Post by: Imperial.Opal on June 12, 2005, 04:16:07 PM

Hi Stephan,

I believe you are talking about the figures titled: "A Boy Playing At Knucklebones" by N. Pimenov and "A Boy Playing Svayka" by A. Loganovsky. The figures in front of the palace are cast in iron. There are versions of the statues (I don't recall what material they are made of) in the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the information on the statues,is svayka a russian game.Regards Stephen  :)

I'm not sure if svayka originated as a Russian game. According to a footnote in an edition of "War and Peace", svayka is described as a game where a large-head nail or spike was thrown from a distance with the goal of getting it inside of an iron ring.

I also found Loganovsky's statue alternately titled "A Boy Playing Handfid" in a small booklet on the Alexander Palace.

Perhaps,  someone will have more information on this.

I made a travelogue of my trip to Tsarskoe Selo this summer, and the pictures include a lot of AP exteriors, including the park. Take a look, here is the link:

The photos are remarkable!  Particularly when placed side by side with historical photos.  Thank you!

There is a brief description of the statues on the Tsarskoe Selo site:

http://www.alexanderpalace.org/tsarskoe/alexanderpalace.html

"On the colonnade are two bronze statues; the "Babochnik" and the "Svaechnik", which represent players at two ancient Russian games "babki" and "svaika". These figures are made by the Russian sculptors, Pimenov and Loganovsky."

Also found these definitions on the internet; perhaps someone has a better explanation:

Babki - The name of a children’s game similar to Pick-Up-Stix, but played with old soup bones.

Svaika - a 19th century game involving throwing a heavy iron spike through an iron ring.  The game resembles quoits, an ancient version of horseshoes.

I am now very curious about both games!

Londo, I just checked the link, they all seem to be fine. Maybe try again? Occasionally something happens at Imageshack and some of the photos don't come through, but later they return...

Scott, did you by any chance get a photo of the inscriptions beneath the statues (Pushkin's poetry about them)? I wanted to photograph them so that I could translate them later, but as I mentioned earlier, my digital camera broke almost immediately after I got to Russia and it wouldn't have worked with a regular camera... I hope you have them!

Are they any phots taken comapring today with contemporary ones? Such as Peter Kurth did in his book. I think it would be interesting to see the Palace today and comapre to what it looks like now. Granted the itnerior shots would be rather boring since the rooms are not restored but it would still be interesting.to try repeat some of the shots.

I did some of that in my travelogue, with contemporary paintings and photos. I don't think that all that many pre-revolutionary photos of the AP exist...

Here are two that I don't think I included in the travelogue:

Hmm... perhaps it has something to do with your internet connection? I can see them here and also on the webpage. If you would like to see them, PM me, and I can send them to you in another way.

Post by: pastpalacelife on December 01, 2006, 11:17:01 PM
Has anyone seen the actual film of Alexis mounting his horse in front of the semi circle rear?  I have looked at the still pictures, but had no idea a film existed!  It's on YOU Tube, labeled "Russia5"   by user jejr2003. I found this fascinating to see that part of the palace as it was, and comparing that with today's pictures.  Does anyone know if other snippets of video such as this exist, and if so where to find them?  I know there's plenty of the Imperial Family at official functions, but this is great because its actually at the Alexander Palace!!

Does anyone know who took these home movies and if there are more like this?  I am surprised movies survived.  I mean, they could have been stored in the attic and gotten too hot or the basement and gotten wet?!  Does Bob A. know the history of home movies with the Imperial Family?   thanks

Most of the pictures are new to me, and they are wonderful to see. Keep posting.

Also, I think we all would love to see more pictures of the right wing.  I for one have always wondered if any pictures exist of Alexander III and Marie Feodorovna's rooms in the right wing! Let's hope some turn up someday!

Pastpalacelife,

They're all new to me and thanks for posting them. The elevated view of the Palace in reply 35 gives an excellent perspective of the AP in the park and looking toward the town. Also liked Olga's christening departure pic. Unfortunately no identifiable individuals can be seen.
A question: what's the date of those photos showing ongoing repair work? I'm thinking 1945-1955?  :) :)

When I see these poor women toiling over the recreation of the balustrade, I could weep.   At least one third of these balusters have collapsed.    Not, of course, due to war or enemy incursion - rather sheer neglect.   The decay and destruction of the Alexander Palace is nothing less than a case of state vandalism.   The one million dollars, generously donated by a Russian oligarch, will barely cover the costs of the restoration of the balustrade.

The fireplace in pastpalacelife's last photograph is in the Mountain Hall.   It exists minus the embellishments.

Hi Tsaria and friends...I  suspect the blaustrade was made of wood (actually a wood center piece that was covered with plaster).  This is a big mistake.  The shaped pieces should be made of a more durable material.

I would suggest they should be  made of cast resin (plastic product) or stone.  Even a type of cast waterproof  concrete would be better.   This is a decoration that should be made to last more than 100 years.

Trying to repairs things on the cheap costs you more in the long term.

The Palace on the side not lived in by Nicholas II and Alexandra Feodorovna is in a terrible state. It really needs urgent attention. Thankfully the winter of 2006/2007 was not a harsh one by Russian standards. I was there in January and very few tourists were in the Alexander Palace. I think it is left off the official tours list sadly like Gatchina. I hope something can be done to repair the exterior of the Palace urgently.

I just want to thank you for the many beautiful pictures. It has been the dream of my life to see St Petersburg and the Alexander Palace but it's not looking very possible.  Your pictures are the next best thing!  Thanks again

This is the first time I have ever seen an aerial view of the AP with Children's Island.  It is so nice to see it in relation to the palace.  Thank you so much for this delightful - and completely unexpected - surprise, Joanna.
