Ach! That portrait of Carlota is so cute! I don't know a thing about them--but Carlota's face looks so young in the painting, yet her clothing looks more adult, almost like a widow's cape.. any idea of her age?

The portrait is from 1844 so Charlotte was 4 years old.

her clothing looks more adult, almost like a widow's cape

She is wearing "la coiffe brabançonne", a black cloak over a white dress, a fashion that was popular in the French-speaking domain of Brabant, Belgium, during the XIX century.
The painting that Katenka posted is the original one, painted in Paris in 1844, and now in the Royal Collection of Belgium. The image was reproduced for royal relatives, and also circulated in other formats, as the one Rani posted.

I've always felt sorry for Maximilian.  He was basically a pawn of Napoleon III, who was trying to sneak a new French colony into North America.  NIII was doing an end run around the Monroe Doctrine (which President James Monroe of the U.S. enacted decades before, it basically told Europe to stay out the America's, the existing colonies, such as Canada, would be left alone, but no new ones allowed). However, at this time, the U.S. was in the middle of the Civil War, and could not enforce said Doctrine.  NIII wanted to turn Mexico into a de facto French colony with Maximilian as his puppet.  Of course, poor old Max was dumb enough to go along.  Had he told NIII to sod off, he might have enjoyed a ripe old age.

....NIII wanted to turn Mexico into a de facto French colony with Maximilian as his puppet.  Of course, poor old Max was dumb enough to go along.  Had he told NIII to sod off, he might have enjoyed a ripe old age.

He was quite naive I must say, he believed when the members of the Mexican Conservative Party showed him the false signatures that they got as request of Maximilian himself when he wanted to know if mexicans really wanted that he would rule them. But really he wasn't the main interested at the colonial adventure at Mexico but his wife Charlotte, she was the one who encouraged him more. I think that if she wasn't there Maximilian would not have accepted the offering of NIII.
I feel much sorrow also for the Empress, she  got what she wanted, she's still remembered by mexicans today but how high prize she had to pay for this!!!, 60 years of madness and the death of her husband.

...However, at this time, the U.S. was in the middle of the Civil War, and could not enforce said Doctrine...

There's no doubt, americans wouldn't have accepted that other nation would be taking the control of Latin America. That's why they offered their support to President Juárez at the end of the Civil war to make the French to leave Mexico, of course, the French-Prussian war was another reason that contributed to the fall of the Second Empire at Mexico.

Title: Photographs of Emperor Maximilian of Mexico
Post by: Lecen on October 06, 2011, 12:39:59 AM
Hi! I have a few questions about photographs of Emperor Maximilian of Mexico:

1) Are there photographs of him in the 1840s and early 1850s?
2) Is there any book with good photos of Maximilian?

Thank you all!

I haven't seen none, only some paintings and drawings showing him in early age, the first photos that I've seen of him are of the late 1850's (like the one when he is portrayed with his brand-new wife Charlotte) I haven't seen none even of his brother Franz Joseph (who was more possible to being photographed at becoming Emperor after 1848) but only the same, paintings and drawings of him on his early years (even as Emperor). I doubt that there are... or perhaps some unknown ones :-?

Odd. There certainly is photos of him in the late 1840s and 1850s but is quite probably that historians were lazy and didn't look after well enough. His Brazilian first cousin, Emperor Pedro II, has photos from the later 1840s as you can see in his article on Wikipedia.

Does anyone has the book "Ein Kaiser unterwegs"?

Lastly, is there any book about Maximilian with this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Emperor_maximilian_of_mexico.jpg  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Emperor_maximilian_of_mexico.jpg)) photo ?

I recently read about a rumour that Charlotte could have been pregnant when she returned to Europe and gave birth while at Miramar.  Does anyone know anything about this?
Title: Re: Emperor Maximilian of Mexico & Empress Carlota (Charlotte of Belgium) ,Part II
Post by: Yelena Aleksandrovna on November 26, 2012, 03:14:34 PM
The only rumour that I know is that many say that Charlotte is in fact the mother of Maxime Weygand and gave birth to him in Belgium -although there is another alleged mother, a Polish woman-. According with this story his father was a Belgian officer (Alfred van der Smissen) who had an affair with Charlotte, and she was "sent" to Europe (1866) to give birth in secret for avoiding a scandal. Honestly I don't believe in these stories... I do believe she went to Europe for asking for help to their Empire -her life and Maximilian's were in risk-, French anounced they would leave Mexico and anything would convince them to change. Both knew they needed the French army to keep their throne safe.

I don't think that she was pregnant while she stayed at Miramare, I don't believe that she would dare to visit Napoleon III and his wife in that situation -and considering the time, her pregnancy wold be very advanced and would not be easy for the Empress that other people don't notice it-. She would be trying to hide her inconvenient secret, and many people in France would have seen her.
