May I nominate Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Countess Sophie Chotek.

Having found the love of his life, Franz Ferdinand defied everybody to marry her. They had a happy marriage, and were devoted parents. After the bomb in Sarajevo, Franz Ferdinand tried to persuade Sophie not to accompany him to the hospital to see the injured, but she wouldn't leave him.

Not bad Ann. Victoria & Albert spring to mind for me but hard to make a case against FF & Sophie for the reasons you mention as well as Ferdinand's progressive political outlook that was never given the opportunity to unveil itself. Ferdinand was turning the page from the somewhat narrow minded post-Victorian views of those other European monarchs to a new form of ruler. Personally his defiance in marrying Sophie was also an impressive break with tradition and a much more modern/liberalized view of love & relationships. Titles and social status be damned...marry who you fall in love with!

Beautiful family to boot...the Romanovs had that much but were sorely lacking in some of the other aforementioned areas.

Franz Ferdinand did have some progressive ideas, but I wonder whether he would have made a good Emperor, because he absolutely hated the Hungarians. After all, he travelled to Sarajevo by sea in order to avoid setting foot on Hungarian territory.

Now, for some light relief, how about that charming but unintentionally comic pairing, Franz, Duke of Teck, and Princess Mary Adelaide? I tend to prefer the sensible and serious-minded, but these two make me smile, having to flee to Florence to get away from their creditors. Franz was, of course, a very handsome man, and I have visions of him being  squashed by the gigantic Mary Adelaide when she rolled over in her sleep. They then had three sensible and serious-minded children, plus that chip off the old block, Francis of Teck, who began his career of profligacy by throwing his housemaster at Wellington over a hedge for a bet!

Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (future King of the Belgians) and Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales.  Tragic love story.

There were a lot of tragic love stories back then.

For some reason, I am just drawn to them :)

Yeah, there is just something about them that draws one in.
