I would love to see this one bigger too. I've been searching it with no luck.
I'm also looking for this one, that is really tiny:

The truth is the members of the Imperial family used to sign the photographs with the date of sighning it, it wasn´t the date of the day the picture was taken.

Could anybody state the source of this information?

" ...The Empress, daughter of Christian IX of Denmark, had always shown great interest in Finland, and was by us Finns affectionately called Princess Dagmar, the Scandinavian name by which she was known as a girl. On several occasions in the 1920's when I passed through Copenhagen where the Empress spent the last years of her life, I had the opportunity to offer my former Colonel-in-Chief my homage..."

I would say this is Gatchina in the 1880s.  Very interesting the way they expand the scene by their positioning.  In most family photos they are all very close together.

They certainly look like a happy bunch!  This is years later after people had to pose for a long time for a photo and looked so serious.  I understand the idea was not to smile too much, but really...MF and her niece Victoria look miserable.

I think she had such nymph like features when she was young. She was very pretty, I think she is actually prettier then Alexandra, the Princes of Wales when they were young.
Empress Maria Feodorovna is not well known to me (yet), but she intrigues me. Have ordered a few books, any 'must read' about her??

They are probably onboard Polar Star, especially if the Tsar was with them.  When the Empress had traveled alone, she traveled in her own yacht,  the Tsarevna.  Also, the open railing was the style of the Polar Star.

Shackleton was a polar explorer, famous for his trip to the south pole on the ship "Endurance", which got trapped by ice and eventually was destroyed, so all the expeditioners had to live on an island until Shackleton himself with two members of his crew sailed in a boat searching for help.

Tsar and his mother abord an Imperial yacht
(http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt131/GrandDuchessAlly/rare%20pics/th_img357-1.jpg) (http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt131/GrandDuchessAlly/rare%20pics/img357-1.jpg)

I'm fairly sure this is the Polar Star.  At the right there is a descending companionway with a brown coconut fiber doormat at the entrance to wipe your feet on.  The sailors are dressed in the style of the Imperial Yachts for formal occasions.

Nicholas  appears to be very nonchalant.  This was often his pose when his mother was trying to be very proper and formal.  I don't know who the man is that she is greeting.  Anyone know? Might he be the British monarch?

At the left on the deck is a folded up rope ladder.  The sailors can throw that ladder over the side so that they can access the lifeboat below.

wonder if it was brass or if it was silver?? Sometimes a camera with flash gives an odd shade to the metal. Most certainly am going to see that! Eggs, Tiara's and jewelry!

I think I calculated once Dowager Empress to be just a bit shorter thsn Nicholas II, what would be approximately 160 cm, while AIII was very tall, unlike his wife. Maybe even above 2 meters, GD Alexander Mikhailovich was 190 cm.

A picture that shows the hight difference between MF and Alexander III, and I would say more than usual. Sorry for the quality of the picture but it is real small.

Sh´e standing behind him, not beside, so the difference is not accurate in the picture....

Kmerov - would you happen to know how much money Dagmar´s coronation dress cost? I have read somewhere a comparism in prize between hers and Alexandra´s gowns and although the coronation of Nicholas II. cast more, the dress of the Tsarina was much more expensive in 1883. Unfortunatelly I lost the info...

I think Minny cared more for dresses than Alicky. For the younger woman, comfort was the main factor in her clothes.

There actually seem to be enough dresses of both Marie and Alexandra left to mount a serious exhibition in imperial dress style for both public and private and when you think you've seen them all a new one will pop up in an exhibition somewhere....some day we'll see that exhibition!

Empress Maria had a wonderful taste for clothes, I think. I've always liked her special choice for bright colours. She didn't like to be unseen at a part, didn't she?  ;D

I must said I'm amazed about how dresses were colorful at the lates 1800's and earliest 1900. I have some old reviews from back then and when they depicts dresses my mouth goes wide open, like my eyes, since I just can't believe how many colours they would wear in a same outfit! And there were "tea gowns", "theater gowns", "party gowns", "promenade gowns " (to go to walk a little), and even "visit gowns"...WOW...One more beatiful and colorful than another.

wonder if it was brass or if it was silver?? Sometimes a camera with flash gives an odd shade to the metal. Next time I am in Europe, I am going to make sure to stop and see the collection in Amsterdam. By the end of November, the Faberge collection will be on display in Houston. Most certainly am going to see that! Eggs, Tiara's and jewelry!

Regarding the 2 photos of Maria Feodorovna’s uniforms originally posted by Kmerov : they’re not showing the same uniform. MF was « Shef » (Colonel-in-Chief) of 2 of the 4 Guards’ Cuirassier regiments. The first photo (colour) shows her uniform of « Her Majesty Empress Maria Feodorovna’s Guards Cuirassier Regiment » (stationed in Gatchina). The regiment’s lace was gold and their distinctive colour was mid-blue, hence their nickname of « Blue Cuirassiers ». Here’s another photo of her full-dress uniform :

The gold lace did tarnish somewhat and has taken an orange shade, possibly due to some copper content. Oddly enough, for full-dress the men had grey-blue breeches, and for ball-dress dark-blue trousers (with mid-blue piping) but the Empress wore a white skirt instead of a blue one as she should have done.

The 2nd (black & white) photo of MF shows her in uniform of « Her Majesty Empress Maria Feodorvna’s Chevalier Guards Regiment » (stationed in St. Petersburg), which had silver braid and red wool on collar & cuffs. Here’s a photo of the same uniform:

In this case, the white skirt does match the white breeches men of this regiment wore on Palace duty, a privilege they shared with the Horse Guards Cuirassiers. Although she had been Colonel-in-Chief of the Chevalier Guards since 1881, she first wore its uniform for the 1899 regimental jubilee. The b&w photo seems to have been taken for the occasion.

Interesting to note that her son GD Michael served in both regiments (he even commanded the Chevalier Guards for a year) and was kicked out from both due to his affair with – and later – his wedding to Nathalie Wulfert-Brasova.

Empress Maria was also Colonel-in-Chief of the following regiments : Naval Guards (Garde Equipage), Her Majesty Empress Maria Feodorovna’s 11th Siberian Rifle Regiment, Her Majesty Empress Maria Feodorovna’s 2nd Leib-Pskov Dragoons, Her Majesty Empress Maria Feodorovna’s 11th Chuguev Lancers. The last three had her monogram on their epaulettes & shoulder boards.

Toscany,

I wish I remember which thread it was that mentioned the picture seemed like a farewell to his army since the picture was supposedly taken in 1894. As you know, that was the year  the Tsar died. In my opinion, the Tsar looks gaunt in the picture and seems to validate that it was taken in 1894. But then again, we can't judge from the picture alone (we have to consider the anlges, quality, lighting, etc.). If any, the picture was taken at Krasnoie Selo. I hope someone can verify that the Tsar attended the manouevres for the last time before travelling to Bialowezia in 1894.

Also, I can't tell where the Empress Maria Feodorovna is in that picture.

Internal injuries are sometimes hard to detect.

The urine samples identified that Alexander III  had developed end stage kidney disease.

Alexander III's medical status was not a mystery at all.

I recall reading about the terrible train accident.  That was in 1888.  It was believed that he suffered an injury from the accident which developed into nephritus (Kidney failure).  He was still a young man.

Alexander III received two insults to his body that are worth noting here:

Professor Grube, the clinician who observed the Emperor shortly after the Borki train accident concluded that Alexander III had sustained a blunt trauma in the kidney region.  Complications when left untreated may lead to hypertension that will contribute to renal insufficiency.

In January 1894,  Alexander III was diagnosed with influenza and was urged to rest. Today clinicians are aware that left untreated, influenza can progress to end stage kidney disease in weeks or months.

His clinicians advised him to seek a warmer climate. His condition was terminal. He traveled from Gatchina to Belovezh Forest before finally settling down in the Crimea to die.

Ps: me thinks that in the third picture Maria is wearing a Match coat, not the dress itself.

Yes, I think you are right about a matching coat over the dress. They tended to make sets - eg a skirt with differing bodices you could mix and match and they also did matching coats at the coture houses. It would be amazing if the coat had survived along with the dress.

Actually, looking at it again I don't think it is a coat. It looks like she is just holding a fur stole around her neck.  You can still see the skirt embroidery around her waist in the photo which you wouldn't be able to see if she had a coat over the top and her sleaves look remarkable unaltered and they shape would be different from the weight of the fabric with a coat.

Indeed. Not Xenia.

There is a fur coat that used to belong to MF in the Olga Museum in Bellerup. It might be the same one she later wore photographed with the big Cossak.

I thought this picture might appeal to some people here. It is from a June 2, 1883 edition of "the Queen - the lady's newspaper" which was sold in London. It shows Empress Marie Feodorovna in her coronation dress. While the portrait isn't spot on it's a respectable rendition of her dress I thought.

(http://inlinethumb14.webshots.com/19853/2550015340102753164S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://entertainment.webshots.com/photo/2550015340102753164gBUFuq)

The magazine had this to say about this engraving : -

"The dress worn by the Czarina  at the ceremony of the Czar's coronation, which took place on May 27 at Moscow, was of unparalled richness. Our illustration is from a photograph taken by M. Bergamasco, at St. Petersburg.  The robe is cloth of silver embroidery, worked by hand.  The length of the train from the waist is six yards, and it's weight is 68lb.  The cost of the dress was 1000 pounds, and six pages bore the train.  Over this dress the empress was arrayed during the ceremony in a mantle similar to the one worn by the emperor.  It was purple velvet, lined with ermine, and on the centre back the imperial eagle was embroidered.  All the ornaments worn by her imperial majesty on this occassion would be too numerous to mention in detail.  One of the principal ones was the collar of the order of St. Andrew in unsurpassable beautiful diamonds, and it's effect was dazzling.  The crown jewllers were occupied for several weeks befor the ceremony in putting the crown into order; it is valued at one million two hundred thousand pounds. The diamonds it contains are magnificent, so are the fifty four enormous diamonds it contains are magnificent, sor are the fifty four enormous pearls without a blemis, and the ruby is phenomenal; the workmanship, need we add, is faultless.  "

This does make a lie of the often stated fact that no photos were taken of Marie and Alexander dressed for their coronation.

Actually I just noticed it in the enlarged photo of Minny. There are many reference to her sister Alix's love for snake bracelets. Her niece Missy wrote that her Aunt Alix's snake bracelet seemed to be part of her arm...

Title: Re: Empress Marie Feodorovna - discussion and pictures, Part II

That is why I speculate that the snake bracelet or bangle is still in the family.

If it really still exists.... ??

That is why I speculate that the snake bracelet or bangle is still in the family.

According to Menkes in Royal jewels the bracelet is still in the royal collection but it's a piece the current Queen really dislikes.  From what I can see in paintings of Alix wearing the bracelet it was gold with gem set eyes.  In art and jewellery in olden days snakes represented wisdom and they had a secondary meaning of rebirth and renewal. Alix also had a fascination with the exotic and this sort of jewel fit in with that interest.

Because Alix wore her snake bracelet constantly they became very fashionable in Victorian times and it wouldn't surpise me to find that Dagmar's bracelet was a gift from Alix.

Title: Re: Empress Marie Feodorovna - discussion and pictures, Part II
Post by: katmaxoz on December 28, 2009, 03:47:59 PM
Why does she dislike it??

I would guess because it is a snake. Many people don't like snakes no matter where they are found.  Alix found it exotic but I guess the Queen only sees it for a snake on her arm. You can find a lot of gold and jewelled snakes in antique dealers when you go looking. Some are of fabulous workmanship with the entire body flexable, but Alix and Dagmar's snakes seem to be of the more rigid kind.

Here's part of a large double page print from the Illustrated London News dated June 16,1883 which shows Marie and Alexander after their coronation in the Nevsky Hall in the Kremlin Palace. It may not be wholly accruate but I'll bet it gives a reasonable idea of what this part of the event was like.

I read in a biography years ago that Alexandra used to do callestentics each morning to keep her figure and ate lightly. It didn't happen by accident.  I don't know if Dagamar did something similar, if I so I've never read it anywhere.

Almost definitely. The sisters once co-ordinated their wardrobes during Dagmar's visit with her family to England. They were dressed exactly alike every time they appear in public during that visit. So they definitely have shared dress information.

I know this horror only too well. It forces you to do a major cull of what you own. It can be quite heartbreaking as books take up a LOT of space to store.

I've had to move every 3 yrs as an Air Force wife. My huge collection of books, not to mention bound volumes of old magazines (THEY weigh a ton!) make me very unpopular with the movers, I'm afraid. Not to mention that the last time we moved, we went over our weight limit that the AF assigns.  :-[  Hubby got me a Kindle this Christmas to help cut down with some of my books but I don't know when most of the royal books will come out electronically. I did put The Last Princess on the Kindle my 'to buy' list. That was one of the few titles that was available and put in a request for Romanov Autumn to come out in a Kindle version. Since it isn't that picture heavy, I think it would transfer well.

Sometimes the captions under the photos in some books make me laugh: "Alexander III with spouse and DAUGHTER". : )

Really svetabel? that s what the caption says? xDDD. Thats absolutely wrong (but funny.. Alix as daughter of Maria and alexandr xDDD)

and no, Eric. Its easier to say they real names, even more when they re spelt different and makes difficult to find topic about those people when you use the "search" engine.
Title: Re: Empress Marie Feodorovna - discussion and pictures, Part II
Post by: Eric_Lowe on January 26, 2010, 12:33:01 PM
I think I will put both names down. Then it would be easier to identify. In another thread someone mixed up Olga Alexandrovna with Olga Nichoievena. Also the correct form of address is Marie in the Russian court (it uses French). So it would be Marie Feodorovna not Maria Feodorovna. Anyway there are too many Maries in the Russian Court.

Yes. But the profile is another photo iswhat convinced me.

Have you ever tried look not only at the profile but at the dress-styles for example? Such buff sleeves were in fashion till 1897-1898 years. Marie of Greece was then a young woman, with not such an old face/profile and hair-do of a middle-aged woman.

It could have been Empress Marie writing Minny referring to her niece. If it was her signing it, would she write 'self' or something perhaps or even Dagmar? As I said, I will defer to Svetabel as she's so good with ID's but I can't get over that it just looks more like 'Greek Minny' than Marie F to me. And in group bike photos, that is exactly the costume that Marie of Greece wore--big sleeves and all.

Yes you are right, it could be that MF was referring to her niece, if it is her handwritting. I'm not that familiar with Greek Minnys handwritting.
I think MF would sign Minny on a picture of herself if she gave it to some close relative.
I would also trust Svetabel in giving the right ID. She is an expert. But then again I wonder, would MF then age 50 take a bike picture or ride a bike? You mostly see the younger generation with bikes. The woman does look older then a 20 year old Greek Minny though, but she was also a bit matronly looking, and she wore her hair up. But tricky picture indeed.

Yes, I'm sure that she would do it under private circumstances, but I was thinking more if she would consider riding a bike or taking pictures with a bike suitable for a 50 year old woman. But maybe she would, thinking they were for private views only.

It is a newspaper quality photo that would not be made into a postcard for ebay. Loosen up !  ;)

I think I see Aunt Swan there with one of the black pearls.

I didn't realise that, but personally I don't like watermarks on photos and will always look for one without it in preference.....and I'm not worked up about eBay. The people who were selling those images seem to have long gone.

according some member, here still are active members selling prints about pics ripped from here. I dont kknow but to avoid, i rather put a huge watermark in "rare" pictures. You never know...

Yes. on rare and perfectly clear photos. Newspaper photos are usually blurry have very visable dot marks if enlarged. So those should besafe. I don't like watermarks too.

No it couldn't be 1899 since Queen Louise died in 1898 and also the fashion is wrong. Looks more like 1889 or before that.

1899. The lady is actually Alexandra of Wales. The baby is indeed Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna, held by her mother Alexandra. Beside her is Nicholas and Marie Fyodorovna. In the background you can see leaving little Grand Duchess Tatiana.

Hardly, because she passed away a year before that. So Grand Duke Georgiy is more probable.
As for the lady in the backgrounf, I would say Princess Toria, but that is JUST a guess.....

That certainly can't be Nicholas II?  For one thing the man is taller than Alexandra by a bit.  He's also too thin and from what we can see of the side of his face he looks too old.  Even the hat looks wrong for him.  I'm no expert but that isn't Nicholas II IMHO.

I may have made a mistake, but it was labelled as Nicholas II. on the website where I found it. I don´t think he looks too think or old, and I have seen him wearing various types of hats. Plus I would say Alexandra holding the baby is crouched down a bit.

It's definitely Christian X, aldo I first thought it also could be king George I of Greece. But I found the following two pictures that show it is Christian X, because the archive said so..wink..( and also he is wearing a hat in this shots, just like the man that's next to Alexandra Feodorovna and Maria Feodorovna). The lady with grand duchess Tatiana is also definitely Toria.

In the background (crown) princess Alexandrine with little Frederick, (crown) prince Christian X, and probably a nanny (?) with Maria Nikolaevna (?). In front the children of Alexandra and Nicholas, Marie and Waldemar. The picture was taken around 1900, so their not in mourning for Dronning Louise, because she died in 1898.

You're welcomme. Yes a moving camera did capture this photosession at film. It was used (or atleast thats were I have seen it) in the most wonderful documentairy 'A Royal family' by Anna Lerche. It also appeared at the intro (song) of this serie.

It's happens! But I have studied the picture very carefully and I can say that the woman (with the hat) next to Christian X and Alexandra Feodorovna is not 'Minnie', but crown-princess Alexandrine, wife of Christian X! Because when you watch carefully, you can see 'Minnie' is not wearing a hat in the group-picture (and the pictures were taken a few minutes apart) and Alexandrine is the only woman that is wearing a hat (with the two little bows, just like the lady next to Christian X and Alexandra F.). You can also see that Alexandrine is wearing some sort of short jacket over her dress. 'Minnie''only wears a black dress, just like her sister and other female members of the family in this picture (Marie Orleans, Alix Feodorovna and Toria). Alexandrine and Christian may just arrived, as she is still wearing a hat, coat/jacket and gloves, that a travelings outfit or an outfit to leave the house. The lady next to Alexandra F. and Christian X is also wearing a jacket, so after so much evidence it must be Alexandrine and not 'Minny'.

Greetings!

Minny looked thin with her two more portly ladies-in-waiting. In fact, she never lost her slim figure.

Yes, MF was more petite then the two sisters Kutusova who she loved. The sisters by the way were known for providing the court with many amusing anecdotes and laughs with their behaviour.

Countess Mengden, MF's lady-in-waiting who lived with her after the revolution was much younger than MF, so it is probably her.

Zinaide Mengden

No, she she was not married and she didn't have any children.

Her family was close with the Imperial family. One of her brothers was Lord Chamberlain at the court of GD Sergei Alexandrovich and GDss Ella.

Thanks. About their relationship to Minny.

He was the famous Antarctic explorer--very well-known in his day (starting rougly around 1901) though later overshadowed by others. His reception by the royals was well-covered in the newspapers and magazines of the time. He died in 1922 on expedition and the royal family was represented at his memorial service at St Paul's. Kenneth Branagh played him a well-received film Shackleton. Interestingly, his brother Frank  would achieve notoriety as a suspect, later exonerated, in the 1907 theft of Ireland's Crown Jewels.

Title: Re: Empress Marie Feodorovna - discussion and pictures, Part II
Post by: RealAnastasia on April 28, 2010, 10:54:54 PM
Yes. They are. Dagmar was the name she received when she was born, in Denmark. It's a very popular Danish name. But when she married future Tsar Alexander III, and changed her lutheran faith to the Orthodox one, she took the name "Maria Feodorovna", just like Alix would do later in life. Remember that she was born as Alix of Hesse, and she become Empress Alexandra Feodorovna.

Thanks !I was getting a bit confused. She was Dagmar Marie, and so Marie was used for her name in Russian. Minny (Minnie) & Minerly was used by her family as nicknames.
Title: Re: Empress Marie Feodorovna - discussion and pictures, Part II
Post by: RealAnastasia on April 30, 2010, 11:36:56 PM
Yes! And Maria was her official name in Russian. However, it seems that family would call her rather "Marie" or even "Minnie", who certainly is a cute nickname.

There were often used the names which were similiar to the original or were already "in" the name and which worked with russian names. f.e. Dagmar was born as Marie Sophie Frederikke Dagmar, Louise of Baden got the name Elisaveta (as Louise is a diminuitive of Elisabeth) and Alix took the name Alexandra.

The original statue is in Copenhagen. I posted some info on the statue in the Danish RF section way back. It's in the Carlsberg (Danish brewing company) museum, whose owner had statues made of MF and her sister Alexandra.

The Danish RF visiting Carlsberg to see the statues who are not visible in 1892.
