two eldest sisters listen in with curiosity. Sweet Marie just stares ahead, gazing and smiling at the camera, for she has seen this act played out before. So too has the Tsar who is content to light his cigarette and pay it little mind.

Breathtaking photo. One of the best I've ever seen! Thanks again to Tatiana Z for revealing it to us!

I'm not sure the way it's told on this website is quite true however. From my understanding the hike that took place involved only Anastasia, not her siblings.

She was convinced that she could keep up with the men and her father and wanted to prove herself. Nicholas reluctantly agreed to let her join in but made no concessions. After a while she began to get tired and fall behind, then started to cry. Knowing they couldn't simply leave her behind the other officers took turns carrying her. By the end of the hike the men were sweating heavily and extremely exhausted...even more so the one's who had the unenviable chore of carrying the Imp.

The first  could walk forever, the other needed to be carried! Tired indeed!

Fantastic Neeosine!

I love the one of her in the middle of the officers. Yes the photo is cropped, but it looks so delightfully silly seeing her stand out like that in a sea of men in uniform. Was that by any chance her regiment?

I am 99.9 percent sure the picture is her with her regiment (148th Caspian Infantry.) The caps and epaulettes look alike to this one:

Did Anastasia ever visit Hvidore? I thought the IF never visited Hvidore.

http://glucksburg.blogspot.com/2013/10/hvidore-property-of-empress-dagmar-and.html

This site has a photo listed as: Princess Anastasia of Russia visiting her grandmother Empress Maria Feodorovna at Hvidore - Photo: Queen Alexandra of Britain 1908

Yes it does look like a cross between Anastasia and Maria. Perhaps its one of their Danish cousins and that's why there is a physical similarity.

What does the signature at the bottom say? It looks like it says Anastasia but at the same time it doesn't look like Anastasia's handwriting from what I've seen.

I am probably in minority but the child in the picture does not look like any of the Grand Duchesses to me, although of course the quality is low and angle not ideal for identification. But I do not believe OTMA ever visited Hvidore.

Yes and no. Anastasia formed a close friendship with a Standart officer, and secondarily with his sister. She exchanged many letters in captivity with this sister and this sister wrote a memoir mentioning her and her brother's warm friendship with Anastasia. This friendship and correspondence is nicely referenced in Helen Rappaport's golden book, Romanov Sisters recently published. I read it but don't have it now. In any case, the name seems to me to be something like Zborokovsky, though that's just a possibly imprecise recollection by me.

But as a strong hunch and educated guess based on their easy familiarity in this photo, I'd say he's our man. Now for someone with  present access to "Romanov Sisters...

Indeed, they did have big feet! It's been commented on before on these forums. Their feet were especially big when you think about how in 1900, the average woman's shoe size was a 4. Today it's 8. I wouldn't be surprised of OTMA were closer to today's average.

And to avoid confusion, I used American shoe sizes.

Good call Tim. Bunions to be exact. Never heard about her needing a special shoe but I guess it's possible. I also never noticed the size of their feet and will have to pay better attention the next time I see them in photos.

Oh good -- I'm not the only one who's noticed that. I brought it up years ago. I'll have to see if I can find the post -- I believe I might have used the word "boat" to describe them :^)

If you look closely at some of the tennis pictures, you'll see Anastasia's wearing sandals rather than tennis shoes. There's a dark pair that's very easy to spot -- once you see them, you'll wonder why you never noticed before -- and a light pair that's pretty hard to see against her white stockings. You have to look for the buckles. If the sandals are any indication, the problem doesn't seem to have developed until around 1913-14.

I know which sandals you're talking about, but I never considered the fact Anastasia might have been wearing them to accommodate her foot deformity. Is that what you were getting at?

Yep. It's something Peter Kurth mentioned a while back. Otherwise I don't know whether I would have made that connection, either.

Someone posted the photo below on the "Romanov Children"'s Facebook page--it was entirely new to me, so I thought I would share it.

(https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/10941021_719034431544475_8022934598253365354_n.jpg?oh=8e6f5f86f679eaf0b3ef0c77eb19aea4&oe=5526ACFD&__gda__=1432056727_221323f5a9fe70e408612b4f15f3f3d7)

This one clearly relates to the other photo of Anastasia wearing false teeth--she has the same blouse on and even has the flower with her:

(https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/10922452_719034394877812_1856545016455450953_n.jpg?oh=241d9e0918a70ad9f17c0b6846c83864&oe=55632412&__gda__=1432347512_c109ed4e6c9247d3f2d984577b99df67)

More interestingly, she is seated in Olga and Tatiana's bedroom (see  http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/sarahelizabethii/Romanov/Alexander%20Palace/OlgaTatianasbedroomwatercolor2.jpg (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/sarahelizabethii/Romanov/Alexander%20Palace/OlgaTatianasbedroomwatercolor2.jpg)). While it is certainly possible that she moved into the other room, this photo seems to indicate that it is Olga who is sleeping in the background, not Marie.

I understood that the baptism cross was always worn under the clothes. Is that what Anastasia is wearing here? Are there any other pictures of the girls wearing their crosses on the outside? That's my first question as a new member :) I'm feeling a little giddy!

I think it is Marie and Anastasia's bedroom at the Alexander Palace--if so, a rare view indeed! The decor looks right, and Anastasia *appears* to be sitting at the desk. I can't access the photos Bryndis posted of Olga and Tatiana's bedroom at the moment, but I believe theirs has similar/identical wallpaper/tiles along one wall.

I've noticed this before but have never mentioned it until now

The GDs had HUGE feet!

Oh good -- I'm not the only one who's noticed that. I brought it up years ago. I'll have to see if I can find the post -- I believe I might have used the word "boat" to describe them :^)

Good call Tim. Bunions to be exact. Never heard about her needing a special shoe but I guess it's possible.

Apologies for quoting a 2 year old post, but I figured it's relevant.

I was lucky enough to visit Catherine Palace in June and a pair of Anastasia's shoes were on display (if, with my limited Russian knowledge, I've read the caption correctly). It was impossible to avoid the reflections on the glass as it was very crowded and I had a limited angle to work with - sorry.

I was struck by how large they were. It's difficult to get a sense of it from the photo but I am quite sure I could've easily fit into these shoes, and these were from 1909!

Here is the accompanying caption. It's somewhat blurry so I don't know if anyone will be able to decipher it, but obviously, the title says "Children's shoes" and (I think?) Anastasia's name is there.

You're right Alice, they do belong to Anastasia. You can easily decipher 'Anastasia Nikolaevna, youngest(?) daughter of Nicholas II'. She would have been 8 then, and I believe her shoes were big because of her bunions. They were made bigger to cause her comfort.

She's probably a modern day children's shoe size 9-10, or she may have breached the adult shoe size! :D

Breach may not be the right word, though.

I went into adult shoe sizes when I was eight. I also remember reading the unexpurgated version of Cinderella at about the same time and realising that I was classed with the Ugly Sisters, who cut bits off their feet to try to get into the glass slipper!

Perhaps proof that they had been reviewed? I would imagine that the photos were examined and reviewed by more than one person prior to distribution. It's a good question though. I noticed that the two images of all the children on the left have an "x" on the bottom left and the two images on the right have an "x" at the bottom right. The ones of Anastasia are marked in the bottom left corner. I wonder if there's any significance there....

Ally Kumari, would you mind revealing where these proofs came from?

Actually Nicholas allowed his daughters to smoke; giving them cigarettes which they said were gifts, and would smoke them happily. I think there's a picture of Olga smoking too. But yeah, they didn't smoke them jokingly. Maybe for this picture, as Anastasia may have been a bit too young for the time, but I don't think Nicholas is letting her jokingly allow her to smoke in this picture.

There are some photos from 1915/16 with the girls lying in a bale of hay and one of them (Anastasia I think) was smoking. I don't think anyone yet understood the health risks that smoking presented back at that time.

There is a picture somewhere in this forum of Olga sitting on a canal embankment across from Children's Island, smoking a cigarette.  (I think Anastasia is with her.)

I wonder if there exists a photo of Alexandra smoking.  That she did is certain; Anna Vyrubova wrote, "During the war, the Empress smoked cigarettes to calm her nerves..."  T'would be interesting to see a photo of her actually doing so.

Livadia possibly? Most likely lady-in-waitings to Alexandra, but I just noticed the look the other lady gives each other after Anastasia begins grilling the lady in front of her. It's the look two people give each other when they see 'drama' or an argument that includes an insult that is hilarious but you can't burst out laughing in front of them, so you give each other a look then look or move away to stifle a laugh.

Yep. Luckily Alexandra noticed it rather early and quickly and was able to contain it so it didn't effect Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Alexei. Her early experiences with the disease sure came in handy when it hit her household.

That picture must have been taken when Anastasia had recovered.

My mother had diphtheria in 1941 and the treatment then involved complete isolation and six weeks in bed, forbidden to do anything. Even her parents were not allowed to visit!

Do you think Anastasia's diphtheria had anything to do with her short stature?  Some illnesses can permanently stunt growth like that.

I don't know whether diphtheria is known for that.

My mother had it when she was 11 and was 5ft 5. She had a tall mother (5ft 9) and a 5ft 7 father, plus one tall brother and two fairly average ones (she was the only girl).

I’m not sure I ever knew of Anastasia diphtheria either. Do we know what year and month/s the illness would have occurred and who the source of this is?

I always find it interesting how the imperial family seem to be able to downplay most of their stints with illness. You hear little to nothing about what are sometimes fairly serious illnesses in letters or diary entries yet they seemed rather common. Of course some of this cageyness or reluctance to speak of their illness makes sense given Alexei’s grave condition. I suppose the Romanov were trained at lying about health as a subject.

Serious illness was far more common then. People didn't discuss it as much for the same reasons we don't talk about having the flu.

Anastasia Nikolaevna by Kaulbach. I believe this is the picture we have been hunting for years, the one that was on display in Maple room of AP.

It's also a black and white drawing though not colored like Olga, Tatiana or Maria's are, unless they were colored 'recently' and not by Kaulbach.

Black and white was normal back then.
