Title: Winter Palace Blueprints
Post by: dodo00 on August 25, 2015, 07:24:39 PM
I have lots of rare blueprints of the winter palace in st Petersburg, even the first three really obscure ones! They're from a rare book I had to get shipped from Ukraine, but I can't read a lick of russian, so if you can translate the captions, that would be much appreciated. If you have any blueprints of the winter palace, please do post them. If you have any summer palace blueprints, feel free to post them too, because the two palaces are like two peas in a pod and I like that one too. I'll hopefully start posting tomorrow, but ill see if I can upload one tonight too.

I'll start out with one I found online, a cross section of st Georges hall(http://www.arthermitage.org/Giacomo-Quarenghi/Design-of-the-St-George-Hall-in-the-Winter-Palace-Horizontal-Section-Showing-the-Wall-and-the-Throne.big.html)

Alright, here's how it should be about to go down. I'll first post plans of the first winter palace, then the second one, then the third one, then the Apraksin palace which later was rebuilt as the current winter palace, then the wooden palace they stayed in while the current one was being built, THEN the current one. Also, Catherine palace plans will now go on a separate thread cause i came across a whole bunch of them.

Here, you can see that the second winter palace sat on the site of (I think) the hermitage theater.

Now, onto the third winter palace, which had the second palace as just one of its terminating wings.

Now, the Apraksin palace. Remember, this is the core of the current winter palace, though it was completely demolished before construction began on the current one.
this is what a preliminary plan said it would look like
(http://imageshack.com/a/img913/43/WM7Rde.jpg)
but it ended up getting a full third floor
(http://imageshack.com/a/img673/3614/mPoJEn.jpg)
then, there were huge additions, I think that was when the empress moved into it.
here you can see the old on the left, and the additions on the right and moving towards the top of the page
(http://imageshack.com/a/img661/2135/BwqbMs.jpg)
here's the new west facade (the facade looking right on the plan up above and on the floor plan below)
here's that same facade after an addition
(http://imageshack.com/a/img905/7374/Uijhg4.jpg)
and, here's a floor plan of the finished thing

Now, after the Apraksin palace was demolished to make way for the final Winter Palace, the royals had nowhere to live, so in a few months they had a huge wooden palace built, which started out well-planned, but by the end of construction was a complicated monstrosity. It was eventually dismantled for building materials to an extension to some other palace.

NOW for what you've all been waiting for, the blueprints to the current and final winter palace. Well, there's quite a few of them. I'll start out with three of the facades. Plans of the east facade are rare, since it was mangled early on by the addition of St. George's hall, but I have a plan of that one too Ill post in the future. Keep in mind these plans i think are from the mid 1800s.

Now for floor plans. Here's six main floor plans of varying qualities and stages in the palaces' history, the last two being the ground floor.

Now, here's the more obscure stuff, stuff from that seventies russian book from ukraine.

weird interior of one of the earlier winter palace versions
(http://imageshack.com/a/img537/730/Hn1U1E.jpg)
I think this is an elevation of the throne room of the Apraksin palace
(http://imageshack.com/a/img673/2493/xHcp13.jpg)
I think the upper image is another elevation of the Apraksin palace throne room, the lower one i dont really know, youll have to translate the caption yourself
(http://imageshack.com/a/img538/4612/xOrMup.jpg)
This is ceiling plan of something, probably the throne room of apraksin palace but again I dont really know
(http://imageshack.com/a/img540/8706/vMLxWg.jpg)
these all appear to be scrapped sketches for the extension of Apraksin palace. These extension plans were scrapped, I think, when it was decided to just tear down the whole thing and rebuild it into the Winter Palace we have today.
These next two pictures are from one of the scrapped designs for the winter palace.
This is the super rare EAST elevation, from before the addition of St Georges hall mangled the whole thing, and it was covered up by the hermitage extensions.
Here's a window plan
(http://imageshack.com/a/img661/7051/hQbOzM.jpg)
Next, three sections of the Jordan staircase!
Here, an elevation of the winter palace throne room, before it was divided up into the royal apartments!
Im guessing this is the ceiling to the winter palace throne room, but again, dont really know
(http://imageshack.com/a/img909/6288/vnnNlA.jpg)
some window elevations
(http://imageshack.com/a/img538/1840/zWkgqy.jpg)
Im assuming this is the pulpit in the chapel
(http://imageshack.com/a/img673/1040/Xj2FOx.jpg)
some sort of mezzanine library maybe? again, you have to translate the caption yourself
(http://imageshack.com/a/img661/1543/jlNB3F.jpg)
Now, something Im really proud to be able to post, the plans to the short-lived opera house in the southwest corner!
now I know its not a blueprint, but heres a depiction of what i think is the old winter palace throne room
(http://imageshack.com/a/img538/6154/ssaXPU.jpg)
honestly no idea on this one
(http://imageshack.com/a/img538/2479/zP8WbP.jpg)
Here's a plan of the throne room, with some wierd oval configuration in it? caption holds the answers to what that is i think
(http://imageshack.com/a/img538/2939/dOOMTy.jpg)
no idea on this one either
(http://imageshack.com/a/img537/8599/HpS4jt.jpg)
I think this is a side elevation of st georges hall
(http://imageshack.com/a/img540/8030/0XiSy6.jpg)
No idea youd have to translate the caption. actually ill just say TTC when you need to do that from now on
(http://imageshack.com/a/img661/8692/BRtcwL.jpg)
I think this is one of the three big neva staterooms
(http://imageshack.com/a/img673/3315/4DfQuB.jpg)
I think this is also one of the neva staterooms
(http://imageshack.com/a/img661/6549/QMqLEZ.jpg)
Here's I think a cutaway of nicholas hall
(http://imageshack.com/a/img661/2396/zo6vIj.jpg)
TTC
(http://imageshack.com/a/img538/6240/OmcDbD.jpg)
TTC

TTC

A floor plan of the southwest corner of the main floor in 1818
(http://imageshack.com/a/img540/1791/fBVfze.jpg)
TTC
(http://imageshack.com/a/img540/9927/Z1lhej.jpg)
the royal apartments floor plan in the northwest corner
(http://imageshack.com/a/img661/8176/wbkSPH.jpg)
TTC
(http://imageshack.com/a/img540/718/YILXXj.jpg)
the main floor, the rooms right behind the south facade on that square with the column, back in 1827
(http://imageshack.com/a/img537/1995/Ygx0jV.jpg)
another plan of the royal apartments in the northwest corner
(http://imageshack.com/a/img661/9995/AUBXXX.jpg)
TTC
(http://imageshack.com/a/img661/3594/IUWbSo.jpg)
I think this is a plan of the october staircase where it starts on the first floor
(http://imageshack.com/a/img911/9242/ds5Fnp.jpg)
Top, TTC. Bottom, floor plan from 1830.

Also, the site https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ru&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fbookz.ru%2Fauthors%2Figor_-zimin%2Fzimnii-d_007%2F1-zimnii-d_007.html&edit-text=&act=url has nine pages of a book that goes into incredible detail on the history of the private apartments all the way back to the ones prepared in the 1760s! There are some plans explaining the locations of the rooms too, and there's one plan that tells of the layout of the third floor of the northwest corner! Information is so detailed I can barely understand what rooms they are mentioning, so you know it's good stuff

Sorry, you guys! My photobucket account (or whatever it was) died a couple years ago, but I'm now again in possession of my book of rare blueprints etc; I might begin reposting some of the rarer ones. You can still find my sources for most of the older incarnations of the palace at the bottom of those posts though!

Ok! Screw whatever site I used to use, and I don't feel like embedding the images again, so here's an imgur gallery containing all the blueprints:

http://imgur.com/a/FVFlY

Keep in mind, some of those pictures are from before the 1837 fire, and some are from after. The captions provide dates and english descriptions, usually. Also, some are upside down, sorry!

Here's some highlights from the gallery:
(http://i.imgur.com/XGGXHZd.jpg) the hexagonal telegraph tower
(http://i.imgur.com/2YwWmXv.jpg) the neogothic library
(http://i.imgur.com/1aytKMD.jpg) rotunda cutaway
(http://i.imgur.com/HZJmXVN.jpg) basement kitchen plans
(http://i.imgur.com/4gf3j4E.jpg) opera house cutaway in southwest corner
(http://i.imgur.com/7tFuwAA.jpg) some of Rastrelli's early variations for the floor plan

These are all from the 1990 book, ISBN 5-274-00375-3
It's all in russian, but if you can read russian I'd highly recommend getting a copy!
