Title: What's On The Menu Tonight At Your Place.
Post by: Lindelle on April 13, 2010, 03:13:52 AM
I thought about all the different cultures at this forum and how interesting to hear about the different types of meals we all have.
Something fun, but very different, as what I would claim to quite a boring meal may be gourmet to you.
Here goes,

Well tonight I DON"T KNOW what's on the menu as we are going to our son and daughter-in-laws for dinner.
Now that could be different.
Will post tomorrow what we ended up with.

Bon Apetite!

Cool, we were already having this discussion in le thread français, of course :-)

Yesterday I had poached pollock with boiled cabbage, onion and lingonberry jelly.
Tonight I will have Kassler (salted cut of pork rib), probably with boiled cabbage and a raw carrot.

What's lingonberry?

Tonight as said in earlier post we ended up having butternut chicken and rice.
Followed by chocolate mousse and a nice bottle of red.

What's lingonberry?
Quite similar to cranberries. NAOTMAA might have known them as Брусника.

Yesterday I had Magret with armagnac and pepper corn cream sauce with sauteed garlic potatoes and spinach. I quaffed some really lovely Cote du Rhone with it!
I had a generous hunk of Stilton and a couple of water biscuits afterwards!

I do not eat puddings!

Yesterday we had boiled eggs, Karelia's pies and salad with cucumber, tomatoes and macaroni.
Today we had chicken soup.

Karelia's pie is basically a thin ryebread filled with white rise. Here's a pic http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_lNbV-8IlwtI/SZB0ruzWcjI/AAAAAAAAAKU/W63gQ6hfs-c/s400/karjalan.jpg (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_lNbV-8IlwtI/SZB0ruzWcjI/AAAAAAAAAKU/W63gQ6hfs-c/s400/karjalan.jpg)

I won't have anything interesting to contribute to this until I leave college, because my campus serves some of the worst and strangest food imaginable. One day they had leftovers to get rid of, so they tried to put them all together as a mushroom and pineapple pizza. How is that appetizing in any way??

Hooray for pizza! Last night I had sausages, fried egg and bread and butter. When the yolk from the fried egg is all over my plate, I get the bread and butter and soak it up, and then eat it! I know it sounds revolting, but it's actually quite nice, and it cleans your plate!  :)

Haha yes, me too :) tonight I am going with about 20 of my friends to what we call a 'fish and chip sleep', basically we walk about 2 miles to the nice fish and chip shop in a town near ours, then we buy some, eat them on the way back, and sleep in a selected building (the top floor of our church, which is currently just over the road from me) and, well, we don't actually SLEEP, we stay up all night giggling endlessly and sharing secrets and stories!  ;D

Bet you probably don't feel much like eating anyway.

We're having soup tonight. I made heaps last weekend and had to freeze some, so fresh rolls with that will be nice.

Nah, we had the heating on all night. No, you don't sound like my mother much, she ain't bothered about stuff like that. Just so long as I have my sleeping bag, she tells me...I brought N &A! My friends were all like "How much more information can you take in on these people?!" We actually had hot chocolate there, but it was cold. :( Our culinary skills are nothing short of rubbish...a packet of sweets and some burnt toast is our limit!

I think some of us only chime in here when we have a menu we are proud to share :-) Or something that half-way measures up to imperial standards. Like me tonight:

On the menu tonight:
Salmon baked with spices and onion. With raw carrot and rutabaga.
For dessert, chocolate pudding with vanilla sauce.

BTW before I had to look up the French and English names for rutabaga aka Swedish turnip, I had never realized that it's native to Russia and my native Scandinavia!
So its title "orange of the North" (because of the high level of C vitamins, not the taste!) is even more fitting!

Fyodor, it's vegetable soup with chunks of meat in it. I made that much of it last week that I'm able to thaw it out.
But we didn't end up having it last night as I felt like toasted Breville sandwiches instead,

Haha, yes it does make me feel better! :) What I think is great on this forum is that, IMO, we fit together just like a family. We come from all over the world, evidently eat lots of varieties of food (although sometimes have to resort to pizza!), have all different tastes and like things that other members don't, but we are united in our love for the Romanovs!

Churros are a pastry that are sometimes referred to as "Spanish Doughnuts". They are made of fried dough that is usually fried until they are crispy and then sprinkled with sugar.
I have family in Peru, so my sister and I make them the way they are made there: long, wide and filled with either chocolate, vanilla or dulce de leche (milk caramel). People usually eat them for breakfast with thick hot chocolate, but we eat 'em for desert. They are so fattening, but sooooo good!

Oh gosh...I've had churros once of twice in the past and they're gooooood...only the cinnamon kind though. I've never heard of them filled with chocolate or vanilla though. What a fantastic idea :P

Tonight I had some pasta with marinara sauce and grilled chicken...it was one of those healthy frozen things but was pretty good.

Venison?

Lindelle, it is deer meat! My grandfather goes hunting every hunting season and he always brings tons of meat home then goes to some friend i think who makes venison and stuff and that's where he all the venison that is like stockpiled in our back porch freezer! But that's okay I'm the family carnivore so i guess the more meat the better right?

Ha,ha yeah, more for you.

I'm a bit of a sook when it comes to meat,no matter what type.
I will eat it but I really have to have it mixed with something nice.
I much prefer fish, could eat that every night.
My father was a butcher so I've seen all sorts of meat before it's even hit the shop and as a little one, I cried a lot because of it.

But Romanov this is interesting as it tells me about the different food culture.
Do you have venison often.I mean is it a staple meal?

More recently for the last couple of nights unless someone wants to fry up some fish fillets (store bought bag) but recently yeah we've been having it almost every night... sometimes what is good with it is mashed potatoes but it was just venison tonight as we're out of instant potatoes! but either way a couple nights ago we had i think he said a 4 point buck and he could tell because of the thickness and chewiness of the meat! You have venison burgers, venison chops (kinda pork chop like) and of course venison steak ALL awesome just different cuts and makes!  :)

« Qu'ils mangent de la brioche ! », Marie-Antoinette may have said, and that's just what I did - for dinner - yesterday!

I'm having a more normal, healthy dinner tonight: Chicken fillets fried with fresh thyme and brown rice with brown sauce flavoured with Norwegian brown cheese and fresh lovage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lovage).
(I was quite surprised when I recently read that along with other related celery, parsley and hemlock species, grouped together as aches in French, it has featured on some heraldic coronets, as feuilles / fleurons d'ache!)

Since it's rhubarb season now, I've been eating raw rhubarb with sugar for dessert the last days. I will make some rhubarb porridge this weekend.

Out for dinner tonight and because I love the restaurant I already know what I'll have.
Garlic bread,
1 dozen oysters, half kilpatrick and the other half mornay,
Pork spare ribs and baked vegetables with a sauce I'm undecided about yet.

Oooohhhhh, do you have a recipe for rhubarb pie?

My favourite is made with shortcrust pastry dough and with sugar and cinnamon sprinkled on the rhubarb.

As a result of a recent special offer, my freezer currently contains lots of frozen fish from Findus. Guess I thus may indirectly be supporting the corrupt, "poverty-stricken" Sarah, Duchess of York! But I loved her impertinent, wonderfully irreverant Turkish orphanage stunt so much that I am happy to do so.

LOL... then later, i went over for a BBQ at my aunt's house, but was too full to chow down. WELL!!!!!
We are SUPPOSED to be having Honey Baked Chicken and vegetables BUT my husband just walked in from work and started adjusting knobs on the stove.
I'm like "What are you doing, you think I don't know how to cook?"
He say's, "Oh - well the veg's are boiling".
I say, "They're SUPPOSED TO BE!!!!!"

So I switched EVERYTHING OFF and said he can fend for himself now!

I hate it when people come into MY kitchen and start behaving like they own it or know what's cookin'. I had a friend who used to do that to me and it made me livid, now my husbands doing it!

If only my three boys would think of things like that when I'm down, only, the youngest lives at home now and HE is hopeless, a fireman, but otherwise hopeless around the house. Once I had a fire in my brand new oven and all he could do was keep putting food in his mouth as he watched it. Geez!!

AGH! >:( I had already typed this out, but my computer decided to do something and go to another page getting rid of my post! I hate it when that happens!

Yup! My mommy is very good to me. I'd give her a big hug but  she just had back surgery a couple of months ago and has to were a brace so its probably not the best idea. So I just give her little ones and  :-* and tell her I love her all the time. Even the little ones are uncomfortable...for both people hugging.

So we didn't have potatoes, but we did have baked beans. The clean up wasn't so bad tonight either (I'm the one who has to clean up the kitchen and take care of the food), 'cause my cousin and his girlfriend came over today 'cause they just had a baby a couple of weeks ago and its premature (like me!  :)) so he's in the neonatal at the hospital. And my cousin is staying in our camper on weekends to be close by and they had dinner with us so there wasn't allot to take care of. The coolest part though is they named their baby Castiel after the angel on Supernatural!

My grandmother is making tons of Italian food tonight, like pasta she bought from there, probably pan-cooked veal which everybody is crazy about, caprese salad (TRY IT, it is SO GOOD) etc.

Yesterday it was -garden-grilled self-fished mackerel from the mouth of the fjord where King Harald the Hairfair united all of Norway through a naval battle in 872.

Interesting thread as we can see what peole eat in everyday life all around the world! I am afraid our nasty caricatural representation of youngs American eating burgers and pasta was not so fare of the reality, isn' it (o, I don't want to be offensive, don't worry!) Thanks God,there is Lindelle yet!! Here my children had okroshka, a russian summer soup. Cut very little different vegetables (boiled potatoes, cuncumber, radis) eggs and meat, add a glass of kvas and the refreshing meal is ready! And for me, a french mediteranean veggetables meal called ratatouille with millet.

Everybody's food sounds very good. Lindelle, I've been wanting to try ratatouille for a long time! And what is rissole?

Not sure what I'm having tonight, but last night was my dad's 39th birthday. So we had tortilla-crusted tilapia (YUM), steak, rosemary rolls, caprese pasta (mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, basil), and grilled tomatoes.

Also cake--my sister made it with black beans somehow, so it was low-carb for my dad, and it was actually one of the best cakes I've ever had--really moist and chocolatey, with this ganache-like stuff on top.

Abbigail, a rissole is kind of like a large meatball.
Made from mince, it has onion, egg, tomato sauce, bbq sauce and hot sauce mixed in.Rolled and then baste with flour and fry. YUMMY.
Though Rosie's recipe for rissole's may differ.

Well we did end up going to my aunts and uncle's, but a couple hours after we were originally going to. My grandpa fell off his porch last night and then waited till this morning to call someone, so they took him to the hospital. He's OK, but they're going to keep him in there for three or four days just to make sure nothing happens. But once we figured out he was OK, we were told that everything was going as planned so we had burgers, hotdogs, sausage, peppers, baked beans, potato salad, and pasta salad. Then for dessert we had vanilla cake, and brownies. It was all yummy!

Very nice I get some from a friend who raises them as close to wild as you can get.  They have a nice gamey taste and you need about 2 per person.  I make the glaze by boiling fresh orange juice and red wine and honey down until it is like a syrup.  I roast the grouse until its almost done and then apply the glaze and then finish them off.  Good grouse has a  nice gamey flavour to it.  I am not sure about farmed grouse though.  I have a friend who has an estate in Scotland and he shoots grouse which are really wild and gamey but you have to watch out for shot when you eat them.

Last night me and one of my best friends were wandering round town. We bought some chips and ate them with our fingers, first sat on the floor outside like tramps, and then sitting at the train stop, thinking of all the places we would like to go and would rather be than here. I had a slushie (strawberry and lemon & lime flavour), and we had cheesestrings. Then we each went and got a big chocolate milkshake and drank all that. :)

Had chips again with my friend. We had been wandering round town with two other of our best friends (Leticia: they were Harriet and Phoebe; and yes, I was with Nina again) and Nina (who eats loads and stays skinny just like me) said "I'm hungry." So I suggested we go for chips or a pizza, but Harriet and Phoebe refused to. Nina and I went off, got a milkshake and some chips (the pizza shop wasn't open) and sat and ate them. Then we went back to Nina's house. An hour later, Phoebe and Harriet come stumbling in (Nina and Phoebe are un-identical twins) and inform us of the lovely pizza they'd just had, because they had waited for the pizza shop to open. Nina and I were so angry we were throwing stuff at them for about two hours.

Tonight it's chicken with spices and olive oil, hummus, and pita bread.
I think we're having something else too, but am not positive about the specifics of the meal, as of now. It's some kind of middle-eastern chicken thing. My siblings and I are staying with our mom tonight and cooking dinner with her.
I'm excited about all this, but it's odd to be going to stay with my mom...my parents just split up :(
But I think it'll be a good night. And the food we make is always awesome. :D

Last night it was fish 'n' chips but tonight I'm not even bothering as we've had a row and it involves our eldest boy who doesn't live at home, but uses us to his advantage and I'm thoroughly sick of it so they can all fend for themselves the silly buggers!

Carlos or just Carlo? as for the age that's Lindelle's place to answer! You don't have to ask him! Though I'd go with somewhere in the 20's!

Well of course we want you to ask. Lol. You know me and Lindelle will just pester you. If it makes it easier you can use us (at least me) as an excuse just say your nosey friends want to know.

P.S. I love, love, LOVE chocolate.

I had a few meat pies in Australia.  I would call them gravy pies...very little meat.  Mostly watery sauce inside.  There are good pies but they cost a bit more.

The food in OZ is quite good overall.  I had the first milk, chocolate, coffee drinks in OZ ...very good.  They were illegal in California in 1980...now you can buy them.

Wow, shocking, I think that's the most fast food-ish I've ever registered from you, Mr. Everyday Gourmand!

BTW I see that in my absence this thread has not been so much about drooling about food as drooling about a Dr. Delicious!
Speaking of medicalities:
Lady N, I REALLY think you need some vitamins.
Even though your mother feeds you well, once the body has been sick, it takes a while to mend and sometimes a supplemement will help.
No, don't eat vitamines - it's unnatural and thus probably harmful! Do like me and eat a lot of mackerel/tuna (Omega3), red-currant (Vitamin C) and last but not least, for Vitamin C: choux suédois aka Swedish turnip: The Orange of the North, thus bursting with Vitamin C!

It's a bit of an inside joke between me and Lindelle. It started with me really. I was doing something around here, and it was so stupid that it was funny so I said I had, had a Blonde Moment. Then Lindelle said or a 'Lindelle moment' 'cause she does stuff like that all the time. So now when me or Lindelle do something really funny/stupid instead of saying we had a bolnde moment we just say Lindelle moment.

Tonight we had chicken and steak taco's with lime. Really yummy!

I spent some of the afternoon making the beef casserole recipe from: www.exclusivelyfood.com.au.  I have made this a few times and it's delicious!
I have never put the brandy in it.  That might make it a bit rich.

It's cold here and I think that this is the perfect winter recipe! The contrast between the beef and the chicken stock seems to improve it too.

"Tonight we are going to my parents for dinner.
Mum is doing a roast. Consists of lamb, baked potato, baked pumpkin, onion with all other vege's topped with mint sauce.
Dad's organising the dessert. "

I love lamb roasts, Lindelle.  Your post reminded me of the old TV advertisements in which a pretty, blonde girl says that she's been asked out by
Tom Cruise.  She refuses, and tells her family that she didn't want to miss her Mum's lamb roast!

I read through the recipe and I would keep it the same but you might want to use a better grade of steak in the recipe. I usually use sirloin in recipes like this.  I think the brandy or cognac is there to give the recipe a greater complexity of taste (a more complex palate).  If you are going to serve this to guests, try it before you do that and remember that recipes are usually guides.  Most good chefs use them as a guide only and bring in their own variations after they master the recipe.

Ramazan has finished on the 8th of September, yes, but my husband is a member of the Turkish community, a special one, they do pray in another way- küçük bayram, the festival in which we finish ramazan was not on the 8th for us, but on the 10th with the community and today is a special festival for women. So we do all prepare dinner and I ll serve something not typical. I m not of Turkish origin, but converted for my husband (he is a Sufi).

Hi Nadesha
It's funny you mention about this thread ending with 'tonight' as I didn't even consider other countries would have their main meal at lunch time.
There was another member here who says they eat a big lunch and not a lot for dinner at night also. So Nadesha, which country are you from?

I sometimes would rather a have a the main meal at lunch rather than at dinner, but then I would find it rather hard to make sure my family is eating the right foods as they are at work.
How do you moniter that, do they come home for lunch?
I find it very interesting.

Oh and by the way, I agree with you when you say you get tired of cooking for everyone. My hubby usually takes over one or two nights on a weekend too :)

Hello Lindelle,

At first, I have never heard the term "hubby" before- sounds very loving. :) But maybe my English is not well enough for those terms. But sounds cute in a way.

When I have been to Hong Kong about six years ago (unfortunately my girlfriend who lived there died last year in an accident), I wondered how people could eat dinner. But they had the strange habit of going out to eat everyday. I could not afford it everyday. And not with the whole family. To be true, MacDonalds or Burger King can be very stressy with four children (sigh)! Although if they are no toddlers anymore.
I m now living in Swiss, but actually of German- Russian origin (Deutsch-Russin) from Nowosibirsk.
I have four children and they do come home for lunch break, but the  return back to school again. My husband has his own business and pretends on having lunch at lunch time. And I do have to cook for my mother-in-law, too. She lives with us.
So as my son says lunch is the main course of the day here and dinner is only bread and so on.

>Oh and by the way, I agree with you when you say you get tired of cooking for everyone. My hubby usually takes over one or two nights on a weekend too Smiley

How do you call that in English? The different tastes are a real problem- one wants this and the other one dislikes it. sigh
My mother had to cook for nine persons everyday, so I wonder how she managed it without getting stressed.

Where are you from, Lindelle?

Olive Garden serves Italian food, Lindelle.  Sooo delicious!

I enjoy hearing where everyone is from and their eating habits.  Here in America, usually dinner (or supper) is the heavy meal of the day, although it is better to have lunch as the heavier meal.  My kids are teens now; if they don't like what I'm making for dinner they can just make their own food.  My son in particular is extremely picky, although it's not from a lack of trying on my part to get him to eat veggies.  So at his age, I figure he's old enough to know better so if he wants to eat junk, it's his problem.  My daughter on the other hand has never been picky--even when she was very young she was always willing to experiment with new foods and she loves salad in particular.  I too get tired of trying to figure out what to fix for dinner...sometimes we just scrounge from what's in the fridge!  My husband is a wonderful cook and he loves to bbq too, thank goodness!

Bonbon- I ve heard that you have those TV dinners at America or those prepared breakfast meals with pancakes, which you can just place in the microwave. Are those TV dinners good? Here we do have those meals, too, ready to be served, but they taste not very good normally, not like real made food, prepared fresh. We call those ones single meals.
My kids are not that picky, but they all have their favours. My eldest son is 18, my eldest daughter is 14, but they willl not make their food themselves- they are pretty spoiled, cause my mother-in-law has spoiled them from their childhood on- my other son, who is 12 does like to help me to cook and he likes to bake cakes. My youngest daughter is 3 years old now and she likes no vegetables and does not eat much fruits. It s a problem of the generations for my mother-in-law tells them all always that it s good to eat only what they want, cause when she was a little child there was not much food for everyone and so on...sigh. Sometimes she spoils them with sweets.
Here in Swiss we like to eat many sweet dishes for dinner, which you maybe only serve as desserts. :) Like fruitcake with vanilla sauce.

Nadeshda--there are lots of frozen meal choices here, and some of them are quite good, but too much of that isn't good as they usually load them with too much sodium and fat.  Fresh is best of course.  I can relate to what your mother in law said about not having much food when she was around--have you ever heard of John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath"?  It's about dirt poor people during the Depression in Oklahoma who travelled to California hoping for a better way of life.  That was exactly how it was for my father's family; they were also "Okies" and they limped out to California and they worked in the fields harvesting whatever was being harvested at the time to make money.  So I grew up with the "you eat what's on your plate" and so I wasn't picky.  Not like that for kids these days!

Post by: Lindelle on September 18, 2010, 10:44:18 PM
Nadesha, Bonbon's version is the same way I think about meal times.
I have 3 boys, 25, 21 and 18, but only the two younger ones live at home. IF they don't like something - bad luck - though they do draw the line at brussel sprouts. They eat EVERYTHING so I'm lucky there. Only, they don't like fish, every other kind of seafood is fine, but not fish, so I don't serve particular things they don't like. After all, they do have their own taste buds now and I can't make nor do I want to make them eat what they just don't like.

Frozen dinners as Bonbon said aren't that great. I prefer not to buy them.

Ah, they do love their icecream for dessert, after the main meal at night. We're not really big on other desserts here unless we have guests for dinner.

Pancakes here are made fresh from the batter, like a lot of things I serve up, but we do like the once a week takeout, or dinner out. On the weekends, the boys, well we don't see them, but they come home when they're hungry, I suspect they eat junk but who am I to monitor their cravings when they aren't here? LOL

Tonight is a family favourite, rissoles with gravy and vegetables.

Lindelle, Bonbon, thanks for your replies. It s interesting to talk with you.

I know the book by Steinbeck and I can imagine how hard life was in those days. When my mother-in-law grew up she lived in a part of Turkey and she belongs to a religious community which was not liked that much by the others. But her hunger came from the fact that they her parents had 15 children and the boys were the favourites, while girls did not get much food. And they had to work hard from childhood on. My Grannie grew up in Russia during WW I and that was maybe more like the depression in Oklahoma or something like that, compared to the fact that people starved because there was not enough food anymore. My Grannie had to go "stoppeln", that means to go to a field and put out potatoes of the ground, but secretly when she was child. And she had to keep buttons in her mouth to chew on them to make her think it was food and betray her body. Horrible. But if she talks about that it s for the kids today like miles away.

Lindelle, what are Brussel sprouts?

You can t always control the children if they do spend their money on junk food...sigh...we do have a small restaurant, maybe you would call it diner here, right next to the grammar school and they do have take away meals and did sell special ones for children when they were passing by on their way home. For some pocket money! So the children came home and were not hungry at all, but they lied about it and so on...

>Tonight is a family favourite, rissoles with gravy and vegetables.

What is rissoles? Gravy is the sauce I know- I like to watch Rachel Ray at the moment in the afternoons here on tv- she cooks very good meals very often. She is very popular in the USA I think.

Today my husband will serve us "Frikas", ground veal meatballs with dark gravy, potatoes and vegetables. My children love them. But they are not not flat nor round here, maybe something in the middle- they do look different from those meatballs in the UK or the USA.

It's so interesting hearing about foods in other countries!  Re: my dad and the Depression;  my granny, who was half native american (commonly known as american indian) would take weeds and cook them up.  Dad said sometimes they'd have gravy made with water and those weeds.  or just sometimes weeds.  Dandelion, lamb's quarter, dock, sorrel were some of the weeds they'd eat.  I've had them too, they're actually not bad.  You eat what you can when you have to...

Nadesha, rissoles are a larger version of your meatballs but made with mince instead of veal.

Brussel Sprouts are a round green vegetable that hasn't much taste to it, butter is always nice with it and not many people like them.

Tonight it's crumbed chicken and homemade chips. A quick and easy meal as all our three sons are here so dad can work on their cars!

That's ok though as I have my favourite programme on tv - 'Heartbeat' and I won't be disturbed.

Being Asian, we mostly eat rice and curried veg plus fish or meat for lunch but dinner is almost always pasta or roti (like pancakes). We also make different kinds of dinner varieties such as hoppers, a Sri Lankan specialty made with rice flour and coconut milk, sort of a thin pancake - it is eaten hot with curry and chillie sambol. An egg is also added which makes it delicious. There's also a string thin sort of a cake made of flour - known as stringhoppers, it too is delicious and eaten with curry and coconut sambol. There's also a rice flour and grated coconut variety steamed over a long thin bamboo shaped dome, called pittu. Most of our food is influenced by our Big Brother neighbour India - Indian food is also delicious and full of variety and flavour - so many kinds of rotis and so many varieties of rice. Oh, I am getting hungry although I usually eat a salad and yogurt for dinner.  Weekends are exceptions when the kids want to eat out, usually Chinese, Thai or Italian.

Today I've not eaten properly, but enjoyed several slices of delicious wheat bread with brown cheese (a Norwegian speciality no foreigners appreciate) and delicious rose hip jam.
Autumn really is the time for (dog) rose hips, you can also make a delicious soup from them. And they are very rich in vitamin C. And of course the dog rose (rosa canina, Шиповник собачий / роза собачья) is the native European rose, the original rose of romance and heraldry, of the Roman de la Rose and Wars of the Roses! Too bad people don't appreciate it more and plant more of it.

Tonight we had roast beef, potatoes, gravey, and corn. It was really good. Then just a little bit ago because I was hungry again I made myself some grilled cheese.

Tomorrow, lobster. just have not decided what to do with it yet.

To save the cost of transatlantic flights, here's how to do it.

Turn on oven to heat up to maximum temperature. While it's doing that, take two medium sized potatoes per person, and put into microwave. Time will vary according to number of potatoes, but 7-8 minutes for two (this cuts down the baking time). Then put potatoes into the hot oven for 30-40 mins, depending on how crisp you like the skins. Uncork the red wine to let it breathe.

For the garlic butter, bring the butter to room temperature, then put the garlic cloves through a garlic press, then mash them into the butter with a fork. Proportions work out at roughly 1 clove to 1oz of butter.

When the potatoes are cooked, take your frying pan, and heat up to maximum temperature. Pour yourself half a glass of wine.  Add a dribble of sunflower oil to the pan, then the steak, which needs to be cooked quickly.

You can add various other items to the dish - I usually have salad.

Enjoy!

That is pretty Deliah Smith, is it not Ann ?  I go extra with flaming the steak in  cognac. Then, make a red wine sauce with the pan drippings.
Jeremy Oliver comes in  with fresh veggies. My favourite is asparagus but anything available fresh is fine.
I actually do not cook much any longer, we eat out a  lot, but I took Julia Child lessons  so sound like a food snob.
I tend to cook French, my partner cooks Southern [US] I still make winter soups and stews though. A LOT of them.
You name it, I will make a soup out of it !

I got the method for the steak from a celebrity chef in one of the Sunday magazines, but I can't remember which one! It wasn't Delia Smith.

I have started  boiling the lobster shells for the basis  for my stock, but now what to do  with the  blessed animal's meat ? Something Asian, I imagine, would be nice and relatively easy.
Different from the usual treatment. Any ideas ?

I haven't decided yet - either kielbasa and saurkraut (with a baked potato for me since I can't abide saurkraut!) or pasta with chicken and alfredo sauce. My husband and younger son are at my mercy ... MMMWWWAAAAHHHHHHAAAAA!

kielbasa=polish sausage. It comes in one long casing and you slice it into chunks and cook it with the sauerkraut. I ended up serving the pasta alfredo last night and it got good reviews - there was enough left over for my husband's lunch today.

Cod, whole beans, fennel and pasta screws in an asparagus sauce here.
BTW do note that Russian got its word for cod, треска, from Norwegian torsk, through the Pomor trade, Поморская торговля. (The word for trade, торговля, derives from Nordic torg, marketplace.)

Hi,

4 of us were out last night to a Chinese restaurant, "The Peking Dragon" in Calgary - excellent food and lots of it...

Each ordered a platter:
1)  Sweet & Sour Soup
2)  Chicken Fried Rice
3)  Beef & Broccolli
4)  Creamed Prawns

I'm still stuffed.
