Don't know who have painted this. I've found on Google ^^.

This was painted in 1907 by Nikolai Kornilyevich Bodarevsky.  Here is a link to a large version of the portrait

A few more of Alexandra

---The two above are different versions of the same portrait, you can see how images were recycled throughout the empire & foreign relatives by differing artists from an original template---

I don't know I'm afraid. There were many portraits painted like this in the 19th century from Alexandra's offical photos. Some other member may have the information.

Same think with Koppay`s portrait. There s a B&W version and the original in colors. You gotta think there s no many books that prints portraits in color...

Attention Reply # 54:  As to the importance of the GD Michael A. in the first illustration in Reply # 53, remember that UNTIL GD Alexei N. was born (and since GD George A. had died), GD Michael A. was HEIR to the throne, thus next in line as Emperor (which of course, he very oddly/tragically attained for a very brief period of hours). This illustration was apparently made before the birth of GD Alexei N.   Regards,  AP.

actually it was an illustration, not a painting. There must be some records of the artist who made the illustrations in the Petit Journal and how they used to make them. I will look for some info.

No, i mean that the image of Nicholas in that illustration was inspired in a real portrait of him. Same thing with Alexandra image with Tatiana and Olga, which i think, it was based on a picture.

Those are all beautiful. Now is it just me or in the individual paintings of Alix, does her face looks a bit less full and eyes wider in the second than in the first?
Title: Re: Empress Alexandra - paintings and portraits

I think that the second was an awful copy of the first, as you can see her face doesn't look well on the second, it's not totally the same, also see thah her necklace looks different too

WOW   that detail from voyager is  amazing... Ill have to find the big picture...!

I get the impression  from so many paintings and illustrations that Alexandra was a little highly strung and  perhaps  she  did  nt relax enough with people and communicate to the masses.

Nicholas on the other hand looks easy going and contented...
a mans man... with a wonderful young family
of  girls who must have adored their handsome  father.
And yet...perhaps at home with Alexandra  during those  years   he was a little hen pecked !

Yes it is for the same artist, tbh I don’t like it for the same reason you mentioned the artist have messed up with the eyes; the most crucial part of painting a face is to capture the shape and look of the eyes.

and it's  too bad because it's quite accomplished otherwise...but  indeed ,the eyes are, imo, the most important part of a portrait ...one can forgive a wrong mouth, but not wrong eyes.

Attention "larri*-otmaprivatealbums" and your Post # 166:  A clarification, so as not to confuse things.  IMO the FRAME is by the Faberge workmaster, Michael Perchin, who also oversaw (until his death) most of the well-known "Egg Production."  Though Perchin was very talented, I am not aware that portrait/miniature painting was one of his talents.  These duties/contracts went to appropriate contractual personnel, either in-house or outside. You will note that this miniature is signed just above the right shoulder of the Empress.   Regards,  AP.

This portrait is signed by the Danish miniaturist Johannes Zehngraf.

Rudy you are correct, I've read the full information and they mention Johannes Zehngraf. Thank you for the correction and sorry for the mistake =)

Response to Reply # 175:  "Did the artist paint any other royals?"   Johannes Zehngraf painted the miniatures of the Empress Maria F.'s parents, the king and queen of Denmark, for the "surprise" in the missing (though a photo still exists) Faberge "Danish Silver Jubilee Egg."  He likewise painted the miniatures of the Emperor Nicholas II and his first two children in the Faberge "Lillies of the Valley" Egg, etc.   As for the miniature shown in the Perchin/Faberge frame in Posting # 166, it is definitely a painting, IMO.     AP.

I thought you'd post that. He's hit a home run this time. (American slang meaning : well done ) The eyes are particularly fine, and you can see the girls in this portrait. A good portrait is almost a montage of images...before and after . It's well a glimpse of AF's mother and daughters can be seen as one looks over the features and yet it's Alix

I agree, it is well painted and far more better than his first AF’ portrait especially when it comes to painting her eyes.

Yes, they also went to France in 1901. And there's even a book about this visit, an exhibition catalogue in French, with a lot of pictures, including the above one in colour: "Un Tsar à Compiègne. Nicholas II, 1901" ; ISBN 2-7118-4301-7 ; about 150 pp.

This Russian site (http://baget.org.ua/gallery/16) includes many modern paintings about the IF, but the ones I want to share here are the first two, showing Alexandra pregnant (if I understood well, pregnant with Alexei ? )....  :-\
Title: Re: Empress Alexandra - paintings and portraits
Post by: Alixz on August 03, 2011, 01:17:45 PM
I don't read Russia, but I have my doubts that the portraits of Alexandra pregnant were done with her permission or while she was alive.

Victorian women didn't even "go out" or "receive" while pregnant.  I remember being told that after a woman began to "show" she would stay in and always keep a throw over her lap so as to not show the pregnancy. (I wish that more women today would be half as circumspect.  I get so tired of seeing "bumps" (as they are now called ) at the mall).

Women of Alexandra's day might have been overly circumspect, but women today have no modesty when it comes to being pregnant. It may just be another fact of being human, but so is using the bathroom and I wouldn't want to see that in the center of the mall either.

Does anyone read Russian who an tell us what is written under the pictures?

Hmm. I like the one of Nicholas and the one of Nicholas and Alexei very much, they are lovely, and I like the ethereal effect, but the ones of Alix are just weird. The first two I don't like because of the low decolletage, it just seems sort of disrespectful to their memory to paint Alix like that, plus the second one her face is too narrow. If that one of the boy with a candle is supposed to be Alexei, then  :o He looks like he's 30, not 13 or younger! The one of Alix based on a photo, she looks stiff as a board! The one of OTMA is all right--they look stiff too.

I thought they must be modern.  The poses of Alix proudly "holding" her pregnant stomach are way too modern.  Women show off pregnancy in that way now, but as far I as I know not in the late 1800s to early 1900s.

They're deffinitively modern portraits! Not only for the pose but also for the style of the paintings (all). There's no problem at it, it was only result of the imagination of a modern painter. I even doubt that Alexandra would had accepted to be portrayed as this   :-\

I would have said the the clothing and the honors were wrong for Alix of Hesse as well.

This woman looks to be in deep mourning and wearing honors that look more British.

If he truly thought that Alix looked like that, I guess it is his opinion, but if this painting was done in 1889, who was she in deep mourning for?

She would have only been 17.  That women looks far to old to be Alix at 17 and as yet unmarried and living at home.

In 1889 Alix, Princess of Wales would have been in deep mourning for her son Prince Albert Victor, but Alix of Hesse as a cousin would not have been in "deep"mourning.

Well, the painters or illustartors (depending the case) frequently took some liberties when they made their work, I wouldn't be surprised of this. But yes, it looks like some kind of cottage made in Russian style, sorry the source didn't add much information.

I would be really grateful if someone could answer this for me.

In Massie's book. "Nicholas and Alexandra" there is a portrait of Alexandra (a photo) ... she is in court dress with a tiara but she only has on one glove.

Does anyone know the reason why she is only wearing one glove?

I'm sure it's not earth-shatteringly important but it did strike me as a little odd.

thank you.

The photo if I recall was one of a series taken when Alexandra was dressed for the ceremony of the opening of the Duma in 1906.  Therefore your question was answered in this post:
http://forum.alexanderpalace.org/index.php?topic=715.msg86590#msg86590.  Essentially, wearing one glove is to enable the wearer to cross themselves with their ungloved hand.  The state opening of the Duma had religious components; you can see Alexandra and Maria Feodorovna standing behind a priest in one photograph of this ceremony and presumably they would have crossed themselves at a point, or points, of the process.

It's actually an illustration from the official coronation album, and shows Nicholas and Alexandra arriving at the Montebello Ball (1896). Getty got this wrong...:-)

I couldn't decide where to put this, since it is both a painting and photo question, but here it goes:

Can anyone identify the photograph this miniature of Alexandra from the Fifteenth Anniversary Egg is based on?

Usually you can identify the series, if not the exact photo, that the miniaturist used. I'm having trouble with this one though--it looks to me like it is based on the 1898 photos taken by Karl Hahn, such as this one:

But in the photos where she appears alone, she is shown wearing a diadem and her earrings have changed. I also haven't been able to find one where she appears in profile. Has anyone seen a image from this series where she is shown like this? Or does anyone else know what other photo/s it might be based on? Thanks in advance!
