I'm one of those darned WASPs (white Anglo-Saxon Protestant) with a primarily English/German background. At first I was thrilled to think that Alexandra and I shared the same basic ethnicity . . . and then I read the stats and found that most Anglo-Saxon citizens of the United States have the same German/English mix. Dang, so much for cosmic reincarnation!   :-[  ::)

I was born in Southern California and have lived here most of my life except for a couple of years in Florida--while my dad, who was in the Marine Corps, was stationed in Pensicola--plus one glorious week in Hawaii, two weeks visiting relatives in upstate New York, and two glorious weeks each in England and in Russia!

I was born in Washington DC raised in the boring town of Mount Rainer Maryland, untill I was 10 and we moved back to DC. I now live in the dangerous but fun north west part of DC. My Grandmother was 100% Ethiopian she came to the United States for college and married my Grandfather of unknown African American ancestry. My dad married my mother who is of mostly German descent on both sides but, they came from Denmark. My Grandfather on my fathers side also says we have Indian in our Family, he names a different tribe everytime so I dont believe him. lol He has no proof. So that makes me a American/German/Ethiopian/Danish by location teenager.

I'm from Boston USA and completely enjoyed my trip including my visit to the Catherine Palace and the Alexander Palace but found most of the connditions at the AP deplorable and it saddened me greatly when I found it almost impossible to visualize Nicholas, Alexandra, their five children, courtiers and servants living in the same areas I was looking at.  The conditions at the Yousoupov Pavillon somewhat better seeing the situation being straightened with all kind of construction going on,  Am really looking forward to my membership in this group.

Hi Everyone,

All of these international contacts makes me feel genetically parochial  ;D !

I am English of no recent foreign descent, though I can claim descent on both my mother's and father's side from Norman Knights who came over with William the Conqueror .... no land or fortune alas ! Probably lost in the civil war, or gambled away .. >:(

Where abouts in Oxfordshire were you brought up Tobik ?? as that's where I live !!

My Mother's maiden name was de Turberville, and as she came from near Thomas Hardy country (Wiltshire/Somerset) perhaps her ancestors were an inspiration for Tess of the d'Urbervilles ?? We like to think so !! ;)
I visited Coity Castle in South Wales last year which was built by Sir Pagan de Turberville in the 12th century ... just ruins now unfortunately.

Wow, Greg! My family tree is not so old. In fact, certainly, but I don't know it...So, you are a little French... ;) (well, Normand I know!) My mother's mother is also from this part of the France... And the family tree is quite old , from what I know (Middle Age too, but not as far as 12th c...) My father's side is Slavic and French (the family tree goes back in the French Revolution) and for the Slavic (Russian and Ukrainian) I don't know... I just know my great grand parents' parents' name.: Pomarev, Gharasyn and Kondrashov. As you can see one is missing... Well, I'm also Scandinavian (or Normand or Viking or Varegue as you want!! ;) ;D
It's extraordinary how family tree show our "mixed"roots! I love that! That fascinates me!

Trixie, I live in Fredericksburg as well! Well, technically Spotsylvania, over on the Chancellorsville battlefield, but it's just down Rte 3 from you! :)

I was born in Leipzig, Germany, lived there until I was three, was raised in Canterbury, England (where I consider home and still own the family house), and have since been dragged to the States by my husband. ;) Oh, how I love dual citizenship...;D I have UK and US, and I was eligible for German, but chose not to use it. My parents and brother moved here when I was eighteen and starting uni at Oxford (long live the Turl Street Pub!), though I didn't arrive permanently until I was twenty-one. My heritage: English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh (like my name doesn't make that one completely obvious), German, French, Russian, and a trace of Native American, though I couldn't look less the part if I tried. Eventually, my husband and I are looking at moving me back to England, most likely in Yorkshire. That was decided before, but now, with lovely people like Bluetoria, Alicky, and Martyn, just TRY and keep me from the North! ;)

Arianwen

As long is the second round is on me, I'd say that's more than fair! I imagine it'll be about four to six years before we get there, as my husband needs to get through medical school first, but as soon as humanly possible, I'll be picking out a lovely house in Wensleydale. ;D Oh, I really can't wait!

Arianwen, sorry to get back to you so late.  I also live in Spotsy county - Salem Fields, off Gordon Rd.  What a wonderful find !!!  :D

I have told my husband, Duncan, that I would be more than willing to move to England (he was born in Essex), but he likes the U.S.

We must get together as fellow Virginians (for the time being).  There is a brew pub in F'burg that I've never tried before and is supposed to be very good.

Let me know if you're interested - take care !

lol I'm the opposite from your husband. I've been begging mine to take me back to England, though I love being close to my parents, brother, and grandparents. My husband never used to get it when I said that you could blindfold me, put me in a plane, and take me anywhere in the world, but as soon as you put me on British soil, I'd know. Sure enough, we went to see my extended family in England for Christmas, and as soon as I stepped out of the doors at Heathrow, I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and apparently started to glow. England will always be home, but when all is said and done, I'd rather be anywhere with my husband and daughter than in England without them.

Thanks for the good wishes! :) The worst part has been being stuck at home with nothing to do, as my husband's been doing all the cooking and housework so I don't give myself coughing fits, and I can't work (I'm a substitute teacher) until I'm healthy again. It's a good thing I have a few sewing and counted cross-stitch projects, let me tell you. ;) If you'd like, go ahead and PM me, so we don't get in trouble for taking this off-topic. ::) I'd love the chance to get to talk further.

Sunny and our other Virginians, what say you to a dinner at some point this month? Fredericksburg might be an easy meeting point for the people who would be coming from further up north or south, but I'm flexible.

Regards,
Arianwen

An another boy from Holland, the Netherlands. My real name is Gerjo, on this moment 23 yrs old, living in a small town near the city of Zwolle.

Hier nog iemand uit Holland, de Nederlanden. Mijn echte naam is Gerjo, op dit moment ben 23 jaren oud, wonend in een kleine stad, dichtbij Zwolle.

People says we a family of the famous writer Charles Dickens.

Hoi Gerjo,

Can you tell us in what way you are related to C. Dickens, sounds very interesting.

Anna

Greetyings, y'all!  Great to hear where everyone's from!

I'm not nearly as interesting as the rest of you.

Born in Minnesota, moved around a lot: Saskatchewan, Texas, Iowa, South Dakota, back to Minnesota...small town like "Mayberry". Not too exciting but the kids turned out okay...

Am English and German on mom's side; Norwegian and (possibly...still working on it...) Chippewa on my dad's side.  (How to explain the blonde hair, fair skin and blue eyes???) (nature, of course!)

Am a distant relative of Abraham Lincoln, through his mother, Nancy Hanks.  HER family is originally from England: Hanckes or something like that.

Great getting to know everyone here.  I feel like I have friends all over the world!  Am expecting a cup of tea if/when I show up at your door....

I have a rather mixed heritage of Ukrainian orgin on my Father's side and on my Mother's side British empire in origin (we don't know if it is Irish, Scots, Welsh or Brit as Great-Great-Great grandfather was shipped to Newfoundland when it was a penal colony) and some sort of native Canadian.

I have the Spaulding nose. :D My aunt, The Aunti-Christ (TM), is fond of saying that when God was handing out noses, I thought He said 'hoses' and asked for one to go around the yard. I finally retorted one day, after several years of this, 'Yeah, well, when God was handing out rears, you thought He said 'beers' and asked for a six=pack.' That shut her up on that subject. ;) ;D

Oh, we have a long, private drive, too, with a gate that was open because a few of my mates had just arrived for breakfast. These ignorant prats told me they wanted to speak with my 'manager', told me to stop playing at 'lady of the manor' when I tried to gently explain that this was MY private home and not open to tours, and finally stormed off in a huff. I got a ring about an hour later from the constabulary, asking what had happened, because he'd had some rather brassed-off Yanks insisting that I was rude to them and didn't want them touring the house because they were Yanks or not dressed well enough or something. The response they got, after they affirmed they dealt with a tiny, blonde young woman, was, 'That would be our Arianwen Spaulding. Her family's owned that house since it was built in the 1400s. Didn't you notice the private gate? Besides, I don't think she's been rude to anyone in her life.' *rolls eyes*

It was bloody priceless, really. She's a horrid, manipulative, amoral person, and I can't stand her.

My mum teases me that SOMETHING had to catch up to my eyes (when I was a baby, my eyes were my most dominant feature, and they really still are, but now, there's more balance), and while my daughter has most of my husband's features and my eyes and facial expressions, we're trying to figure out whose nose she inherited. Mum has the 'perfect' nose, and we're starting to think Laura might have inherited it. Lucky little thing...

Title: Re: Where do you come from?

Hoi Teddy,

Hi, Anna!:

Argentinian people loves her little princess! It's a great experience for us. But she isn't really a "common girl". Even if we are a Republican Country, the "Patricians Families" here, are (at least, some of them  ;D) from noble roots. Maxima Zorreguieta had nobility roots that goes to far to William the Conqueror or something like this.

She seems so fresh and joyfull, and so does the Crown Prince.  ;)

Well...I know it's a joke!  ;D For me she was a great woman. She did lots of things for poor people, and she even pay no attention to her health to keep doing things for them. Of course, some rich people hate her, for they wanted to keep mistreating the people who worked for them, paying them badly and all. So they lied about her, saying she was a prostitute and a demagogue and such things. When she was agonizing, one of these people wrote in the wall of Evta's house: " Hurrah the Cancer!!!"  It was awful.

Perhaps you wants to know that Evita fighted to win the right to vote for the women.  :)

I hope she will manage to stay that way over the years. :) It would be too sad if she would loose this once she is a queen and under much more pressure and public scrutiny than now.

Yes; I supposes she may end like Lady Diana.  :-/

I have read her autobiography, 'in my own words: Evita', and saw two movies, 'Evita' the musical, and 'Evita' with Esther Goris.

What a good thing that you read this book. In Spanish it's titled: "La Razón de Mi vida" ("The Reasons of My LIfe"). The Von Weber musical is very inaccurate, and so was the "Madonna" movie. The better one is the movie with Esther Goris and Victor Laplace in it. Pretty accurate, even if she was more older than the real Evita, who died when she was 33.

Can you tell us in what way you are related to C. Dickens, sounds very interesting.

Elisa- Ella welkom ;)

Robby, het verwonderd me niets hoor!
Keep up the good spirits zou ik zo zeggen. Jullie jonkies zijn tenslotte the future.Er is een tekort aan leraren- dus ook in geschiedenis denk ik.

Alixz,

Thanks for sharing the story on your grandparents. I like the way your grandfather called you liebchen. When people have from origin an other native language they often express themselves in that language when being angry or showing affection. Like my father- he's from Suriname- always scolded us or called us by our pet names in his own language, tho we speak normally Dutch.
Yes, Dutch and German sometimes sounds alike, so it's very easy to pic up.
As for the quote I don't know who wrote it, let's say anonymous.

Hi Anastasia! I feel better answering in english (as other people don't understand spanish).

I live in Asturias, and Castropol was the first place in which I ate a "Pijama", when I was maybe 5 years old. A "Pijama" is a desert with egg-pudding, cream, peach, anana and caramel.

Have you ever been here?

Best regards, JUANJO

Hi, Juanjo! Yes, I agree that it's better for the other members of the board to write in English, so, they could understand what we are saying!  ;)

So you ate a dessert in Castropol! I'll never been there (I didn't go to Asturias, for I couldn't but I visited Spain: Madrid , Barcelona and Zaragoza) but my aunt did and liked it very much. She even saw the house were her great-grandmother had born, and of course, we have lots of photos from there. They spend a while in Tapia de Casariego.

I didn't know about a dessert named "Pijama", but it sounds GOOD! I like caramel and fruits VERY much.  ;D

In the book "Kassandra" written by Christa Wof, she is the girlfriend of Kassandra's brother Troilos and the daughter of a man called Kalchas.
I also looked it up in "The Greek Myths" by Ranke-Graves (who tells the real myths, while Christa Wolf changed many things), it also says that she is the daughter of Kalchas, who knew that Troia would fall and went to the Greeks, his daughter stayed and was in love with the Troian king's son Troilos.

So Christa Wolf didn't change this.

Yes, we Australians rarely think about our background, do we?  I mean, apart from a bit of English and Scottish in mine somewhere, I wouldn't have the foggiest!  It just isn't talked about here, which is strange, I suppose... ???
Title: Re: Where do you come from?
Post by: Georgiy on January 24, 2006, 02:51:59 PM
I don't think it is that strange - after several generations of being settled in Australia, NZ etc most people wouldn't have much idea - and the further you go back, the more diverse the background is likely to be especially if from America or the Commonwealth as that many people from all over came to live in the 'new world'.

We have a census this year. Ethnicity has always been a big part of the census, and up till now we've had choices of 'European', 'Maori', 'Chinese', 'Cook Island Maori' etc etc. This year for the first time there will be a choice of 'New Zealander', which makes sense. That being said, in some ways I am so used to thinking of my 'ethnicity' as being 'European' even though neither born nor bred there, that even though logically 'New Zealander' makes sense, it could seem strange to tick it instead of 'European'.

St Awful has really gone downhill, though it was never anything much. The nearby Eden Project has just highlighted how crap it is, and poor management by Restormel has almost obliterated local business even though EU £ is there to get something done in the town centre/

Hello! I am new around these parts! It's interesting to see where everyone is from. :)

I was born, brought up and continue to live in South East London, England.  Though I don't have the awful accent often attributed to us Sarf-Easters.

Unfortunately I can claim no exotic ancestry.  As much as I would like to be in some part Russian, my entire family on both sides appear to have been ploughing fields in remote parts of England since 100 BC.

I'm born & raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. I was born in Maywood, IL & raised in Wheaton, IL. I'm African-American, but I'm proud to be adopted. My dad had distant Irish ancestery (my dad's surnmame in 'Phillips') & my mother has German ancestery (her maiden name was 'Slighly'). I was living with the Phillips as far back as I can remember, 1st as a foster-child & at the age of 9 in 1998, I was finally adopted. I have an older brother, Aaron & a sister-in-law Lindsay. I've been raised in an Evangelical Christian home & I live with my mother. My father went to be with Jesus about 5 years ago (Sept. 2000) due to cancer. My mom (Sandra) is  a nurse & my dad (Timothy) was a professor of theology at Wheaton College (our local 4 year Christian college). Alumni from the college include: my brother, sister-in-law, father, & several famous people including: Kenneth & Margaret Landon (Margaret wrote the book "Anna & the King of Siam", the book that partially inspired "The King & I"), Rev. Billy Graham, Dennis Hastert, Todd Beamer (the man who was on flight 93 on Sept. 11th, 2001, that crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, after he & several others tried to take the plane back from hijackers- he was the one who said "Let's Roll") & many others.

Hi ;

I am from Keesler Air Force Base, originally [my identical twin, Bobby, was born there as well---obviouisly].
We were both adopted by an ethnically  Scots and British couple --surname of CARNES--who were American citizens.   So what am I genetically ?  Hmmmm.

Genetic parents :  Hale + Thompson = ethnic British families
I now live an hour north of 2005 hurricane-ravaged New Orleans.   But unusually enough, I long to migrate to Britain!  At this writing I am stumped as to how to deal with the logistics.

Anyway, I like this discussion forum.  Ace group, it is!

You may find it interesting to note that the Romanov

Anne Frank did with words.    The Romanov family
documented their lives in photos and Anne Frank
did the same  [1942-1944] using her diaries  [3 of themin fact].   I find a wonderful connexion between Anastasia Romanov and Anne Frank.  Both liked being the family clown and had similar personalities.  Just my opinion  ;D

Aloha all!

I am fortunate enough to live in what many people call "Paradise" -- the Hawaiian Islands -- specifically the island of Kaua'i -- which is the least developed of the major islands (and I hope it stays that way!!!).

I live on the south side of the island in a little town called Koloa, which is about 1 mile from a popular beach called Po'ipu Beach.

I love this place very much and in fact, haven't visited the mainland for about 7 years -- no "island fever" for me!!  I'm posting a couple of pictures of the area on the south side of the island, closeby to me -- I enjoy hiking to deserted beaches that I have all to myself (well except for the odd monk seal that comes ashore to sun himself!).  There are many things that we do not have on the island (movies, theatre, good shopping, etc.) but the quality of life more than makes up for it to me!
And makes trips off-island to O'ahu a shopping adventure!!

Even though I'm black, and born in Maywood, IL (just a few miles outside Chicago), I've lived with a white, suburban family of German & Irish ancestry, who eventually adopted me in 1999, when I was 10. I've lived in the same house since I was 7 months old, across the street from the Chicago & Northwestern railroad tracks, in the far-western Chicago suburb of Wheaton, Illinois, known mostly for Wheaton College, a Christian liberal arts school, where my dad taught for almost 20 years & where my mom now works as a nurse in the college clinic. Wheaton is about an hour by car to Chicago, and about 45 minutes by Metra commuter train. (http://www.toltecimages.com/trains/later%20images/2144.jpg) I live about a mile and a half east of where this photo is taken. I actually live closer to the neighboring town of Glen Ellyn, and had I lived a couple blocks east, I would have been going to Glenbard West, as opposed to Wheaton North High School.

I am from Illinois. Am of Cherokee-Irish descent if you can imagine that combo.

In the states of Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee that is a rather common mixture, as is Cherokee-Scotch.

Leah,

Your post made me do some research as it conflicted with my memory of English political geography. Devon is a county and the cities of Plymouth and Exeter are within its boundries. Cornwall is a county. Devon and Cornwall share the same constabulary and criminal justice board.

David, you must forgive Leah. Devon and Cornwall are, indeed separate and indeed disparate counties divided by the river Tamar.

I seen the border line between Mexico and USA because in Texas when your going throw this huge gate and enter a whole new country. Many things are in spanish and it is hard to understand and like when you go in the store you have to get a translation dictionary for Spanish and English. It is confusing in some ways I can not say the alphabet and vowels. I would like to go to South America some day to the Amazon Rainforest. :)

I have read her autobiography, 'in my own words: Evita', and saw two movies, 'Evita' the musical, and 'Evita' with Esther Goris.

The better one is the movie with Esther Goris and Victor Laplace in it. Pretty accurate, even if she was more older than the real Evita, who died when she was 33.

RealAnastasia.

I love this film. But what do you mean by "even if she was older"? Esther Goris was born 1963, or thereabouts, wasn't she? So she was 33 when they made the movie.

Though, this question is always hard for me to answer.  Short of quoting Wordsworth let's just say I was born in Ottawa, Canada, and lived in Massachusettes, Michigan, and California.  My Mom was Irish/Catholic-Yankee/Anglican, and my Dad is from Lucknow, India.  His family were former Sikhs who converted to Christianity in the 19th century.  Okay, way more info than anyone wanted.  Got it.

I got interested in Russian history in college.  The Cold War was still pretty cold and I wanted to understand what it was all about.  Being mostly Irish by temperment, that meant going back to the beginning, or thereabouts.  Once into it, I loved the topic and regretted that there were only 2 courses available.

I'm from New Hampshire, USA. The President of France is summer vacationing here with his family, in Wolfeboro. The first family is staying with friends on their lakeside home. Wolfeboro is on Lake Winnipesaukee. Prince Rainier and Princess Grace vacationed in Wolfeboro which is the oldest summer resort in America, dating back to 1759. I like to swim and sail from my dad's boat, the Osprey. Or fish from a row boat. Right at the moment everyone's buzzing about President Sarkozy's stay. He dropped in at the Dockside Grille and Diary Bar for lunch last week and a couple of employees say he's a cool guy and very friendly. We travel from Center Conway down to the docks on Winnipesaukee, so I missed a chance to meet him, but it woulld've been cool if I did.

Salue tout le monde.

What an exciting place to live!  Unfortunately President Sarkozy would never consider coming to my city, and hardly anyone important does.  Now if only I lived in a certain city 600 miles south of here!

Best,

You are really lucky to live in New Hampshire, some of my relatives did way back when ( 18th century/ early 19th), including my Revolutionary War veteran ancestor ( in Plymouth, NH Conway, NH, and Amherst, NH Pelham N. H and Concord, N. H). I've never been to NH, but someday I hope to visit. All the pictures I have ever seen of NH make it look so beautiful- from the pictures, my favorite is the White Mountains area of NH. I myself live in Cornfields USA ( i.e. Iowa).

I'm a simply French Canadian. My ancesters come from France and Scotland. I live in a.. little city, near Quebec :) So, my maternal language is French, so I'm sorry for my English mistakes. And for everybody who's able to speak French : Bonjour, comment allez-vous  ? :) So, as you see, I don't have racins in Russia, I'm just led by my passion for the Romanov.

I live in a small village 40 kms. north east of Stuttgart, in the south west corner of Germany. The area is hilly, with a lot of forests and apple orchards.

My work has taken me to Göteborg on several occasions. It is a very pleasant city in summer, and I really enjoyed Liseberg and the boat trip along the canals and around the harbour.

I´m glad you liked your stays in Göteborg,Greenowl. Sweden in summer is wonderful and so beautiful!  I have been a lot in Germany and especially in Berlin, the Harz and the Mosel area. I like to visit the many small towns and castles you can see everywhere in Germany.  Berlin has also a special place in my heart. You can feel the history so closely there.

Hi Stepan!

Yes, Sweden is wonderful in summer with the long nights. I was last there in late June, just after mid-summer, and it never really got dark, just a sort of deep twilight. I was fascinated, as previously I had only been there in winter. I was trying to remember the name of the boats used for the tours of the canals in Göteborg, and I think they are called "padan"...am I correct? I also liked the "fish church" and the fish, which was most delicious.

Believe it or not, I have only been to Berlin once, but it is a fantastic city with a great atmosphere and such a lot of history. In character it is totally different to Stuttgart (or at least I think so).

Hello you lovely people, Just dropped in to say hello. I've been out fighting of sorts on continued dialysis. Not the best, but still holding on. Hope all of you have been getting along fine. I am here to ask if any of you would be kind enough to help me. We are addressing a very important need of gatherig before the Beijing Olympics, one million signatures. It's about the gross human rights violations transpiring in Communist China, since 1989. In over 7,000 concentration camps, those youth to elderly incarcerated are being harvested alive for their organs and tissues, killed while alive, by concentration camp guards with sharpened knives, their organs and tissues rushed to the camp hospital and rushed to awaiting Communist Officials needful of organs or tissues and or their family members or for those abroad needful of these organs and tissues. There are many of us on 'life support' very needful of an organ or tissues, but we would never knowingly go to Communist China to gain any tissue or organ from a human being whose organs and tissues are taken forcefully, most without any written consent. Many lives have been 'harvested from head to toe'.

So as peoples with disabilities and on life support, we are asking people around the globe to join with us in offering their signatures, so we may collect the signatures. Health permitting, I will go to the United Nations with others in the global community of every day citizens and youth, to ask the United Nations to bring all those guilty of these outrageous crimes against humanity to be brought before the world court. All we need from peoples is their valuable signature, in and for freedom's name. Thank you for you kindness to listen. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/petition/928204536. Thanks and God Bless!

Interesting that you should say that. My dad was in the Air Force during the Korean War and was stationed in Alaska during that time. In fact, my mom's engagement ring came from the PX at Elmendorf AFB. I was raised on Alaska stories and one of the most enjoyable nights of my life was hearing my dad talk to my two sons about his time up there. He and my mom went back in 1997 and had a wonderful time.

PX? We call it the BX... Now that is a weird moment! I've been to the BX/PX before, with a good friend (my family isn't military, but theirs were) and its a nice store. Were you born in Alaska? Alaska is a magical place! If you ever visit, be sure to visit Portage Glacier, we took our Oklahoma relatives there once, and it is a great boat ride!

No, I was actually born in Louisville, KY. My dad got out of the AF in 1955, came back to Indiana and got married. We moved to West Virginia from Cincinnati, OH when I was four. When my dad was stationed up there, one of his best hometown friends was also there with his wife and little girl - the friend still isn't allowed to say exactly what he did for the AF, but he did have to learn Russian!  8)

Philadelphia, Pa here. Living just outside of the city to be technical...

Because I was both very interested in knowing the breakdown of where the contributors to the AP forum are coming from and because I'm an uber nerd, I decided track each response the best I could. I've estimated the following...

USA/Canada - 41.4%
Europe - 33.5%
UK/Ireland - 9.5%
Russia - 3.6%
OTHER - 12.1%

For those who claimed to be born/raised in one particular country but are currently residing in another I gave a half credit to the country of origin and a half credit to the country of residence. I really wish I had broken things out by more individual countries. When I first started tracking responses I didn't realize so many of us were from Germany, Netherlands, Canada (separately), etc. But at least this gives a rough estimate for those, probably very few, who are interested!

I am rather hard to pinpoint. I was raised in Pennsylvania and D.C.,  but ended up in San Francisco and London.  I had an Air Force dad but never really knew him.
I consider my self more British than anything as I  was raised and educated by British relatives and teachers.  Went to British schools, for the most part and served as a British cadet in one of them. And I spend 3-6 months a year in  England. Haven't a clue what the family heritage is. I have been told so many stories, I could pick and choose any I like. The Greek & Russian sounds the best though.

Very interesting Robert...where in Pennsylvania were you raised?

I guess you would be one of the folks I'd give a 1/2 American and a half UK credit too then.

Thanks for asking, Edubs [?] My early years were in Gettysburg.  then D.C. and London. But no matter where I was at school, I came back to Gettysburg for school holidays. The Gettysburg relatives were Greek & Russian,  though, so that is where some influence came from.

Fairly dull answer here. I'm English and of entirely English ancestry. However, I've moved about a lot in this country. My father was in the Royal Air Force and I was pretty much born on the move (he had a sudden posting and my mother was living temporarily with my grandmother at the time of my birth).

Now living in Plymouth, but who knows for how long!

Very interesting, edubs, but that percentage for the US/Canada seems surprisingly low. And is it derived from origins mentioned on this thread? Really hard to say if this topic's respondents are typical of the whole forum. Mayhap not. And how far back did you go to get your data? Just wondering. Anyway, good effort. It's always fun to try to place a poster from their posts or name.

BTW, I'm from upstate New York, near the PA border, and earlier from Long Island,NY. How exotic...

Good observation, Rodney G.
They way I look at it, posters should tell where they are coming from.  I do not care about age and all that, but just what the perspective is from their own location, education, et alia. It might be a way of understanding why some posters may look at things.
I think FA would know from registration, but, this is ultimately none of our business.
For instance,  who, claiming a  nom de interent  as Grand Duchess of this or that would want  the rest know that he/she might be from the bum-tacky-tacky hinterlands ?
Title: Re: Where do you come from?

lol, that's amusing Robert...and yes I agree it's really none of our business.

But to answer your question Rodney I actually did go back to the very first page of this topic thread and did my best to track all responses. This is not highly scientific of course and it's possible that I counted a few people twice who may have posted where they were from more than once (a couple of years apart perhaps). Yet there is nothing to suggest it would heavily effect the percentages since it's just as likely that I copied down the same person who twice posted "Germany" as I did mistakenly for someone who claimed more than once that "Chicago" was their home...and so on.

It's also quite possible that this thread doesn't contain an accurate enough sample to be representative of the AP at large. But you don't get much more direct with your "survey" question than to title things "Where do you come from?", lol. But I'm sure there are many current members who haven't posted about where they're from, just as quite a few are probably no longer active members on these forums. Was just for fun really...and you may be on to something about the USA/Canada figure being too low. Is it possible that people are less interested in sharing where they are from, particularly when they assume they are already in the majority of the group, then to hear about the distant places where others are from? This might apply specifically to American members on this site. Some type of thought process along the lines of, "well I'm from NYC but who really cares since lots of people here are from the States...I'm more interested in knowing who is Russian, German, British, Italian, etc"

edubs, you're hired as the Forum's resident reearcher as of today. Thumbs up! I agree there's likely a  mild bias at work here in favor of the exotic, though if you're from Dagestan or Sierra Leone, for example,  small town Pennsylvania might  appear pretty sophisticated.

I'm a typical Heinz variety American with Danish, German, French, English and Irish mixed blood.

I was born and raised in Southern California in the San Gabriel Valley area. As an adult I've had the pleasure however of living on Santa Catalina Island for 3 years and have been in Big Bear (mountains) for the last 6 years.

I am from the UK (the roman city of Bath, Somerset) my Dad is half Russian and half Scots and my Mum was half Danish, half English and my christian name is greek (which is actually Thea not 'Vanya') so i am a real mongrel!. My Dad's mother is my Russian connection, her family fled Russia in the early 1920's first to France then England. I am going to Russia for the first time this august and hope to hook up with some of my relations.

Great thread by the way really interesting hearing where people are from.

I'm from Northern Ontario, in Canada. I was originally born in Vancouver (Southern BC) but we moved across the country when I was eight and a half.

My ancestry is mostly just English, and Scottish. I'm not sure of anything else. My sister's in-laws are Russian though, so my niece has English and Russian ancestry.

Greetings to you as well!

Well what your country lacks in books can be more than made up for by the amazing resources of this website and the members that post here on the forums. Stay around for a while and make some friends and just maybe they'll let you borrow a book or two :-) Otherwise there are ways for you to order books relatively inexpensively online. If you need some direction on where to start (there are many on here that know better than me but feel free to shoot me a PM as well) just ask!

I've been "stalking" this site for many years and I love it! It's so helpful.
I've found less than 10 books in libraries here but I did buy a few in a hurry in London many years ago (my treasure!).
I should buy some online as well. I hope I won't go crazy and buy them all and go broke, hehe >_<

Basically the lack of books here is the reason why this site is so important to me :)
Thank you all!

I'm American.  As for my ancestry I identify myself as Irish-Italian not just that's because what I am; but also because of how I was brought up even though I'm also Canadian and I might be Scottish.  I'm from the east coast.
