Title: Queen Margarethe II & Prince Henrik
Post by: QueenEna1887 on April 02, 2005, 11:42:19 PM
Queen Margrethe seems to be my favorite female monarch in Europe, does anyone have any information on her early childhood, where she went to school as a child, how was it like growing up being an heir, and how was her relationship with her parents and sisters?

Margrethe was born one week after Germany had occupied Denmark, and was naturally seen as the first little hope in a dark time.
Her parents would walk the streets of Copenhagen with her to show their support and sympathy with the population.
She did attend a private school in her first years, Zahles skole, but was also eduacated at home.

Isn't Margrethe II not actually a legitimate Queen, but a crowned regent?  I know that doesn't really make sense, but i read (during all the CP Mary media hype in Australia) that while her father took steps to allow her to constitutionally become Denmarks head of state she isn't as 'complete' as a King would be.

I'm not sure about this, Im definate about the reporting of her being a regent though, and it was in The Age, which is a very reliable newspaper.

Queen Margrethe is the head of state, with the title Queen of Denmark. She is just as "complete"  as a king would be, since she is a female "king", or reigning Queen. The constitution dosnt seperate between a man or a woman.
It wasnt her father who took the steps to change the succession law, but the parlament.
I think that the paper might have been confused, since the Queen can be referred to as regent, but she is a legitimate reigning Queen, and has that title.
The Crown Prince has the title regent when his mother is out of the country and he reigns for her.

Not Maggie but Daisy!  ;D Margrethe  - Marguerita - Daisy.

A. Michelsen designed the enamelled Daisy brooch in 1940 for the honour of the newborn princess (I think she wasn't a crown princess when born).

This brooch is today manufactured by George Jensen, a famous Danish jewellery company, and you can buy it in a variety of colours. Also the Queen is often seen wearing the brooch and matching earrings.

Queen Margrethe II's nickname is "Daisy",her father called her that, and so does all the family.

I add a family-tree,click on the pics for names and birthdays,
http://www1.jp.dk/indland/kronprins/stamtrae.html

HM Margrethe Alexandrine Thorhildur Ingrid, born april 16th 1940,was called to the Throne upon the death
of her father King Frederik IX,january 14th 1972.

HM is also an accomplished artist/designer/writer and her work(paintings) is found on exhibition sometimes.
She also designed many costumes for theatre plays and/or ballets and complete sets, and,on special occasions,
designs vestments for the clergy of the Lutheran church.

In keeping with the tradition of her parents, the entire/extended family spends part of the summer holidays at Graasten Palace,so HM's sisters and husbands & children, grandchildren are taking part as well.

After that HM and Prince Henrik spend most of the summer in Caix,France,at their estate/winery Chateau de Caix.

During her absense her son Crown Prince Frederik acts as Regent, and in case he's abroad as well,
the Queens sister Princess Benedikte is Regent.

She seems so regal and "queen-like" in her formal portraits (probably because of her height and posture) but she also seems to have a real rapport with her subjects. She's fascinating to me as well because of her extensive university education, which seems something rare among European royals.

What do the Swedes think of Queen Margarethe's smoking habit? I read that in Sweden hardly anyone smokes and it is banned in bars and restaurants, whereas in Denmark everyone smokes heavily! Do any of the Swedish royals smoke?

Hello Bell_the_cat :)

Well, the attitude in Sweden towards smokers has become harsher and harsher for several years. A law which forbids smoking in restaurants etc came into force earlier this year. Despite that smoking is rather common, and new reports say that smoking is getting more popular among teenagers.

I don't think Swedes mind queen Margrethe's smoking habits. "All" Swedes "know" that "all" Danes smoke, so it's no big thing. ;)

King Carl Gustaf doesn't smoke in public, but it is said that he does smoke privately. Queen Silvia is a non smoker, and I've never heard that any of their children smoke. The late prince Bertil was a devoted smoker. I'm not sure of his widow, princess Lilian. If she smokes, she doesn't do it in public.

Thanks, Rebecca !

Thats the trouble with bans: it makes it seem more exciting to smoke. In the UK I don't think anyone has been seen with a cigarette in their hand since the 1960s
(apart from Princess Margaret, of course!). I believe the Queen Mother enjoyed the odd puff! Presumably Wills and Harry have experimented (but without inhaling, I hope!).

Back to Denmark. Do the Crown Prince and his brother smoke? I rather suspect that they do. Oh and Norway - smoking's banned in public places there too - does King Harald smoke?

I agree with you, mostly that is,except for the last part.It is rare for the British Royals yes,
not for most of their "Continental" counterparts.

I agree with you - a ban probably makes smoking more exciting. By the way, people working in restaurants are very happy about the new law, as working hour after hour in a smoky environment made some of them ill and others very tired.

Anyway, back to the topic. I've heard that both crown prince Frederik and prince Joachim are smokers, just like their mother queen Margrethe. Queen Ingrid was a very keen smoker as well. Concerning king Harald I'm not sure - I think I've heard that he is or was a smoker, but he's had some health problems lately, so perhaps he has quit smoking.

I have to say that queen Margrethe has always been one of my favourite royals. She is very wellspoken, very intelligent, takes her duties seriously and performs them brilliantly and last, but not least, she seems to have a very big and warm heart. :)

Now, if Anna Anderson was NOT Anastasia, why is Queen Margrethe so unwilling to release Herluf Zahle's dossier on Anastasia to the public? Wouldn't she like to help set the record straight?
Also remember, when the Swedish Princess Märtha came along with Herluf Zahle to visit the "Grand Duchess", she said: "But that's not Tatiana, it's Anastasia."
Curious and curiouser.
Kind regards,

Chatnoir, I don't want to get off topic too much, but it's been well and truly proven, by DNA testing, that the late Anna Anderson was not Grand Duchess Anastasia, so the record has been set straight here.  :)

I always found Queen Margarethe to be the most interesting, intriguing, intelligent and regal of the European royals... she's so youthful and exuberant in comparsion to QE and the Windsors, and she has managed to mantain a lively, interesting life outside of her duties as queen. Do anyone of you know whom Queen Margrethe II. is named after?

She is named after another very famous Danish Queen; Queen Margrethe I. whom was the first sovereign to unite the countries of Norway, Sweden and some of Germany under the Danish flag in a united Denmark, by ingenuity and shrewd skills.

Do you know how she got her nickname “Daisy”?

Because her favourite flower is a daisy!

Enjoy  ;)

That's not quite true, Byron. She is named after her grandmother, Crownprincess Margereta of Sweden. Ingrid wanted to honour her mother's memory by naming her first born daughter after her. The fact that the only previous female sovereign was also named Margrethe, was just a coincidence, allthough a lucky one, from a historic point of view.

Her nickname is not just because her favourite flowers are daisys, but also because daisys are called Marguerites, the french form of Margrethe.

That's not quite true, Zanthia. ;) Her grandmother’s name was princess Margaret of Connaught and she was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria of England. The name of Margaret sounds very heavy to the ear of a Dane, so they looked at the name of Queen Margrethe the I of Denmark, which in the spelling is similar, but in the pronunciation very different, so by choosing the name Margrethe they honoured not only the ancient Queen but also the grandmother, so it wasn’t that much of a coincidence.

Queen Margrethe the II, was christened on the 14. of may 1940 (around the same time Denmark where occupied by Nazi Germany), Margrethe Alexandrine Þorhildur (Thorhildur) Ingrid. Her birth was seen as a blessing by the Danes and as a light in such a dark time.

Her nickname does not have much to do with the French word though similar, the name for the flower in Danish is “Marguerit” which translated from Danish into English becomes “Daisy” and is the favourite flower of Queen Margrethe the II and has been ever since she where a child. ;D

Did you know that in Denmark, there is a stretch of 3.700 kilometre’s which is called “The Margueritdirection/road” witch takes you through the Danish countryside and by the greatest tourist attractions there, this road is called so after The Danish Queen whom opened it in 1991. That´s grand. :D

Margaret may have sounded heavy to danish ears back then, but remember that foreign names often changed from country to country, especially when it comes to royalty. Margaret was changed into the swedish form; Margereta, when she married, and the danish version of that name is Margrethe. And when you look at her name, you can see that she bear the names of three of her female predecessors (Thorhildur was to show the ties between Denmark and our atlantic possesions, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands), so she would probably have been named Margrethe, no matter what the medieval queen's name had been. ::)

A little sidetrack: The Prince Consort is named Henri, but it was changed into the more danish Henrik, when he married Daisy. Just like the english kings, James and Charles are known in Denmark as Jakob and Karl. And the danish viking King, Knud, who conquered England, are called Canute in English history books. It's only recently we stopped changing names into more their more "danish-like" version. When Frederik was to wed Mary, there was a huge debate in the public if she should change her name into Marie. It was especially the elder part of the population, who wanted this name change. (Many of them pronounce her name in the heavy and somewhat flat danish way; "Mar-y", instead of the english way "Mari". Personally I think it's some kind of protest, because her name was'nt changed into Marie. Some elders can be so stubborn! ;))

But of course it was a popular and very patriotic choice of name, because many was put in mind of the great queen, especially considering that she was born a week after the german occupation. And it certainly touched the national pride. When her father died, there was grand discussion of wether she should be Margrethe I or Margrethe II, considering that medieval Margrethe first was queen of Norway, and only later became queen of Denmark as well. But that was settled once and for all when the prime minister, from the balcony of Amalienborg, officially announced the death of King Frederik IX and proclamed his eldest daugther Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.

Queen Ingrid once said that Margrethe was called Daisy from the very beginning by both her and her husband. And the famous Marguerit/Daisy jewellry was made in connection with her birth. (BTW, they have become very popular again right now, so the prices, after being quite moderate for a generation or so, have gone through the roof lately) So I guess it's only natural that Daisy always have felt something special for this particular flower. ;)

What do the Swedes think of Queen Margarethe's smoking habit?

The swedish King once in a speech to Margrethe said in jest: "But, dear cousin Daisy, when are you going to stop smoking?" :D
I think it was in connection with her 25th annivesary, but I'm not sure.

Last night the State Visit was concluded in Malmo,Sweden just across the Sont from Copenhagen now easily accessible by the new Oresund bridge between the two cities. Many Swedes work in Denmark due to this opening up of what is called the Oresund region,by concluding the visit on Swedish soil,a reception and dinner hosted by King Carl XVI Gustav and Queen Silvia,it was to emphasize the importance of this region to both countries.

Does the Queen still smoke? I know it is a filthy habit, but I used to chuckle when I read somewhere that a footman was always hovering close by with the Queen's ashtray ready to deftly whip it out for a tab of ash or for butts. I thought she may have given cigarettes up, or perhaps she just lights up in private now!

The Queen will design the sets and costumes for a new film based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale "The Wild Swans".
HM,an accomplished artist herself, has already designed many sets and costumes, but also stamps and robes for the clergy.
She is absolutely multiple-talented in a extraordinary way and is thrilled to start on this new project;"I can't be on the set every day,
but will try and make as much time availeble as possible to be on the set".

The film, about a king with 11 sons and one daughter.,...should "it's a rap" by the end of this year.

Bit of a bummer.Due to vulcanic ashes after a vulcano erupting on Iceland on wednesday, most,if not all flights from the UK, Norway
and several cities in Europe to Copenhagen Kastrup International Airport are cancelled.

All airports have disrupted air traffic due to this and cancellations and delays come in by the minute at present. What a shame.

So is the flight of the Norwegian Royals departing from Oslo, they will come to Copenhagen by other means.
Crown Prince Haakon,on his way home after an official visit to the UAE is stuck at London Heatrow due to the ash rain .

Why on earth would they fly from Oslo to Copenhagen in the first place? What a waste of resources.  Surely boat or train would be  more  effecient.

Waste of resources you say?And flying to and fro Heathrow and San Fran 6 times a year isn't?Quelle difference ne c'est pas..

Anyway.Flying IS the most efficient, but as airspace over Danmark is still closed, trains too distant and water too slow,
the guestlist will not be disclosed until about 20.00PM instead of 15.00PM.

No-one could foresee a vulcano erupting in Iceland would cause these difficulties all over Europe, british airspace is closed as well.
Several Royals will surely not make it on time, but will probably be at the Birthday Gala tomorrow,HM's actual birthday.

Queen Sonja is on her way from Stavanger to Oslo by car, that will take at least 7 hours, the King can't leave Oslo and will preside of the cabinet meeting tomorrow morning first and then go to Copenhagen,Crown Prince Haakon will try to get to Copenhagen later on and Crown Princess Mette Marit is on her way by car to Copenhagen and already had started out this morning,a huge stretch too, driving to Malmo and then across the bridge right into Copenhagen. She will be the only one able to attend both days from the Norwegian RF.
Depending the circumstances Queen Sonja will either leave early tomorrow morning by car or fly.
TM Queen Margrethe and Queewn Sonja are best friends and it's really a pity this weather thing came up for both, and all others ofcourse..

Today HM received wellwishers at Fredensborg Palace:

According to the Danish press, the "spring gay" Prince joked that he did not have any more mistresses than this lady-in-waiting, who BTW is Camilla Castenskiold née Crone, married to Manor Owner, Chamberlain and Master of the Hunt Claus Christian Castenskiold, great nephew of that Castenskiold who married Princess Dagmar.

No disrespect to the Queen but I REALLY wish she would get her teeth sorted, the chronic smoking has taken its toll and they look terrible - I also hate to think what it's done to her insides. The yellow teeth really age her sadly.

???

I think he is still crying about his title prince consort. I know it´s a litlle bit unfair. Every queen is a consort. Why couldn´t men be King consort?
But he is a whiner. Or not? I hope Prince Daniel of Sweden is not so.

But he is a whiner. Or not? I hope Prince Daniel of Sweden is not so.

He is.So much so that he refused to attend the wedding of Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Máxima here in Amsterdam 8 years ago due to the fact that his son,the Crown Prince, had presedence over him on several occasions. He's a whiner allright, funny at times,he was a lousy father who firmly believed hitting the boys over the head and make them do things while forced to do so was the way to educate them. She,has always been busy being Queen and the intellectual she is and warmth isn't her finest point either when it came to the boys.As often both boys got more love and warmth by mormor, grandmother,Ingrid. Not that HM and Henrik didn't wish for the boys happiness, they just couldn't deal with being a parent and were too rough on both.
Like Frederik once stated in speech at an official dinner on occasion of his parents Silver Wedding in words directed to his father;"If spanking means you love us ,boy, you really loved us".Tells all.Maybe also why Frederik at times is/can be such a looner and why he was such a rebel before he settled down with Mary.

Anyway,TM Queen Margrethe II and her sister Queen Anna Maria of Greece listened to the concert by the Lifeguards at Graasten Palace where the RF traditionally stays a while during the summer.A tradition started by the late Queen Ingrid who's summer residence Graasten Palace was and all her family gathered there with her grandchildren during that time.Princess Benedikte was not present, she stayed with her daughter Princess Nathalie who gave birth to a healthy boy last nght saturday july 24th at 18.45AM CET.

The only thing with this outfit is Larry that she has been  wearing this one for the fourth time this year, last at the
wedding in London in april. She plays "poor girl"..in the clothing department and wears her cloth till they fall apart..
I think this colour dull to a fault, especially foe an adventurous and artistic Lady she is.And really, there is no crisis in

Ugh, I was present at Amalienborg when the family appeared on the balcony, and I tell you there were about 10.000 people but it was very funny, everyone at the courtyard was happy and the Queen in particular looked happy.

HM The Queen opened an exhibition of her own work;"The Essence of Colour"  at the Arken Art Museum.

She was asked to have an exhibition of her work there for the quality of her work,
not because she happens to be Queen too the rest of the time, something that
she was visually very proud of.

HM Queen Margrethe II has cancelled a State Visit to Chile from march 10th to 15th due to arthritis.
Her doctors advised against it in this stage of treatment, plus the long flight and extensive program
would be way too much of a strain.

Instead Queen Margrethe askerd Crown Prince Frderik and Crown Princess Mary to pay an official visit
to Chile at that time in which most elements of the original schedule will be maintained.

Not sure if this is the right thread, but not sure if it should have its own thread either.  Are there any opinions on the new family portrait?

It's certainly ...... interesting.  The likenesses aren't bad, but it certainly has a creepy vibe to it, which I am certain is intentional.

It's so creepy, scary and looks like a poster to a horror film. Thomas Kluge (The artist) is very good to make his portraits look like photos, and his paintings are always very dark, but I must confess I was so disappointed when I saw this. I was thrilled when I heard a new Family portrait of the Royal Family was to be painted, and that is was going to be a modern pendant to the Glücksburg Family Portrait. Thomas Kluge (TK) was at a gathering at Christiansborg where the old painting is, and someone said to him it really was a horrible painting, and that he (TK) certainly could do it better. That's where he got the idea, but I don't think it's a compliment to the Family, as it was meant to be. Everyone seems very selfabsorbed and estranged from each other, except for Nikolai and Felix. Christian was placed in front to show he is the future of the monarchy. A dark, gloom and sad future it seems. He looks lonely, sad and isolated from the Family and if you look at the area round his eyes, he looks at least 40 years old. Frederik look older than he is too, and Prince Henrik (the elder) and princess Isabella doesn't look like them very well. But the likeness of the queen, Mary, Marie, the other kids and Joachim are very good, though Joachim's gesture towards baby Athena seems very mechanical.

I was quite surprised when I saw it and it is certainly different, but personally I don't like it as it really does resemble a poster for a horror movie or a halloween party. I wonder what the artist's intention was in depicting the royal family in such a creepy manner?

During her speech on new years eve HM announced that her husband Prince Henrik wishes to retire this year,
i.e. with immediate effect.best thing he can do other than frustrating and embarrassing his spouse, his family
and the nation with his constant whining he "wants to be King Consort".He will not,so retirement is a blessing for this person.

Prince Henrik died shortly before midnight on Tuesday the 13th of February, 83 years old, at Fredensborg Palace. The funeral will take place in the palace chapel of Christiansborg Palace on Tuesday the 20th of February, where his closed coffin will be on lit de parade during the weekend and on Monday. In accordance with his wishes he will not be buried in Roskilde Cathedral's royal necropolis, where his wife eventually will be buried, but half of his ashes will be scattered in Danish waters and the other half buried in an urn in the gardens of Fredensborg Palace.

The word the Danes use in their epitaphs of him is sjov*, as in en sjov mand, a fun / funny man.
* Pronounced [ɕɒwˀ], with a Russian-style shcha (щ - voiceless alveolo-palatal fricative), then a typically Danish and English semi-diphtongized vowel and a glottal stop (Danish stød, also typical of Cockney, Estuary and Australian English) at the end.
