Title: Grand Duchess Elizaveta - discussion and pictures PART IV

Part IV.

Starting this Part IV with an interesting fact.

Grand Duchess Elizaveta was on friendly terms with Crownprincess Stephanie, widow of Crownprince Rudolf of Austria.
In 1897 Stephanie visited Russia and GDss was entertaining her during some days. GD Sergei in his diary says that Stephanie was a childhood friend of Ella.
Wonder if some photos exist from that visit...

Interesting indeed. I didn't know she was close to someone from the Austrian court. Now I'm wondering if she ever got to meet the Empress Elisabeth. I read somewhere that during those times they were considered by contemporaries to be the most beautiful women in Europe.

I wonder if Alice was on good terms with Leopold II or perhaps Ludwig was? Alice would have been cousins with Leopold through the Coburg side and Victoria retained a close relationship with that branch. So it could make sense that Stephanie and her siblings would visit.

Another place they could have met is the sea side resorts that Alice took their children to, Queen Marie Heneritte also likes to visit those places or spas (God knows she needs it living with Leopold II). Ella & Stephanie could have met during these holidays. I personally do not think Stephanie was a beauty, she did grew more attractive years after her marriage though.

I think she never met Empress Elisabeth, at least I've never came across any mention of it in the sources. But GDss did meet Emperor Franz Josef, in 1897 year, when he came with a state visit to Russia. Elizaveta didn't want to take part in the 3 days festivities in St.Petersbourg and tried to decline from it but her sister the Empress was adamant on the point of Ella's taking part and so GDss went to entertain the old Emperor.

I think Ella would have been more interested had Sisi been there. BTW Alicky did met Sisi in Vienna once and the verdict was that Sisi still had the magic to put the younger woman in the shade. A Sisi/Ella meeting would have been interesting.

Stephanie also met with the GDss in 1895 in Franzensbad, and according to GD Sergei she was very impatient to see Elizaveta.

Hard to see what they could have talked. Too bad the correspondence was lost.It would be interesting to see what they have in common (apart from their intertests in clothes & jewels).

In an early letter Ella says that she has got the impression that Stephanie was extremely bored in her new married life and that she had nothing to do or expect...
Stephanie seems to have been very eager to see Ella in those days.

Really ? Were the correspondence published ? It would be interesting to know...Especially since Ella had much better PR in Russia than Stephanie in Austria.

Ugly? I think it is a very pretty statue - the features are quite alike. Of course that sort of "cul de Paris" COULD have been more decently modelled...

seems to be a running trait in royalty, there are many talented artists. was ella the only one who could draw well out of her siblings?  alice was a talented artist, i was watching the antiques roadshow (as i often do incase something to do with royalty pops up...i'm just that cool :)   ) , and a woman came along with dresses of alice and...helena i think...but there were also some wonderful sketches that alice had done, so did alice pass this talent on to any of her other children?

also, did ella still paint etc, as much after sergei's death, i don't see any reason why she shouldn't, but most of her art etc i've seen seems to be dated earlier.

Princess Victoria too was a very gifted painter - the children were taught by H.R.Kröh (1845 - 1945) one of the Hessian court painters.
Ernst Ludwig and Alix used to draw as well but I think they were not far as talented as their elder sisters.
I have never seen any drawings by Pcss Irene.

I think it all came from the Prince Consort - an outstanding painter even at the earliest age

interesting. yes, i'd agree with your theory of it all coming from the prince consort. it would be interesting to see if irene did paint/draw etc. and her art is just rarer, or if she never/or couldn't draw?
anyone know?

When the  diphteria broke out in her family Ella was he only one of the children that did not get. She was sent to her grandmother Princess Elizabeth of Hesse, the mother of her father. I think she stayed there until after the death and burial of her mother.

If speaking exactly - Ella was moved to her granfather's house on the Wilhelminenstrasse November 13 (Viktoria fell ill November 7th). She returned home December 15.

Today I ran across this photo on eBay. The seller has it posted as Alix! I wrote them and they answered   It's Alix. Yes, she  looks like Ella .
But  it's Ella imo
Title: Re: Grand Duchess Elizaveta - discussion and pictures PART IV

IMHO is Ella, no doubts.
Alix was thinner, or better more slender, i'd say; moreover, i've already seen this gown on Ella, but never on Alix; finally, her face is definitively Ella's, not Alix's; i'd post some photo to comparison, but i don't have time now (my parents in law are waiting for me for lunch  :o)
I'd say the have their own interests to say it's Alix: a photo of Alix's would attract more customers, 'cause she was in a certain way more famous; and those who aren't expert, and can't recognize them - they're not passionate as we are! - maybe just want to own an important photo... i hope i could explain myself ^^
But, in conclusion IMHO is Ella.

The question is not that difficult if one looks at the dress. That's 1880-1882 years fashion. Alix was a little girl then, that's all.

Hi Katenka,

It's possible that the seller just wants it to be Alexandra, as she would be better known to the population at large.
Not many people generally know who Elisabeth was, except us, and a very few others;  and at least more know Alexandra because she was an Empress and was murdered.

Just my guess!!

Well, it's possible that the user wants her to be Alix, even if we show all the proofs availables in the world to demonstrate she isn't.

But even if Ella was not an Empress, she was murdered too, like her sister, so she shares her part of tragic history too.

Hi Sunny,

Yes, I know and you know that Ella was murdered too (along with many others) but:
most of the general public does not know that nor even who Ella was.
That was my point.

A lot of people know about Alexandra and she was an Empress;  more people are interested in an Empress than a Grand Duchess.  Just as most are intersted in Queen Marie Antoinette being executed and not many know about the others.

Title: A little girl called "Ella"- intriguing! :)
Post by: Nadeshda74 on May 14, 2011, 10:07:56 AM
Well, first of all maybe you will call me crazy and say "Nadeshda, just wants to come up with something great!", but I do not want to make myself important, cause when I noticed this with my mum and Grandmother we were pretty astonished.
See his link here:
http://www.jcosmas.com/cdvs2.html

The first CDV is titled "Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and by Rhine", known as "Ella". It is sold now. But this girl not Ella. Her name was actually Rachel Kisch, her father was selling fabrics, like silk, fine fabrics and the family was of Jewish origine, mainly having their residence in Czechoslovakia, Prague, but they had relatives in Hamburg and Darmstadt. Rachel was the youngest of five children, and wa sent to the relatives at Darmstadt for a while, after her mother started to suffer from a muscle disease- I do not know the English term for it, but people die of it. Rachel was the baby of the family, her sibling were older than her. The photo shows her in 1875- special about her was her blonde hair, as it was a saying in the family "Who did place the blonde baby in the storch`s nest?" to her mother, when they saw Rachel- (in Germany parents tell their little children that babys are brought by a storch or they do grow in cabbages! :) ). Why do I know? Because my Grandmother is a niece of the famous German author Egon Erwin Kisch and we have done much family research when they wanted to close the Egon Erwin Kisch- House in East Berlin in (if I remember it right) 1992. My mother and I have been there and decided to find more about the family tree/part, as my Grandmother does not imagine so much about her uncle, who visited the family very often. But we could find something about Rachel in the family books, documents. And the same photo like shown on this webpage.
So I wonder now who did mix it up with Ella and who is the poor one who bought it. It s a nice collectors piece if you collect something about Kischs family- but it s not Ella.
I ve tried to contact the administrator of the webpage, but he does not reply to my emails.

Hope you do not think that I would be the one with the raised finger here, but it s just funny to find that photo- Rachel would have been thankful to have been  a Royal person! :)

Once again these are reproductions and they are protected by copyright from the seller hence the low starting bidding price.

Thats the reason? i see this seller is also selling images that you can buy copies at the ONB bigger and cheaper. Anyway, i will send links to the forum adm to delete at least the ones i ve posted.

Title: Re: Grand Duchess Elizaveta - discussion and pictures PART IV
Post by: grandduchessella on June 16, 2011, 10:52:11 AM
The seller owns the copyright to the negative--at least that what they are claiming. So he/she owns the copyright to the images as they are reproduced on ebay. They are the seller that is none too happy about the images being on here--drives down the price.

Also, providing links to ebay is a no-go. The rules state that there is to be no commercial advertising. It can be mentioned and people can look (and save) the photos if they like. If any of the purchasers would like to post the prints they buy, that is up to them.
Title: Re: Grand Duchess Elizaveta - discussion and pictures PART IV

Yes. Although once people download the images, they could also sell them. There lies the difficulty.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand well what you all say =S
Please if I can't post these images because they only own to the seller tell me and I won't do it again.
I tried to inform about this, and someone told me that any image, since it is on the internet and anybody can see and preserve it, doesn't own to the owner anymore. I though that, as almost every forum member posts photos from ebay there wasn't any problem with that, I didn't know anything =(
Title: Re: Grand Duchess Elizaveta - discussion and pictures PART IV
Post by: Eric_Lowe on June 16, 2011, 12:09:47 PM
Well...people cannot stop you from downloading, but they can delete your post if you post it on here. Especially since the seller is here on this thread.
Title: Re: Grand Duchess Elizaveta - discussion and pictures PART IV

Don't beat yourself up over it. It's not that big a deal and usually passes unnoticed. That's why attention usually isn't brought about.

It is NOT true that anything on the internet is fair game. A lot of what is on the internet is copyrighted. Some people (like Diana Mandache) watermark everything they put on their blogs, archives like the Hesse and others do the same. Some images are in the public domain--usually those before 1935 (?). (I think it's 75 years.) However, when one knows who the specific item belongs to (in this case an ebay seller), those images belong to him/her. It's up to them to make a fuss or not. Copyright is often hard to determine--especially with older items and when they are out on the internet. However, many items are only on the internet because someone broke copyright in the first place. It's part of the reason that you see so many items marked on here. That at least preserves the image somewhat from being passed all around. Eric is right--unless the activate the activa (one example) program that prevents downloading, they are usually able to be saved. Some people prevent that on ebay and other sites though.

Anyway, like mentioned on the other thread, I would look up the thread on copyright. There is some really good information there, esp by Marlene who is pretty much an expert as well as being a librarian and published author.
Title: Re: Grand Duchess Elizaveta - discussion and pictures PART IV
Post by: Forum Admin on June 16, 2011, 12:59:16 PM
It isn't the end of the world, but I do have an obligation when the owner of an image asserts copyright protection to respond and take down the images.  As said, just because it floats out there on the internet does not mean it is free to grab and use whenever or wherever you want.

Title: Re: Grand Duchess Elizaveta - discussion and pictures PART IV
Post by: Eric_Lowe on June 16, 2011, 01:02:22 PM
Exactly. To put it on this site make someone feel like adding insult to injury. Marlene is very strict on copyrights. So it is better not to copy things from Ebay I think.
Title: Re: Grand Duchess Elizaveta - discussion and pictures PART IV
Post by: grandduchessella on June 16, 2011, 01:03:34 PM

It looks like a cabinet card. Birgitte used to have it on her worldroots site (until she took the whole site down because, despite her requests on her main page not to reproduce the pictures were spread all over--this was a couple years ago). You can see more from the sitting if you go to the National Portrait Gallery website. There were multiple sittings done of Elizabeth and her sisters. This is a cropped in version of one of them.

I think Maria F. never visited Ilinskoe during her husband's reign. Alexander III was in Ilinskoe  only once (August 1888). But the Imperial Family visited Moscow 2 or 3 times (1893 year for sure - it was 10th jubilee of Alexander's coronation).

I think that proves that Minny's relationship was not particular warm. Since Ilinskoe was the constant meeting place of Ella's family (including Irene, Victoria & Alix). As for Oakhill (is it still stands today ?), the picture stands as a testament to Maria's love/hate relationship with Ella.

Thanks for the information. I guess Prince Lennart did not get it.

From the thread on Oak Hill:

That´s the place! I had to refresh my memory and consult my litterature...
Prince Wilhelm (brother to Gustav Adolf, king 1950-73, who was married to 1. Margaret of Connaught and 2. Louise Mountbatten) was more or less forced into marriage with Maria Pavlovna in 1908. First they lived at the somewhat gloomy Royal Palace in Stockholm, but a considerable gift from aunt Ella made it possible for the young couple to build their own home on a rocky piece of land on the Royal Djurgarden, a picturesque city centre island used for recreation, museums and elegant villas. The architect of the day, Ferdinand Boberg designed a large stuccoed villa in his characteristic style - mediterranenan elegance combined with art nouveau ornaments. Father Peter Rumjantsev, head of the Orthodox church in Stockholm, held an opening ceremony on April 1, 1910.
Maria Pavlovna used to slide down the stairs on a silver tray, which chocked the stuffy old courtiers, but they let "the dear little child" do it anyway... The marriage was never happy, and in 1914 W and MP were divorced. Oakhill was sublet to the US consul in the 1920´s, and around 1930 (forgot the exact year) Wilhelm sold it to the Italian government.

We discussed this question many times I think. MF was outraged with GD Sergei's and Ella role in the relationship of Nicholas and Alix. The Empress hated when someone meddled in her family affairs - she was a possessive mother and considered her children her own property and didn't need mediators. That's why her relationship with Elizaveta became more cool after 1893 year.

Yes. But MF did get along with Ella even when the relationship went cool. She had more problems with Miechen (Grand Duchess Vladimir) and Alicky (Empress Alexandra) than Ella.

At first I thought that was just the close up of a well known one but I see that the position of her face is a bit different. Is this the full verssion or is there one that shows her full body? I didn't know that there were more photos of this session.

I am in search of a picture of Ella when she was sixteen...preferably at her coming-out ball, but I have a feeling no pictures exist of that occasion. So, any pictures of Ella at the age of 16...I believe the year would have been 1880...the sooner the better! much appreciated!

I haven't seen an image from her ball but I think pictures from that age exist in the royal collections of the UK and the Darmstadt archives. They are both searchable.
Title: Ella's Reserved Court Dress Color?
Post by: mclisa on December 11, 2012, 04:29:06 PM
Does anyone know what Ella's reserved color was for court dresses? I know Marie Pavlovna's (senior) was burnt orange, and Mavra's was matte yellow.  I'd love to know Ella's as well.

Thanks.

Marie of Romania wrote in 'The story of my life' that  she saw Aunt Ella wearing a court dress which was "a colour which is neither blue nor green, the colour of glaciers or of aquamarines." I don't know if this was Ella's reserved colour (as the imperial women seemed to wear different colours apart from their special ones, with the exception of the Empresses', the court ladies', or other designated colours) but it would seem to go well with her ethereal beauty (and she had an aquamarine parure as I recall, very handy!).

Yes. I think she wore it for a portrait too. It was among some of the pieces that she returned to her brother Ernie following Serge's death.

I don't think she had a reserved color. For example, there was her portrait in a pink court dress (it was owned by her husband).

I think it could stem from a fancy dress ball look and got painted. How Dimitri got the painting out of Russia is another story...It confirms that Dimitri did adored his Aunt Ella, unlike his sister Mare Paulovna the younger.

That's January 1894 year, ball-party at the Werigins (friends of the Grand Ducal pair). Grand Duke Sergei mentioned that ball and his wife's dress in his letter to his brother Pavel.

Well, Eric, maybe the artist added details to the portrait and was inspired in that image. Artist adding extra details to portraits inspired in certain images are not rare. Take for example this image of Alexandra Iosifovna and kids

I think that portrait was not based upon a photo. Ella who loved clothes could have had that dressed especially designed and made for that sitting. In that way, she was an artist too.
Title: Re: Grand Duchess Elizaveta - discussion and pictures PART IV
Post by: Carolath Habsburg on April 20, 2013, 07:23:27 AM
Maybe Ella wasnt able to pose. That s another reason why the  artist  coild paint a portrait based in a photo.

BTW we dont even know in which year this portrait was made. What if it was painted in the period when Ella was a nun  or even when she was dead?
Title: Re: Grand Duchess Elizaveta - discussion and pictures PART IV
Post by: Eric_Lowe on April 20, 2013, 07:36:36 AM
I think most likely it was painted before she became a nun. Dimitri who knew her at the height of her beauty and the time when she was still interested in clothes and party. After she became a nun, it would not fit her new station as abbess to pose for paintings.

Well, after looking into the GD Sergei's diary I think the portrait is by Flamenq (or a copy after him) painted in summer 1894. GD Sergei wrote down that Flamenq came to Ilinskoe for Ella's portrait: she would be in the portrait in a dress a la empire (just in January 1894 her empire dress had a great success, see the photo posted above in a few posts before).

It is a breathtaking portrait Ally Kumari. It was posted in a German site a few weeks ago where it was a part of an exhibition at the Schlossmuseum in Darmstadt about the Darmstadt princesses who married into the Romanov family. There were also other portraits of Ella by Kaulbach as well as of Alix that weren't posted in full color or quality before. I hope someone here in the forum was able to get the book for the exhibition. There were lots of portraits there according to the website! :-)

That portrait is so beautiful! It's interesting to hear that there are still paintings by Kaulbach that haven't been posted online.

Grand Duchess Elizaveta and Grand DUke Konstantin Konstantinovich, 1911

Dear Ally:

I was browsing through this thread and ran accross this picture you posted of GD Elizaveta Feodorvna with GD Konstantin Konstantinovich from 1911. I was wondering whether you know the identity of the man standing in the background between them. He looks like my Great Grandfather P.A. Basilevsky who was an aide de camp to GD Sergei and later became marshall of the nobility for Moscow. I have a lovely silver box which was a present from GD Elizaveta Feodorvna that was given to him for his service running her Sklad during WWI.

Here is his Wikipedia page:

I do not know the identity of the man, but you are right he looks strikingly similar to Basilevksy! I dare say it is him! And how wonderful for you to have such a link to history. And to have something that actually was given by the Grand Duchess... that is a real treasure indeed!

None that I recall. The description of the photo was merely "GD Elizabeth of Russia". Sorry.

there is no identification. Actually they are officers of the Preobrazhenskiy regiment, not Grand Duke's stuff members. I can identify some of them if you need.

I would like to know the identity of the person sitting in front with the black pointed beard. My Great Grandfather Peter Alexandrovich Basilevsky was an aide de camp to GD Sergei when he was Governor of Moscow and this gentleman resembles him. Thanks.

Yes, that man does resemble P.A. Basilevsky but he never was an officer of the Preobrazhenskiy regiment but the Hussar regiment as I remember and he retired long before the years in the picture (end of 1890s).

Poor Ernst being the odd man out. How awkward that must have been even if they probably didn't speak of it.

About Ella and Wilhelm II - has anyone seen any letters she wrote about him?? Everyone seems to say that she did not return his feelings at all - but have we seen anything FROM her?

Also, are there any letters of any kind known between them - after all, they are cousins and probably wrote sometime.

Dearest Willy,
Thank you for your dear letter and the book and flower. I hope your leg is better. The little bird is very pretty. I hope we will see you and Harry soon again. We are all very well. Mama and Papa and Sisters all send their love and many kisses XXX
Your very loving cousin, Ella

Dearest Willy,
Thank you for the book I just received. I was sorry you had stopped just at that spot and wished for you to go on. I shall read it myself now and enjoy it very much. But did Harry get to hear it? It was Grandmama’s present for him, I shall send it back if he has not tho I do not like to have to do so.

I send you what I was painting – tho’ it is not half so good and pretty as I should have liked. My foot is much better and I was up a little today. Mama says Grosmama is much better.

In three weeks it will be 3 years since – you remember in April 75?
Your very loving cousin, Ella

April 7 1878
Darling Willy,
I found what you left in the book and it is so sweet – I must write to you tho I do not have much to say and we only said good-bye two hours ago. Yes in 73 is when – I don’t know if I should write it here –I shall just say that I would be able to say the same as you did in your note, as much as a child could, since I was only 8 then. I think of Hothouse – of M 9th & of the 5th & the 5th 3 years ago – when you first said something and the first
