Grand Duke & Atruro,

If the first child is female do you think Spain will change their succession laws or do the Spanish still perfer a male heir?

They talked about the hipotesis of changing the succession law as a way to modernize the monarchy!

The succession law will be changed. Prime Minister Zapatero raised the issue as one of his pre election intiatives. However - the change to the constitution will require a general election and a referendum so they are going to leave it until the natural end of this present government. As the Principe de Asturias said yesterday there is no rush because there is his generation in between. The King also seemed to be of this opinion. When he was asked about the changes he simply said it was not important as the father was the heir not the child!

Indeed there is talk of changing the law. Should it be a male (according to today's laws), he will inherit the throne upon his father's death or abdication. If it is a girl, she will be second should Crown Princess Letizia give birth to a boy later on. If they had only daughters, the eldest will inherit the throne one day, as happened in Denmark with Queen Margarethe II. Spain has NOT a good record of Queens and female regents, let us hope that in this acse, if it is a she, it will be the other way round :)

The ancient Spanish name of PELAYO (shock and horror frankly) seems to be quite popular with don Felipe and his wife.

I don't think they will put Pelayo to their child if it was to be a boy...

Still, rumours about the baby being named Pelayo are increasing. I think the baby will be called Alfonso, maybe Fernando... If it was a daughter, maybe María or Isabel.

Juan never, Prince Lieven, because he would become Juan III and it would be a conflict, as for many Spanish monarchists, Spain already had a Juan III: Juan Carlos's father!

Maybe that is why the actual king uses the name Juan Carlos I instead of Juan III!  :o

Indeed, Grand Duke, that is the precise reason why Juan Carlos uses his two first names instead of the more common Juan III!

This is quite unusual, is it not? Like, in the UK, Queen Victoria was styled 'Her Majesty Queen Victoria' not Victoria I. I thought you only counted the numeral after there had been more than one monarch of the same name. . .

Not in Spain, my dear friend. This is something that bothers me at times. I mean, in English, Lady Jane Grey was "Queen Jane", here in Spain we talk about Juana I.

Joan the Mad in Spanish is Juana I la Loca, the same way many other monarchs which haven't been followed by other monarchs with the same name have the number: Luis I, Urraca I, José I, Amadeo I, etc.

I suppose it is a different tradition!

Thanks for explaining! As you say, a different tradition - just like the way Spanish people have two surnames!  :)

Don Juan was also called Juan Carlos, but he went by his first name. His son, who was called Juanito in the family, ascended the throne under the name of Juan Carlos I, I agree, to avoid confusion with his father AND the long dead carlist Juan III too! I personally doubt they'll go back to naming the child Alfonso. Fernando VII is so unpopular I wouldn't recomend it either, and I think Pelayo's an awful name. I'd settle for Luis (Luis II eventually), Felipe (VII) or another name that hasn't been used in Spain. I don't think naming the baby Carlos would fit at all sinc eit'd be Carlos V, the title used  by the first carlist claimant, and the same goes for Juan.

Post by: umigon on August 24, 2005, 05:05:19 AM

I hadn't thought about Luis, maybe too French though, but it would be a good option. Why not Alfonso? And Fernando, well I know that if Juan Carlos and Sofía had had another son they would have called him Fernando!
Title: Re: TM King Felipe & Queen Letizia
Post by: cimbrio on August 24, 2005, 05:22:59 AM
Didn't Alfonso XIII had a stillborn son (well, his wife) who was called Fernando? Anyay, I think there are far too many people alive in Spain who remmeber Alfonso XIII's disastrous reign, let alone his exile; I don't think he was an able monarch at all and had no charisma at all. I don't think an Alfonso XIV would sound suitable, it's as if the "Alfonso" era was over to me... Fernando's OK I guess, only I think ofFernando VII, another right a*****e; Luis sounds slightly French but people in Spain would actually discover there WAS a Luis I LOL I think it'd be a nice change frankly, it's be great if he could be born tomorrow, the day of Saint LOuis (b-day of Ludwig II of Bavaria hehehe) and patron saint of FRance...

Gonzalo
Francisco
Javier
Tiago (like Saint James of Compostela)

What about a girl?

Isabel/Isabella
Maria
Sofia (after the Queen)
Luisa
Beatriz
Pilar
Cristina
Elena

Any of these sound plausible?
Title: Re: TM King Felipe & Queen Letizia
Post by: cimbrio on August 24, 2005, 08:08:36 PM
Again I don't know if they'd want another Isabel, just because loathed sabel II, bu you never know. Tiago I'm sure cna be rule dout, and the same as Javier unless there's a reason for it, but I think they'd stick to family names: Francisco, Mercedes, Sofía, Juan Carlos... I think perhaps we may rule out names of their nieces and nephews (Irene, Victoria, Juan, Felipe, Pablo and Miguel) though anything's possible... in the words of the Prime Minister, wait and see ;)

I quite like them too, I can't stand the Windsors (at least the present Bourbons don't look like horses...). The Prince is quite handsome, and so is Letizia I think, so who knows if the next generations will be babes and hunks and not Infantes and Infantas LOL ;)  :D ::)

She is. I think she knows how to behave, partly due to the fact that if she allowed her family to go slightly snobbish and started making scandals they'd end up like her brother... chucked out!

Wikipedia, the free enciclopaedia, says:

Prince Felipe, Prince of Asturias (Felipe Juan Pablo Alfonso de Todos los Santos de Borbón y de Grecia; born January 30, 1968), styled HRH The Prince of Asturias, is the third child of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía of Spain. As the heir apparent and the Prince of Asturias, he is first in the line of succession to the Spanish throne.

Felipe was born in Madrid. His birth, after that of his two sisters, the infantas Elena and Cristina, ensured male succession to the Spanish throne.

At birth Felipe was given the titles of Infante of Spain, Prince of Gerona, Prince of Viana, Duke of Montblanch, Count of Cervera, and Lord of Balaguer.

The symbolic names given at his christening including the names of the first Bourbon to reign in Spain; his grandfathers (Juan de Borbón, Count of Barcelona and Paul of Greece); his great-grandfather King Alfonso XIII; and All Saints (Todos los Santos) as it is customary among the Bourbons.

His godparents were HRH the Count of Barcelona, Juan de Borbón, and his great-grandmother, Queen Victoria Eugenia.

He studied at kindergarten, primary and secondary levels, at Santa Maria de los Rosales, a modern school in Madrid which he attended as a day student until 1984.

He then spent the equivalent of the university entrance year at Lakefield College School in Canada.

From September 1985 to July 1988, His Royal Highness trained at the General Military Academy in Zaragoza, the Naval School in Marin and the General Academy of the Air Force in San Javier, and in July 1989 received despatches as Infantry Lieutenant, Sub-Lieutenant and Lieutenant of the Air Arm.

From 1987 to 1993 the Prince of Asturias studied at Autonomous University in Madrid, where he took a degree in law and also attended courses on economics. Later he completed a master's degree in international relations at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service of Georgetown University, in Washington, DC, graduating on 26 May 1995.

The ranks he holds in the Spanish Armed Forces today are those of Commander of the General Land Army Corps (Infantry), Lieutenant Commander in the General Navy and Commander of the General Air Force. He is also a helicopter pilot, qualified for instrument flight in Air Force Squadron 402. He has his Helicopter Pilot’s Wings for both the Land Army and the Navy.

From September 1999 to June 2000, he attended a refresher course in Security and Defence.

Since completing his academic studies in the United States, Prince Felipe has fulfilled his institutional commitments in his capacity as Heir to the Crown, chaired many official events in Spain and participated in key events in different sectors and aspects of Spanish public life.

Since October 1995, he has made a series of official visits to the Spanish Autonomous Communities with a view to gaining in-depth knowledge of Spain and making contact with other Spaniards.

He holds regular meetings with constitutional bodies and the main State institutions in order to keep in touch with their activities. He also attends meetings of the various bodies of the Central Administration and of the Autonomous Communities as required by his national and international institutional activities.

He grants public and private audiences to a large number of people with a view to receiving up-to-date information on national and international affairs. In particular, he holds meetings with people close to his own generation with outstanding careers in political, economic, cultural and media circles.

When HM the King is unable to attend, he presides over the annual presentation of despatches to Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers of the Armed Forces, and participates in military exercises held by the three Services.

He has made many official visits to European countries and to Latin America as well as to countries in the Arab world, the Far East and Australia. He shows special interest in all matters related to the European Union, the Middle East, North Africa and Latin America.

Since January 1996, the Prince of Asturias has represented the Spanish State at the swearing-in ceremonies for Latin American Presidents.

He has also played a very active role in the promotion of Spain's economic and commercial interests and of Spanish language and culture in foreign countries. He frequently presides at economic and trade fairs held by Spain abroad (Expotecnia, Expoconsumo and Expohabitat) and is especially interested in promoting the creation of Centres and University Chairs to disseminate the history and current situation of Spain in the main foreign universities.

He was a member of the Olympic sailing team at the Barcelona Games in 1992, which recalled his mother's position on the Greek sailing team in 1960. He also took part in the opening ceremony as the Spanish team's standard bearer. He finished in sixth position in the Soling class and obtained an Olympic Diploma.

On November 1, 2003 his engagement to Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano, an award-winning television journalist formerly of CNN, was announced. The couple married on the morning of May 22, 2004 in the Almudena Cathedral in Madrid, Spain, with members of several European royal families attending. Ortiz had previously been married to Alonso Guerrero, a teacher and author; they were divorced in 2002. The wedding was watched by more than 25 million television viewers in Spain alone, and was broadcast throughout the world.

Since the marriage, however, photographs have been published suggesting that the Princess of Asturias has lost weight — Gala magazine published some startling photographs of the princess in March 2005 showing frail arms, sharp shoulder blades, and sunken cheeks — perhaps an indication, observers stated, of anorexia. In an unusual move, the Spanish Royal House denied that she had that or any other illness.

On May 8, 2005, the Spanish Royal House announced that the couple were expecting their first child in November. The newborn would become the second in the succession to king Juan Carlos after prince Felipe. This has revived discussion about the reforming of the Spanish Constitution of 1978 to abolish the precedence of male heirs over their sisters.

After the March 11, 2004 Madrid bombings, the Prince and Princess of Asturias, along with his sisters Elena and Cristina, became the first members of the Spanish royal family ever to take part in a public protest.

In addition to his official activities, Prince Felipe is Honorary President of several Associations and Foundations, such as the Codespa Foundation, which finances specific economic and social development activities in Ibero-America and other countries, and the Spanish branch of the Association of European Journalists, which is composed of outstanding communications professionals. Most noteworthy is the Príncipe de Asturias Foundation, where he presides annually the Awards ceremony of these highly prestigious Awards, at the international level, that carry his name.

Within the framework of these institutions which work towards aims of general interest, he focuses his interest on activities in the fields of development projects, voluntary work, the environment, universities, the integration of young people in the workplace and business, relations between business circles and society and social communication.

On the occasion of the United Nations declaration of 2001 as the International Year of Volunteers, the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, named Prince Felipe an "Eminent Person" so that he could contribute on an international level towards enhancing the importance of voluntary workers.

Felipe has been heir to the throne since the proclamation of his father in 1975. In 1977, Felipe became Prince of Asturias, the Spanish equivalent of Prince of Wales.

On April 21, 1990, he became the first Bourbon to hold the Catalan title of Prince of Girona. Formerly no other Bourbon had ever held nor even used this title. He is also titled Prince of Viana, Duke of Montblanc, Count of Cervera and Lord of Balaguer.

On 30 January 1986, at the age of 18, he swore allegiance to the Constitution and to the King in the Spanish Parliament, fully accepting his institutional role as successor to the Crown.

By Royal Decree 284/2001 of 16 March, HRH the Prince of Asturias’s Guidon and Standard were created. The Decree describes his Coat of Arms, his Guidon and his Standard.

Felipe and his sister Cristina (her four children are blonds too), were very blonds, an i think that both of them have Greek´s features. Their sister Elena, the eldest , has brown hair and is the more Borbon of them.

Letizia looks like a midget next to Felipe (and she is skinny too)!  But yes, looking at the above picture taken in hungary and compared to their companions, Letizia has normal height.

Yesterday, Princess Letizia had the same scare Crown Princess Mary had a few weeks ago by having early contractions, but doctors got it under control and the Princess was sent home later in the day perfectly well. She is due sometime in November.

HRH The Princess of Asturias is expecting her second child in may!

Princess Letizia will not attend the gala banquet on occasion of the State Visit of Portuguese President Cavaco Silva tonight, possibly since she might suffer from symptoms that can "accompany" early pregnancies, but then I'm not an expert on that, not really, even tho I did assist at several births.I've wondered why they call it the "most beautifull miracle"since.... ;D

Hello! I very much am interested in history of Spain because in fast времении I am going to visit this country. Certainly, the Spanish royal family is very interesting to me. Therefore I have questions. It is the truth, what king Juan Carlos was against wedding the son with television journalistic? Because Letizia was not from royal family? It is the truth, what Juan Carlos does not love the wife of the son and the successor? It is the truth, what king was not glad to a birth of the grand daughter? Why the Spanish crown prince could not find the wife among representatives of the European royal families? Why wedding of the future king and the simple Cinderella became possible? Unless the simple girl can be equal to prince?

Hello, TampaBay!

Yes, it´s true Letizia was divorced from her fist husband. She was married just for a year, I think, with a man who was her teacher at the high school (of course, they were married a few years later...). The first husband of Letizia is not only a teacher, but also a writter. Actually he´s married with another woman.

After her divorce, Letizia shared her life, for a short time, with a journalist. She was also a journalist, she worked at the tv´s news.

Hello, Dmitry. I hope you will enjoy so much your days here in Spain ;)

Well, I´m quite sure king Juan Carlos and queen Sofia were really shocked when their son, the crown prince, did announce them he was in love with a commoner girl, journalist and divorced from a first husband. I suppose the king and the queen needed time to accept Letizia as their daughter-in-law. But I think they love so much their little grand-daughter Leonor, she´s a very cute child and spanish people likes her.

Princess Letizia's first marriage to Alfonso Guerrero (born in Mérida, Extremadura in 1962) was only a civil marriage, i.e., they weren't married through the church, which is why there was no problem when Prince Felipe and she married through the church in 2004. He was her lecturer, and has published a few books. Indeed he is married.

Felipe's eldest sister, Elena, is married to Jaime (de) Marichalar y Sáenz de Tejada, whose father was a count. One of his brothers is a well known, playboysh adventurer.

The other sister, Cristina, is married to Iñaki (de) Urdangarín y Liebaert, who is Belgo-Spanish. He was a handball player and first met the infanta in Atlanta during the Olympic Games held there in 1996. It is said that his family has nationalistic inclinations and political connections with the PNV, the Basque Nationalist Party.

The cause of death was suicide.  Terrible for any family to deal with.  Hopefully this will not be turned into a public spectacle, but left in peace as a private event within the family of the former Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano, not something that has to deal with the Royal Family.

No official statement has been issued, anything related to the cause of death is speculation, pure speculation, and speculation has gone way over the top in Spain. But that it has affected the Royal Family is clearly obvious,as the deceased is the sister of the future Queen of Spain and to emphasize their support for the Princess of Asturias and the Ortiz Rocasolano family, they turned out in force yesterday,HM Queen Sofia returned to Madrid while being on a tour for the Coóperacion in Asia,to be with the Principes de Asturias and the Ortiz Rocasolano family at this difficult time.Opposite from what some circles like to believe and blabber about, the family is closely knitted. However I agree we should not make a spectacle out of this,on itself sad situation,on this Forum,as has been done on other Boards/Forums let alone the invasive press. As I had nothing to add to Yseult's moving tribute,I would have left it at that for tact and discretion's sake, but then that isn't,obviously,a commonly shared view.

As far as it is know here, in Spain, Erika Ortiz suffered from a nervous condition and this may have caused her tragic end. Nothing much has been said, because the family wants, of course, to keep private this issue.

She was, as it has been said, 31 yo, and had a daughter.

If I remember correctly, those kings Divinely designed by Good and the Bible went out of fashion some time ago... And I don't think that the French are going to like the idea of a Spaniard ruling them. After all, they have Luis Alfonso de Borbón for that matter, and they don't care either.

And, bearing in mind that in his time it was murmured that the intervention of God in Louis XIV's come to life is reduced to Mazarino -sorry,I  can't help being a silly joker...-, well, I dunno what to say about it...

And, finally, bearing in mind what happened to Louis XIV' grandson, were I SAR prince Felipe I would be quite careful with the future. Well, he or his grandson ;D

It is said that Erika wrotte letters to her parents, her sisters and the father of her daughter, but, obviously, the letters are not of public knowledge.

Up until the time of Alfonso XIII=Alphonso XIII, Spanish royal names were translated into English. That has not been the case with JCI and Felipe Juan Pablo Alfonso de Todos los Santos. How will Felipe be known when his time to reign comes? Felipe VI or Philip VI? And what about Leonor=Eleanor?
Title: Re: TM King Felipe & Queen Letizia

In my opinion, since these two adult individuals are so well-known, the Spanish names will prevail.  (It has been eons since I last saw His Majesty's name rendered as "John Charles" and then I probably only noticed it as a curiousity in context. This MAY occur possibly in exceptionally formal documents rendered into English for an English-speaking country, such as ambassadorial credentials. And even if the document/s required the Royal signature, would you presume that His Majesty would sign as "John Charles I" ?)   As for His Royal Highness, how can we be certain that he would choose "Felipe" as his regnal name?   AP
