Title: Crown Princess Victoria
Post by: RomanovFan on April 23, 2005, 12:23:04 PM
What kind of duties does she do? I mean, besides representing the Swedish royal family at important events and stuff? And when do you think she will become queen?...I mean, don't the current rulers of a country sometimes have thier hier(ess) take over for them even when they're not ill or dying?

I think her father will reign still a very many years.  Many Bernadottes have lived a long life, so I think that she has plenty of time learning her job.

I don't know what other duties she is performing besides taking regularly part of the official duties and representing Sweden on several visits abroad. And of course giving out prizes and stuff like that.

She is a patron for (list from royalcourt.se):

I think that I heard somewhere that Princess Victoria has an eating disorder.
Title: Re: Crown Princess Victoria
Post by: Mia on April 24, 2005, 12:43:02 PM
The eating disorder (anorexia) was years ago. You can still find some pictures where she looks very thin. Today she is a true image of a good health.

The royal family told quite openly of the problems of CP Victoria and hoped to get time to recover. Their way of handling this matter must have helped a lot taking the worst stigma from eating disorders, but also boosted the research of eating disorders in Sweden where they have developed some new treatments for anorexia.

I just seen a picture of her in Japan, she looks really sporty bet I could still beat her in football lol. The Swedish royal family seems more down to earth then the others save Norway. She does look really healthy and humble.

Crown Princess Victoria was in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago.

She was here promoting a Swedish fashion week, and there was some coverage of her at a bowling club (lawn bowls) playing with friends and the old members.

I agree, James. :) I think she will be, too. I've only seen her at a few events (on tv programs of course). there was this special on the E! Channel about the next generation of royalty from Sweden, Britain and Monaco and they showed footage of Victoria from just last year. She definately looks alot younger than her age! So does Maddie.

There is a rumor saying that he is being trained to become a consort now (learn English, court protocol etc...)

I honestly think they should get married..I mean Victoria is 28 now? Daniel is one or two years older than her. Sweden is such a liberal country, I don't think the royal family would make such a big deal out of the future queen marrying a commoner, do you? They've been together for about 4 years or more, so why not? I think they make a cute couple. :)

I think the problem with him is not b/c he is a commoner but b/c of his occupation and background.

Realisticly, let her marry whoever she wants as long as her parents approve.

Her mother is a commoner and excellent Queen.  Her father is an excellent King and smart too. If her parents approve Sweeden will be happy.

I think the objection is not that he's a commoner, but that he's not a WORLDLY person with a great education.  Sylvia, the Queen, was a commoner, but spoke/speaks about 6 languages, has amazing social skills, and adapted immediately to her duties.  She comes from a wealthy family and was used to a more aristocratic lifestyle.
My guess is that if Victoria wants to marry Daniel, they'll let her, provided he undergoes the requisite "training".  The King kinda likes him....

I don't know anything about it but won't let that stop me from commenting.  :)  I hope she's allowed to marry the man she loves provided he's able to take on consort duties. Mette-Marit of Norway seems to be doing well and her ex-boyfriend (father of her son) was convicted of drug dealing. I don't think she moved in rarefied circles but she seems a very capable Crown Princess. I was sad to read when she had anorexia and was so thin. She seems really healthy and happy now and if her beau has anything to do with that I hope it works out for them.

It was May 1999, when Victoria completed trainee period at the Swedish Embassy in Washington D.C.

At June and September 2000 Victoria has also completed trainee perionds at the United Nations in New York. And in the spring of 1998 until the summer 2000 she took several classes within  the subjects of political science and history at Yale University.

Victoria have been told that if she had to choose Daniel or crown, she will take the crown. There is also one big problem between Vickan&Daniel, Daniel hates apper in public...
So it will be nice to see that can D finally take part in the CP:s birthday parties at July  ;)

Victoria will make an excellent queen.  She's studied abroad, travelled all over, trained with her father, survived a bout with anorexia, and seems to be very centered.

I think that early on she had to deal with the strong personality of her mother and forge her own independent road.  This may be a partial source for the anorexia, as Sylvia is very concerned about appearance.  But Sylvia is also an incredibly bright woman who speaks many languages and is interested in many issues, and she has passed this on to her daughter as well.

The main concern of the people in Sweden right now with regard to her is whether she intends to marry her boyfriend, a commoner.  She has made it very clear that her royal duties come before love, however.

Post by: Prince_Lieven on July 24, 2005, 04:48:12 PM
Oh yes, I forgot about Queen Silvia's unusual heritage. It has certainly rubbed off on her two elder children. On an unrelated issue, Prince Carl Philip is a dead ringer for Orlando Bloom. Anyone else see it?

Title: Re: Crown Princess Victoria
Post by: Prince_Lieven on July 26, 2005, 11:42:44 AM
She could indeed. I understand that Scandanavians have always been more liberal about marrying commoners than continental royalty. Besides, in this day and age who's going to kick up a fuss about it?
Title: Re: Crown Princess Victoria
Post by: RomanovFan on August 01, 2005, 11:51:09 PM
Crown Princess Victoria could marry her boyfriend, yes. I don't think the Scandinavian royals are really picky about things like that anymore.
There could possibly be a little fuss about it because if Victoria marries Daniel Westling, he would initially become Prince Consort, or if she decided to make him so, King Consort. I'm assuming there's alot of training involved for that position; affairs of state and such. He'd have to learn alot in politics and things like that. :)

She admitted to having anorexia (thru a palace spokesperson) in 1977 and it appears she'd been suffering from it for about a year.

She went through treatment (and I believe the entire family had counseling) and appears to be completely recovered.

It's interesting to me that the Swedes openly shared the struggle of Victoria, while the Brits did everything they could to keep Diana's eating disorder quiet...Just another example of how different these families are.

Viktoria really handled her eating disorder well in public. It must have been ultimately hard, everyone was staring at her and her thinness all the time.  Remember at the time I had many friends who were in the same kind of situation. It was a kind of "fashion"thing then, not that I mean anyone wants to get a disease because its fashionable, but people started to talk about it (or all those various kinds of eating problems) at the time. And I think her pattern or model was really helpful for young girls.
Good for you Viktoria!

The Crown jewels are on display in the Royal Treasury, with the coronation crown from 1561, among others.
The Bernadotte jewellery collection includes the famous "Leuchtenberg sapphires" (tiara, necklace, etc) made in 1805 for Empress Joséphine, seen on her majesty the Queen on many Nobel ceremonies over the years. There are various tiaras and really nice jewellery brought to the country by foreign Princess-brides. ;)

The Swedish royal collection is one of the 3 finest in Europe ( after GB and Holland). There are about a dozen tiara's including one ( of cameo's & pearls)that belonged to the Empress Josephine,a stupendous set of sapphires originally given by Napoleon to his stepson's bride Princess Augusta of Bavaria and a huge diamond diadem inherited from the childless Empress of Brazil by her sister Queen Josephine. Later additions include 2 tiara's from Princess Margaret of Connaught.About 2/3 of the gems are owned by the family foundation set up by Jean Bernadotte when he came to the throne. The rest are personally owned by the royal couple.

She is just too sweet, and I feel so bad for her when the press makes snide comments comparing her to her sister. Since someone brought up Victoria's birthday celebrations, I have a question: Why is it that the royals tend to have birthday celebrations MONTHS in advance or after?

I mean, I know Queen Elizabeth II of England's birthday is April 21, and her birthday celebrations are held in June; if I'm correct, it sounds like Crown Princess Victoria's birthday celebrations will be held next January, and I know her birthday is July 14.

Why is that?

Victoria celebrates hers on july 14th.Reason why Royals often celebrate their birthdays later is that in case of a planned extensive event the agenda's should preferably meet as best as possible so all invited can meet the date and attend.Or in case of a royal birth, like we had here in april close to Alexander's birthday, with Máxima in maternity leave and hands full with the other two toddlers, the celebrations are postponed till september as he marks his fortieth with a grand gala event for tout Royal Europe and the date suited best for those who will be in attendance then.

Or by tradition,Queen Beatrix celebrates her birthday on january 31st,but it is generally, and famously, celebrated on april 30th,her late mothers birthday to honour her memory.

The 30st birthday of HRH on july 14th will be celebrated extensively in Sweden,as besides the usual salute at Solliden in the afternoon, celebrations will start in the morning.

At 10.30AM there will be a reception for the government and members of parliament (Riksdag),followed by a military salute at the Inner Court of the Royal Palace,Stockholm,to which the public is invited to attend.Congratulations registers will be opened to convey birthday wishes to HRH.

In the afternoon the RF is at Solliden,Öland, where Victoria will receive the traditional flower salute by the public.

At 07.00PM the RF is expected at the (rather intimate-) Bornholm stadium for the concluding festivities of Victoria Day.

Title: Re: Crown Princess Victoria
Post by: Erika on December 23, 2008, 03:46:38 AM
That is an interesting question! I don't think the House of Bernadotte will change its name. The house of Windsor did not change its name when Queen Elizabeth married Prince Philip... But I am not sure. Is there someone who knows? Smiley:)
Title: Re: Crown Princess Victoria
Post by: Marie-Mathilde on December 23, 2008, 07:15:20 AM
Actually people often say about EII not changing the House of Windsor to the House of Mountbatten or whatever but it only changes when Philip's son Charles accedes the throne. For instance, Queen Victoria did not become a member to the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha when she married Prince Albert, she remained a member of the House of Hanover and was their last monarch. It was her son Edward VII who was the first monarch of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Do you see, or am I talking nonsense? lol! Therefor I believe that Princess Victoria will be the last monarch of the House of Bernadotte and when her child succeeds her, the ruling house will be the one of Victoria's husband. Seen as it is unlikely that she will marry a royal I would say the most likely thing to happen will be that either the child will carry on the House of Bernadotte regardless of protocol (like the Windsors say they will  when Charles should actually be the first monarch of the House of Shleswig-Holstein-Glucksborg-Sonderberg - his father Philip's royal House) or rename the House of Bernadotte in honour of their father - like renaming Windsor to Mountbatten. But who knows what will happen, eh? Hope I helped!

I assume it will be the decision of a future Queen Victoria or her heir whether she makes a formal change to the Royal House.

As to comparison's with the British dynastic name. Technically the Royal House is that of Windsor (as it has been since 1917) - the present Queen issued patents confirming that - however nothing would stop Prince Charles on his accession to changing that. In tribute to her husband she issued further patents that it was her wish that those of her descendants who require a surname should use the equally made up Mountbatten-Windsor.

Technically the British Royal House is Guelph (or Hannover) from 1714 to 1901, then from 1901 to 1917 the House of Wettin (Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was merely a branch of the Royal House of Saxony), then Windsor from 1917 by letters patent issued by George V.
Prince Philip as a Prince of Greece and Denmark had no surname - an arguement that the Greek and Danish Royal Houses still maintain. On his unnecessary British naturalisation he chose the anglicised version of his mothers name - Mountbatten partly under the influence of his uncle Louis Mountbatten and partly because if he used his father it was a too German sounding and if translated into English his most accurate surname would be Oldcastle. He was technically a junior member of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg however that in itself is a junior branch of the House of Oldenburg - on Charles' accession he will geneologically be the first of the House of Oldenburg to reign in Britain  (ironically had Queen Anne's son survived the House of Oldenburg would have course have ascended to the British throne in 1714).

This issue will be a major one in the 21st Century as the Royal Houses of Norway, The Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden and possibly Spain will all pass through female lines.

Thank you for that explanation of House names.
It is the most straightforward and explicit explanation of a confusing subject I have ever heard.

Now if all these princesses don't marry a Mr. Smith, we'll be all satisfied!!

Until he moved into the Palace with Victoria last year,Daniel didn't speak any language except swedish, which is a bit odd for a european tho..
He's catching up on that and many many more things he didn't even know existed, let alone had to deal with in the near future.

I agree with you in instance with what you said last. It may come to that point, I believe, someday when most of the royals marry commoners.I think most of them marry such, given no choice of contemporaries to be engaged to in other royal families. They are also practical for the fact that they follow their heart than other people's advice. Their happiness is more important than being tied up to a very imperfect match just to satisfy the need of marrying a royal like himself/herself.
Sorry if I explained my answer not so well. I hope you understand what I posted.

On the one hand, I DO UNDERSTAND  that royals should follw ther heart and marry someone they truly love. but personally I don`t believe that it is not possible to find a match within the members of their cycle. alix and nikolay somehow managed to meet, victoria of hesse and louis battenberg were also in love.the list could be continued. the charm of being royal is somehow lost. that`s a pity for me...

It just entirely depends on the person. Some can easily adapt with marrying the one they were pushed into while some cannot ( I believe most of them choose to be the latter as they don't want be martyrs on a relationship).
I believe it's just a luck to find the right one within a very small group of people just like the royals in Europe.

Let's talk about her anorexia nervosa again. Was she not warned when she was avoiding her meals?
It's impossible that her attendants would not not know what she's doing the time she was in the process of developing the disorder.

Yes,he will be created a Duke, but first and foremost a Prince of Sweden on the wedding day,a HRH,
and as spouse of the (the then- ) Monarch will have precedence over all members of the Royal Family.

I wonder why the engagement was announced so early given that they will not marry for another 14+ months. I suppose I am just used to the British Royals who upon announcing their engagement the wedding takes place no more than five or six month later.

Perhaps HRH Princess Victoria didn't want to wait another 6 months to announce their engagement and she wanted Daniel to start officially accompanying her to royal functions. Who can blame her?!

It is not unusual to announce so far ahead. We had the same here,a year of waiting from march 2001 till two two two,
but Máxima visited all provincess, there was something official every week,so time flew really.Suppose Victoria and Daniel
will visit the country extensively and he will be officially presented.

Let's talk about her anorexia nervosa again.

Lets not!Total nonsense to bring that about again now.

What she did do at the time was to bring the disorder into the open,
she deserves credit for that as it helped many others to talk.

But to bring it out and about again is to no avail and serves nothing,
no,it is not even historical, would be histerical. The past is just that and nada mas,
to me,and also that happens to be the attitude of the Swedish Court in this.

Daniel Westling, fiancé of Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria, has undergone a kidney transplant, the Royal Palace in Stockholm has said. The donor was his father, Olle Westling.

Victoria and Daniel name the day (23 Mar 09)
Daniel Westling takes Victoria Day bow (12 Mar 09)
A Svensson in the palace? Pass the smelling salts (26 Feb 09)
The operation took place on Wednesday at Karolinska Hospital in Solna, Stockholm.

"Daniel Westling has today undergone a kidney transplant at Karolinska Hospital and he is doing very well," Nina Eldh, spokeswoman for the Royal Court, told news agency TT. Olle Westling was also feeling well following the removal of his kidney, Eldh said.

The operation had not been announced in advance, nor was it previously publicly known that Westling had a kidney condition.

The transplant was due to a congenital disorder which led to impaired kidney function, according to the palace. The condition is understood not to be hereditary.

Crown Princess Victoria is currently on an official visit to Greenland with heirs to the other Scandinavian thrones. She is due to return on June 1st. Eldh said that the couple had talked over the operation long in advance.

"It was agreed that the Crown Princess would travel to Greenland," Eldh commented.

Westling and the princess, who announced their engagement in February, are due to marry on June 19th next year. Upon marriage, Westling will become known as Prince Daniel, Duke of Västra Götaland.

Hospital spokesman Klas Östman said he would not comment on an individual patient, directing all questions to the palace.

Thank you for all this wonderful information Lucien!

I just wanted to tell everyone that Kerstin Dellert (a swedish singer) has recorded a "waltz" named "Victoria" in which she sings about Victoria and Daniel. She hopes that she will be able to sing it to them at the wedding. She sang a waltz called "Oh, min Carl Gustaf (oh, my Carl Gustaf) at the king and queen's wedding and it was a mayor hit. You can still hear it one the radio. I have not yet found a link to her song about Victoria but when I do, I'll post it. In the meantime you can listen to´"Oh, min Carl Gustaf". Fun bit of trivia (from this amazing book (http://forum.alexanderpalace.org/index.php?topic=14873.0)) to disprove that Daniel has no royal connections: :-)

The local policeman in Vederlax / Virolahti, where the IF usually anchored during their summer cruises (The Bay of Shtandart was in Vederlax Fjord) and gave the local authorities a lot to do regarding the tight security, was called Westling!

I doubt he was a close relation though. "Westling" means "Westerner" in Swedish.

It will be interesting to see how many of the foreign media will be too lazy to spell the soon-to-be-married couple's dukedom of Västergötland correctly. (And if the diacritically challenged ones will be able to dig up the archaïc Latinized translation: Westrogothia, instead.)
Or pronounce it more or less correctly: /ˇvɛs.tər̩.'jœ:t.lan/. You can listen to the correct pronunciation here, BTW (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/08/Sv-V%C3%A4sterg%C3%B6tland.ogg).

I heard that the bishop (?) has problems with the fact, that Victoria want to go to the altar with her father. He is against it, because he don´t think it´s modern. Carl Gustav told him that he will bring the future Queen to the altar, not his daughter.

That's true, the bishop opposed to the fact Victoria wants her father to give her away as opposed to the "scandinavian custom" for the
bridal couple to walk to the altar together.Cosy ofcourse, but Victoria, the future Queen, chooses to be given away by her father,The King.
What the bishop thinks the Bishop should have kept to himself, one, two,it's not his wedding and he's not the Crown Princess. It is HER day
and SHE decides, and Daniel, anyone else is of no consequence, let alone some bishop....The Couple had a "conversation" with the old man
and now he's sailed aside so to say.Grumpy old man with verbal incontinence.
Title: Re: Crown Princess Victoria
Post by: Naslednik Norvezhskiy on June 13, 2010, 11:05:53 AM
The grumpy old man is not just a mere bishop, he is the Archbishop of Uppsala. (Which perhaps gives the whole argument with the RF parodic shades of Thomas Becket!?)

It is a very trivial issue, but nevertheless interesting, as it is just as symbolic as the monarchy. There are several sides to the matter:
- The Archbishop is afraid this will set a precedent for many future Swedish brides who take the Royal Wedding as inspiration for their own.
- Should the Church only be treated as a "supplier of ceremonies" for secularized people who pick and choose whatever suits them?
- And as noted in the Swedish media: Often brides planning their church wedding have no relationship with the Church, and instead of basing their wishes on the contemporary theology and lithurgy of the Swedish Church, their wishes are drawn from Hollywood movies and based on the ritual of churches in English-speaking countries! (No-one is saying this applies to Victoria, but it's why the Archbishop wants to use this opportunity to take a stand.)
- Isn't the custom of the father leading the bride down the aisle a patriarchic feature evoking the words of Ibsen's Nora to her husband in "A Doll's House: "I went from my father's hands to yours"?
- Isn't a patriarchic feature like this inconsistent with both the gender-equal succession which makes Victoria the heir to the throne and the fact that one of the four officiating priests at the wedding will be a woman (the Bishop of Lund)?

It's a trivial issue and I fully understand Victoria's and the King's wish. It's purely symbolic, like the monarchy, and not meant to symbolize former times' patriarchic transfer of a woman from one legal guardian, her father, to a new one, her husband. Nowadays it's just a sentimental gesture. But I also see the Archbishop's point very well: Why not let our symbols and rites reflect modern realities?

It's a very interesting discussion as long as one doesn't get all dogmatic about something so trivial.

More stuff directly from Swedish media:
The centuries-old Swedish custom is for bride and groom to walk up to the altar together! However, this would strictly speaking demand Mr. Westling to walk one step behind HRH the Crown Princess and will thus have to be avoided! (Walking down the aisle from the altar is unproblematic, as he by then will have become HRH Prince Daniel.)

Coming to think of it, did morganatic brides in former times walk down the aisle from the altar one step behind their higher-ranking spouses???

The celebrations of this fantastic festive week:

From Japan:

HIH Crown Prince Naruhito

Poor one. Without Masako. I feel so bad for the two. It´s unbelievable, how big was or is the pressure. It was so ludicrous how the brother of Naruhito presents his son: "See, I can beget a son. So, why I am not the crown prince?". In this court there are so many of this people. One prince, an older one, wants the concubinage back, and few freedom for the female members. Hello? We are in the 21st century.

http://www.kungahuset.se/download/18.40e05eec12926f263048000471/Daniel+hertigvapen.pdf

Thanks, Lucien, very interesting!
Explanation of the arms:
1. and 4. quarters: The lesser arms of the Kingdom of Sweden. (The three crowns, tre kronor, which originally was the symbol of the Kalmar Union.)
2. quarter: The lion of the medieval Folkung dynasty, which features in the great arms of the Kingdom of Sweden.
3. quarter: The provincial arms of Västergötland.
Inescutcheon: The brand new Westling arms, a modification of the arms of Daniel's home municipality of Ockelbo, featuring a fir-twigged line of partition (symbolizing forestry, the original is fir-tree-topped) and a hammer symbolizing iron industry.

While the Westling arms are cool in the way they allude to such fundamental Swedish industries as forestry and iron industry (and Daniel's grandfather even worked as a lumberjack!), I think they are a bit unimaginative. And I would so have liked to see the shield divided in three, with the ducal arms at the bottom and no double featuring of the three crowns, like the custom was in former reigns. I think that custom was cooler, as it made the arms more individual and symmetrical.

So nice to see that at least a few of Sweden's obscure, but plentiful nobles will take part in a prominent position:

Ian de Geer,8,son of Tina and Hans de Geer, grandson of HRH Princess Désirée,aunt of the Crown Princess
The boys are actually Barons de Geer af Finspång, one of the most renowned names in the Swedish nobility. In Sweden the originally Belgian name is pronounced /də jɛ:r/.

Of course it would have been nicest if 10 countesses had carried Victoria's train, 10 baronesses had strewn flowers, pageboys of impeccable noble pedigree had escorted them etc., but I guess it's all about för Sverige - i tiden.

Yes,people are funny, aren't they?Silly creatures.Ofcourse we all watch the wedding.

It will be a absolutely Regal affair, all and everyone present or represented,as in the case of QE II.What we will witness is
the last of Royal Weddings from this generation, kjaere Victoria's generation.I remember when she was born, remember her
parents and their glittering wonderfull wedding day,and just hope the weathergods and all others will make this one day as magnificent
as it possibly could be.Celebrating the bond between two young people who do hold such a huge promiss for a future, and a
heavy weight of a function, even tho it might seem a Swedish Monarch is without actual political power,a lot,an awfull lot
of goodwill and influence comes of it still.Goodwill and influence used only for the good of Sweden, and only that,it takes
capable hands to hold such privilige,to be able to serve, not just from 9 to 5,but 24/7,year in year out living in a glasshouse.
Even tho that glasshouse goes by the name of Drotningholm,or Haga,Victoria and Daniels future home. But I wish it will be
granted to them to fully enjoy their wedding day,and to also fully deploy their skills and abilities for the benefit of Sweden
together.

What a beautiful wedding.  It was nice seeing her brother play such a prominent role as well.  He rarely makes the magazines that I receive. He sure looks like a very young version of his father the King, does he not?
I  recently returned from 2 months in Europe. I almost wish I had stayed longer and gone to Stockholm.  Such a beautiful city. Perhaps next spring. Thanks again  Lucien.

A moving speech by Daniels father,in which he referred to the kidney transplant Daniel had.
It was his father who was the donor and donated one kidney...obviously,but he saved Daniels life with doing so last year.
Admiring the dear man very much, how brave, and what love of a parent for his son.Exemplary.

Hi,

Thank you Lucien, for this wonderful coverage of the Swedish Royal Wedding.......
As with Robert in San Francisco, we here in Calgary are getting nothing about this event;  so we are in high gratitude to you for keeping us current and with such beautiful pictures and wedding lists and identities...

Bravo,
Larry

Me too!
Nothing on tv so had to rely on watching it from here. BUT it would take up so many bytes on the computer that I'll have to watch the whole thing on youtube. Did watch the arrivals and they were beautiful.
Talk more later aswashing the car today, would rather be here

I wonder if it was the same one her great-grandmother Margaret of Connaught sailed in on after her wedding? It certainly looks like it though those photos are obviously in black & white! Beautiful tradition and luckily equally beautiful weather.  :)

Thanks for the great question Grandduchessella:

The original barge was destroyed by a fire in August 1921.  A faithful copy was built the next year and that is the one we see today.  She would have sailed in the previous Vasaorden.

Here is QE II using Vasa in 1956.

A great mix of regalness and the familial. You can sense the genuine feeling behind the largeness of the day.

Thanks for the info, Douglas. So not the one her great-grandmother used but it is the one seen in photos of GDss Marie & Prince Wilhelm.

Yes, if the photo of the Vasaorden barge is after 1923, it's the same one that was used today.  The royal barge receives a lot of TLC and is now over 85 years old.

That and over halve a million people that had taken to the streets of beautifull Stockholm,
plus the tens of millions that watched the wedding on their pc and/or tv,or both...
I know that in The Netherlands alone 4.7 million people watched,as it sort of blended in after
the football game The Netherlands - Japan at the WC in SA.(Which we won with a mere 1 - 0....).. :P.. ;D

It was the "Mother of all Royal Weddings" as far as coverage was concerned, and about everything else too
but that is maybe due,not only to the overwhelming and gracious gesture by the Bridal Couple that allowed
coverage so up close, and for soo long, but the sense as if all of us were actually present because of that, and all
we did miss was a real piece of that fantastic weddingcake, other then that,we had everything, beyond expectations
for all of us on regardless which Board or Forum,(not to mention the over 10.000 that followed this specifiv thread alone)
one followed all.It was One Big Joy for all,and that was soo special,I would love for it to linger on for a long long time.

It was a lovely wedding I saw some preparations when my parents and I went in to get my late present and I saw the whole thing on TV even if I wished now I would have been there standing salute the Crown Princess and the Prince when they come down on there way to Galliervarvet. Well it is easy to regret it now and I think our Swedish scout was lovely standing there saluting them as they arrived saying this is I myself am a scout. Even all the people that was helping made a really great job and everything was so lovely and happy.
May our Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel have a joyful and wonderful life.

yes,Thomas, it`s weird for me that a personal fitness trainer suddely becomes prince consort. i think that the whole idea of royalty is about being different from ordinary citizens of a given country. they are royal because of their birth and ubringing. a former fitness instructor is like me or any other ordinary citizen. when an olimpic games hostess (silvia sommerlath ,the future queen of sweden) or the owner of fitness clubs suddenly become royal i feel confused. i feel that  genuine royal blood is somehow dissolved by the new blood. if we follow this assumption we can say that crown princess victoria is only 1/2 royal, while her prospective children will be only 1/8 royal. so what is the sense of having a royal house whose blood is not royal at all? being royal is being somehow superior, superior i a sense of birth and upbringig.and all of sudden taxpayers have to finance lavish lifestyle of commoners or halfcommoners. mette marit of norway is a plain girl, former single mother whose exboyfried was implicated in a crime. if she was an ordinary citizen i wouldn`t even pay attention to these details but bearing in mind WHAT ROLE she plays as well as her future as queen consort i am somewhat shocked.i know that modern royal houses REIGN but DON`T RULE but still i can`t accept these rapidly changing standars

Wow! All I wanted to do was congratulate the newlyweds on a beautiful day, regardless of anyone's background and two lectures follow my comment disparaging the commoner spouses of current royalty. Nice.

The first Bernadotte, Jean Baptiste, was a commoner, too. A revolutionary from France. So the whole dynasty is pretty much a mix of royal blood and commener blood.
I think for the Swedish people it´s a right choice. Because they want a royal house, which is down-to-earth.

The Manuel's of Bavaria and the Heriditary Princely couple of Sachsen,Prince Hubertus and Princess Kelly,
from the house the brides grandmother Princess Sybilla came from.No-one was snubbed really.

And of course many of her non-royal German relations (the Sommerlaths, her mother's family) were there--including in the wedding party.

As noted before, German royals included:

Prince Manuel and Princess Anna of Bavaria
 Princess and Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg
The Hereditary Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg
Princess Alexandra of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and Count Jefferson von Pfeil und Klein-Ellguth
Princess Nathalie of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg
H.R.H. Princess Birgitta and H.S.H. Dr Johann Georg, Prince von Hohenzollern
H.S.H. Prince Carl Christian von Hohenzollern and H.S.H. Princess Nicole von Hohenzollern
Mrs Désirée von Bohlen und Halbach and Mr Eckbert von Bohlen und Halbach
H.S.H. Prince Hubertus von Hohenzollern and H.S.H. Princess Ute Maria von Hohenzollern
Princess Désirée, Baroness Silfverschiöld and Baron Niclas Silfverschiöld
S.H. Erbprinz Hubertus von Sachsen- Coburgund Goth and I.H. Prinzessin Kelly von Sachsen- Coburgund Gotha

In love with her Prince... which title did he get?

Hans Kunglig Höghet Prins Daniel av Sverige, Hertig av Västergötland
HRH Prince Daniel of Sweden, Duke of Västergötland.
Oh but Ingrid, that question is already answered a zillion times in this very thread, nice of you to help out,but some might just
as well look things up themselves,Like here:

http://www.royalcourt.se/

And "former" Royal Houses  becoming more and more ordinary?Hostesses becoming Queen.Right 34 years ago
Silvia became Queen and what an asset to Sweden she is..."former"(?)...Reigning is Reigning as in Sweden, former are the Royal Houses
within germany, they ceased to function as such.I find the comment by Thomas far far more common as it shows he lacks lnowledge on the subject of Royalty

And the Hereditary Princess of Liechtenstein, born Princess of Bavaria, was also present.

As for Hubertus's relation to the bride (for the curious)

Charles Edward, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha--Sybilla--Carl Gustav--Victoria
Charles Edward, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha--Friedrich Josias--Andreas--Hubertus

And a tidbit:
The Crown Princess is wearing Queen Sofia's lace veil. It is the same veil that was worn by Crown Princess Victoria's mother, Queen Silvia, at her marriage to King Carl Gustaf in 1976. This veil was given by Queen Sofia to her youngest son, Prince Eugen. Prince Eugen then passed the veil on to Princess Sibylla, who wore it under a garland of myrtle at her marriage to Prince Gustaf Adolf in Koburg in 1932. Queen Sofia's veil was also worn by the Princesses Désirée in 1964, Margaretha in 1964 and Christina in 1974.

Georg Friederick is not on the guest list. Interesting as the highest ranking German royal.

Also interesting is the guest list is in order of the immediate royal and groom's famillies, then other royals listed by country in alphabetical order. Even the word "former" is in alphabetic position. All except "germany", which is listed last. Is that due to the fact the Germans are actually not legal title holders?

He might very well have been invited, but ,as I said before he might,or guests might have declined for one reason or another. That happens. That's OK.

Btw,there is no specific or special bond between him and Crown Princess Victoria, there are so many loose royals in germany but only a few can call
themselves family friends.Besides,Hansi was there,a Hohenzollern who took the honneurs, and is close as HM The King as he is his  brother in law.

yes, indeed. A peak at the past that plays out before our eyes. In spite of any debate on the value or non-value of royalty, this event and others like it serve to give us a beautiful sampling of history that has so affected where and who we are today, imho.

Sweden’s crown princess gives birth to her first child, a baby girl

STOCKHOLM — Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria gave birth to her first child early Thursday, a baby girl who will be groomed to one day become the country’s queen.

Victoria’s husband, Prince Daniel, said the girl, who is second in line to the Swedish throne, was born at 4:26 a.m. (0326 GMT) at the Karolinska University Hospital in Solna, a suburb of Stockholm. She was 20 inches (51 centimeters) long and weighed 7.23 pounds (3.28 kilograms).

“When I left the room the little princess was sleeping on her mother’s chest and they were looking very cozy,” an emotional Daniel told reporters. “The little daughter and the crown princess are doing very well.”

Victoria, 34, is next in line to the throne held by her father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, since 1973. Sweden changed the constitution in 1980, three years after Victoria was born, to allow the eldest heir to inherit the throne, regardless of gender. Before that female heirs were excluded.

Daniel said the king and Victoria’s mother, Queen Silvia, had been informed of the birth and “are very happy.”

Victoria married Daniel, a commoner and her former personal trainer, in June 2010. In August last year, the Royal Court announced that Victoria was pregnant.

Sweden’s top news sites proclaimed the royal birth with bold headlines Thursday, as TV stations broadcast live from the hospital. The Royal Court made the announcement on its website and, in a modern touch, on its Facebook page.

As is custom when an heir to the throne is born, the Swedish Armed Forces were to celebrate the news with two 21-gun salutes at noon in Stockholm and other cities around Sweden.

The country had eagerly awaited the announcement all night after the Royal Court confirmed after midnight that Victoria had checked in to the hospital.

Daniel said he was “pretty nervous” during the birth and that he cut the baby’s umbilical cord. The king will announce the girl’s name later this week, he said.

Like in neighboring Scandinavian countries, Sweden’s monarch is primarily a figurehead, representing the country as the head of state but with powers limited to ceremonial functions. One of the Swedish monarch’s most prominent duties is to hand out the prestigious Nobel Prizes at the annual award ceremony in December.

Victoria is widely admired by Swedes for being down-to-earth and unassuming. It’s not uncommon to see her and Prince Daniel venture out of their lakeside palace for a stroll in a nearby public park, with security guards in tow.

Dr. Lennart Nordstrom, who was present during the delivery, said there were no complications. The royal couple had specifically requested that they should not receive any special treatment, he said.

“Both the crown princess and Daniel have been adamant that they should receive the same care as everyone else,” Nordstrom told The Associated Press.

The royal family in general, and Victoria in particular, are highly popular in Sweden, which helps explain why the centuries-old monarchy has survived even though the concept of inherited privilege runs counter to the egalitarian character of modern Swedish society.

However, voices calling for a republic have been emboldened in recent years following the scandal surrounding an unauthorized biography of the king in 2010, with claims of seedy night club visits and an extramarital affair.

A close friend of the king caused him further embarrassment when he was caught on tape negotiating with mobsters in an apparent attempt to keep unflattering information about the king’s entourage from the public eye.

The Swedish monarchy rests on traditions stretching back to the end of the Viking age, more than 1,000 years ago, but the current dynasty was founded in 1810, when French marshal Jean Baptiste Bernadotte was elected as successor to the throne.

Here it is in English:

Quote
We would be extremely grateful if all those who have contacted us regarding gifts to mark Princess Estelle's first birthday would consider making a donation to our foundation.

The aim of the foundation is to promote good health and to combat exclusion among children and young people in Sweden — issues that are particularly close to our hearts.

 With our warmest thanks!

В день именин кронпринцессы Виктории, 12 марта, ее дочь принцесса Эстель получила в качастве подарка от лейб-гвардии лошадку-качалку.

On Crown Princess Victoria's name day, the 12th of March, her daughter Princess Estelle received a rocking horse as a quality? gift from the Life Guards.

Ah, a rocking horse on the name day "ot Leib-Gvardii...." - one does become nostalgic for a certain long-gone empire...... (Whereas on the other hand, the presence of female gvardeytsy and female heirs certainly shows that this is quite another world.)

HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden gave birth to a son,Prince Oscar Carl Olf,Duke of Skane,.

The names are Oscar Carl Olof.
Oscar and Carl are of course traditonal Bernadotte names, with Carl also being the baby's grandfather, the King. Olof, the Swedish form of Olav, patron saint of Norway, is Daniel's second name and the full form of the baby's maternal grandfather's name Olle.

His title is hertig av Skåne, Duke of Scania, герцог Сконе.

Skåne (pronunciation: [ˈskoːˈnɛ]) / Scania is one of the most prestigeous Swedish dukedoms, considering the size and population of the province and the fact that it was a separate kingdom for some decades in the Middle Ages (1332–1360) when the much-maligned King Magnus Eriksson of Sweden and Norway (sodomite and ungodly king according to St. Birgitta of Vadstena and evil Catholic crusader according to Russian legend) bought the mortgaged (at that time Danish) Scania from the Count of Holstein, to whom the King of Denmark had mortgaged it (together with the rest of his realm to another Count of Holstein). The grateful Scanians, saved from the terror and corruption of the German sheriffs, gladly elected him king.

Sweden's first historically documented and Christian king was called Olof (Skötkonung, died ca. 1022) and the last Swedish prince called Olof was indeed the last male of the Folkung dynasty: Olof / Olav, King of both Norway, Denmark and (pretender / heir of) Sweden, grandson of King Magnus Eriksson and son of Queen Margrethe of the Kalmar Union, died 17 years old unmarried and heirless of a lung infection at Falsterbo in Scania in 1387.

Royal #metoo in Sweden!
Swedish newspapers report that Crown Princess Victoria was harassed by Jean-Claude Arnault, French-Swedish photographer, theatre director and general leading personality on the cultural scene. He allegedly put his hand on her rear during an official function in 2007. This was observed by several others, including the King (himself allegedly guilty of similiar behaviour with waitresses), who tasked the Secretary of the Swedish Academy with preventing Arnault from ever being alone with the Crown Princess.

The revelation comes connected to a huge scandal where Arnault, married to Swedish Academy member Katarina Frostenson, is accused of large-scale corruption (including selling the Swedish Academy's choice of Nobel Laureate in Literature to the media before the official announcement for seven years) and harassing a number of women connected to the Academy. Several members of the Swedish Academy have resigned in protest due to internal quarrels, the King has been brought in to restore order (as the academy's high protector) and it's unsure if the Academy will be able to name a Nobel Laureate in Litterature this year!
