Title: 30 Day Romanov Challenge
Post by: clockworkgirl21 on May 17, 2013, 11:47:50 PM
I'm sure many people have seen this on Tumblr, but I think it would be fun to do here as well. We're a bit behind Tumblr now, but that's okay.

Day 1: Favourite Grand Duchess or Princess

My answer is Olga Nicholaievna. She seems to have been the most complex one.

I hate having to choose between OTMA...and since all four of them would qualify as my favorite (like a four way tie) I'll go with one of their Grand Duchess relatives.

Olga Alexandrovna is my pick.

Mine would be Maria Nikolaevna (Mashenka!!) because I could say we have a lot of similarities, IMO.

Tatiana is mine, of course.

Does it have to be an OTMA grand duchess?  If so, my favorite is Olga, but if it can be any grand duchess or princess, my pick is Grand Duchess Alexandra Nikolaevna.

Day 2: Favorite residence.

Livadia. Who wouldn't love a Crimean getaway?

Lisa, can I say Livadia too?
Title: Re: 30 Day Romanov Challenge

Either Livadia or Alexander Palace certainly. But I too will have to say the palace in Crimea!

Alexander Palace because they stayed there longer than in Livadia, and I terribly want to go there someday :'(

D.1: Favourite Grand Duchess-Olga. Very interesting character indeed!

D.2: Favourite residence-tough one!! I'll probably go for Alexander Palace I'd love to go there one day.

Day 2: Going to go with Livadia.

Day 3 : Favorite Tiara/Jewelry.

I guess I'll have to go with the headdresses that went with the court dresses. I can't remember the real name, but it's one of these:

You said exactly what I was thinking! I don't know much about jewelry, even though I did see the jewels in person back in '98! Just know that they always looked lovely in whatever they were wearing. I'll go with the Faberge eggs too if that's allowed...and specifically the one presented by Carl Fabergť to the Tsar in celebration of the Romanov tercentenary in 1913...

Beautiful and brilliant; http://expertdiamant.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/the-romanov-tercentenary-egg_ou-faberge.jpg

Am I too late?

1) Favorite Grand Duchess  -- Olga Nicholaievna Romanova.
2) Favorite estate -- Any place they stayed while at the Crimea Peninsula, of course. Fresh air, excellent climate, and the Black Sea. :-D Finland skerries are not that bad, of course.
3) Favorite Tiara -- the one Empress Alexandra wore during 1911 photo-shoot.

Day 3:  My favorite tiara is of Romanov origin, but it now belongs to the Hesse family.  It's made from diamond ears of wheat that were on one of the gowns in Grand Duchess Alexandra Nikolaevna's trousseau; she married Prince Friedrich-Wilhelm of Hesse-Kassel in 1844 , but died only six months after her wedding, and most of her jewels remained in Russia.  Sometime in the early 1900s, her husband's second wife, Princess Anna of Prussia, had the ears of wheat from her gown into the tiara, which is now the family's traditional wedding tiara.  Just a bit of history for anyone unfamiliar with the story :)

Day 6: Favorite dress or outfit.

This is a difficult one! They had so many gorgeous dresses, especially the regiment dresses, but I'll have to go with OTMA's war clothes. Simpler clothes suited them so well. They were pretty enough that they didn't need fancy clothes.  :P

Day 5: Pet -- Has to be Jemmy who made Anastasia very happy when it came, and very sad when it died.

Day 6: Indeed, Lisa, it's difficult to choose which clothes are the best!
But I made up my mind...  Most of their clothes on 1910-1914 are my favorites...Like those they wore in their profile photos in 1914.

Day 6.- I adore the gowns that OTMA used in their formal photos of 1913, 1914 and 1916, honestly I can't decide among any of them. I also love the Big Pair's court dresses used in 1913. Well, I pick the fashion they wore from 1913 to 1916.

Catching up here....

Day Four :  GD Ernst Ludwig , "Uncle Ernie", is urched out by his adorable daughter Princess Elisabeth.

Day Five :  The goofy, big-eared Joy

Day Six:  The dresses worn by the little GDs , OTMA, in those photos in roughly 1902-3, in which they were seated on a little bench in front of a tree, and wearing big bonnets. I can't believe I'm answering this, but what the hey ;D Going with the flow.

I'm with Jen.

If the Crimea counts then I'll go with that again. If we are talking more a straight up vacation spot then I'll say Finland.

I compare Finland to a vacation destination, like going to Key West. Whereas the Crimea was more like a time share, like Miami for retired snow birds a few months out of the year. I don't think of them along the same lines.

Some of the entries on tumblr are absolutely exquisite and I urge you if you haven't already seen them to go and check it out, you can search them by the tag #30-day-romanov-challenge (you don't need to have an account to do this).  :)

I'm not sure either. I'd say Alexander II, but we need further back. The only ones I know anything substantial about are Peter, Catherine II, and Ivan the Terrible. Not gonna go with Ivan. lol Peter and Catherine both did great things for Russia. I like how Peter learned shipbuilding from the Dutch...so I'll go with Peter. Catherine runs a close second.

Day 10: Favorite past Romanov. I think that this must be between Peter the Great (for the same reason mentioned by Clockwork girl) and also AII (the emancipation of serfs). I feel much interest also for Catherine the Great but she's not my fave.

Day 11: My favorite Emperor is Alexander II (I admire him as Emperor but don't like his personal life), I don't have a real favorite Empress, I'm interested in all the empresses of the 19th century. Perhaps Elizaveta Alexeievna (she was a great and tragic beauty) or Empress Marie Feodorovna -Dagmar of Denmark- (she did a good role as consort empress, IMO).

Day 13: I also choose Alexei and Ileana, I think that they would have made a beautiful couple.

It's interesting to compare Olga & Voronov's "relationship" with that of Alexei and Princess Ilena.

On one hand Alexei and Ilena could have theoretically been a couple, both being royals and having familial ties. Olga, so long as she was a Grand Duchess at least, could never have married an officer. And of course Voronov later married making it a rather moot point anyway.

But I guess I just find Olga's relationship with Voronov more romantic. First off it was obviously much more developed, far as we know, than any feelings Alexei expressed towards a female. Then also I find it easier to identify with as a commoner myself several years Olga's senior. I can see how an officer gentleman could fall for a beautiful GD and think it's incredibly sweet that her heart wore no titles when it came to love and attraction.

Hmmm, tough call between Olga A and Nicholas II.

I like both of their personalities and consider them both very good people. Nicholas was a failed Tsar, but Olga never had anything remotely near that level of responsibility.

To me, Konstantin Nikolaevich was the most interesting and admirable of Nicholas's children. Without his support, the rather impressionable and depressive Alexander would have been unable to achieve much at all.

What do people find interesting about Alexandra, who died at 19? I am not sure I could even describe her personality, beyond the rather stereotyped things her bereaved family recalled of her. But it's a genuine question...

Well, it's brilliant material for a story, with all its elements of romance and tragedy.  That's probably what attracts us to Alexandra.  I have done some pretty extensive research on her, and I can say she was a gentle, sweet-natured girl who was very well-loved by all who knew her.  You are right--she died so young that history has largely forgotten about her, which is sad in itself.

I have read your article on Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, by the way, and it was a very well-written piece.

Yet, Robert Massie is considered a great, credentialled historian. Ha. His Nickolas and Alexandra was about adoration, not absolutes. Very much like his later work, "Dreadnought".

That said, I thought the film was great as a movie and indicator of lifestyle/personalities.

The costumes and casting were both excellent. Janet Suzman was top notch in her role as Alexandra and I thought Michael Jayson did well as Nicholas. The supporting actors were very good also...not the least of which Sir Laurence Olivier's portrayal of Count Sergei Witte. Tom Baker was good as Rasputin too although it's hard to top Alan Rickman's performance.

It was a good introductory film managing to pack a lot in its three hours. All in all I'd say it's 69% "Rotten Tomatoes" and 7.1 rating on IMDB are pretty accurate. A good not great movie with too many historical flaws to merit repeated viewing.

I think it would be fun to do a little 'History vs Hollywood' with the AP crowd for a film such as this. Gather a small group in person and pause to discuss after each scene the historical inaccuracies of what was just depicted on screen. Too bad most of us are so spread around the world. I guess we could try it in a thread. Similar to JamesPratt's excellent book 'Errata'.

No one that even disgusts you Nena? How about just someone you don't care for?

How about that backstabbing traitor, Kiril.

I agree with Tim on this! Honestly much of the Vladimirovich wing of the family makes me want to side of the revolutionaries, lol.

I'm also in agreement with others that there is much to dislike about Serge Alexandrovich.

So much to postÖ
Day 8: (Favorite formal photo) That 1914 photo where all of them are looking through an album. It gives a sweet feeling of reminiscence. How I long to have a hold of that photo album, too!
Day 9: (Favourite Alexeiís photo) Thereís a picture of Alexei with his dog Joy sitting on grass, and it was posted before by TatianaZÖ a big screencap from GD Olga Nikolaevnaís photo album online ~
Day 10: (Favorite past Romanov) Itís Adini~! Plus, reading that Dru is doing a thesis about her makes me wish that she could finally publish that as a book someday because those she knows definitely arenít yet common knowledge! I hope all the best for you, Dru ^^
Oh my dear, I wish my university also lets students do thesis like yours! I could have enjoyed my whole thesis life had that been the case here~
Day 11: (Favorite Emperor/Empress) I love Empress Alix! Belated happy 141st birthday to her!
Day 12: (Favorite 1903 Winter Palace Costume Ball Outfit) I only know Empress Alixís so thatís my pick.
Day 13: (Romanovs you ship together) Alexei and Princess Astrid of Sweden who later became Queen of the Belgians!
Day 14: (Favorite child of Alexander III) Nicholas II. Despite some imperfections (halo, noneís perfect), heís one of the most ideal husbands Iíve known throughout Earthís history.
Day 15: (Favorite Child of Tsar Nicholas I) Adini again. Like what Dru said about her ; )
Day 16: (Best Alexandra photograph) Itís not really a solo photo of Alix but thereís this one taken of her, her sister Irene, QV & Prince Eddy in Balmoral (1881) where she was smiling sweetly. Her happiness comes out from her eyes on that photo!
Day 17: (Favorite Romanov movie) None. I havenít watched oneÖ
Day 18: (Favorite staff member) Pierre Gilliard. I love how he loves his students. I assume he also has albums with tones of pictures of them, but unfortunately they are in the hiding.
Day 19: (Favourite Mode of Transport) Standart, too!
Day 20: (Favourite Royal Relative) Hahaha, same with my dearie Yelena :: Aunt Alix, the Queen of King Edward VII : )
Day 21: (Romanov you loathe) The Vladimirovich branch, indeed!
Day 22: (Favourite ancestor of NAOTMAA) Yes, Peter the Great. So many things took a new turn in his time.
PS. Yelena~!! Very lovely avatar of Mashka!

Hi Grand Princess Shandroise!  Believe it or not, my goal really is to publish that book!  I'm working on my MFA in creative writing, and I have to write a book-length manuscript--I've spent years researching for this project, and I've had to translate most of my materials from German and Russian.  Most of my sources are pretty obscure, since Adini's story is not very well-known.  I hope you and others here on the Forum would like to read it, if I am fortunate enough to get it published one of these days :)

Day 23:  I'm going to pick Romanov Autumn as well, if only because it covers more than Nicholas II and his family.

I decided to get involved: Palace Spala because I like to hunt, TN was hot looking babe, Cyril and Boris Vlad are a couple of cowards ect.
I have information on both ONs and TN charities posted on their sections. The Tatiana Committee was set up by her mother Alexandra shortly after the start of the war. It continued to operate for awhile after Nicholas abdicated. The Bolos set up their own organization to take care of refugees with no reference to TN.

The Lost Crown, of course! Sarushka writes the best find of fanfiction. It's fiction, but not outside the realm of possibility. You don't read it and say to yourself, "That wouldn't have happened in a million years."
