Title: Sharing pictures of Romanov related places...
Post by: Helen_Azar on June 03, 2004, 11:24:28 AM
I wasn't sure where this topic belongs, so I also posted this message under "Alexander Palace interiors", sorry about that...

Bob (or anyone else who can answer this),

Last week I got back from St Petersburg and many other ancient Russian cities (in the Golden Ring region), where I of course visited The Alexander Palace and some other very interesting Romanov-related places. I have some photos that I would like to share by posting them for those who are interested to view. Would you please tell me if I can do that on this site and how. I have some good pictures of Alexander Palace interiors, as well as the grounds, and among other pictures I also have pictures of the inside of the Ipatiev monastery where the Romanov Dynasty "originated". I also have pictures of Rasputin-related places and many many others that could be of interest to the members. If anyone is interested in seeing these and hearing my account of the visit there, you can also contact me via  my email address: mushkah@yahoo.com.

I loved all of the pictures. Where were you allowed in the Yussupov Palace, exactly? So great to see all of those people celebrating Nicky's birthday. I loved the family photo of "Lenin, Nicholas and Karl Marx!"

JM,

In reply to your question about the Yussupov Palace, the Palace tour guides offer instant group tours of the palace every hour or so, where they bring you all over the main palace including the private theater, which was my favorite part. The tour of "Rasputin" basement is separate from the main palace tour. Apparently the Yussupov palace was one of the few nobility palaces in St Petersburg that had special protection after the revolution and therefore was wholly preserved from destruction along with most of its original contents!

You should write a "recent visits" page and we can post the photographs there - you were the latest person to visit and your account would be GREAT! †What do you think??

I sent it as a "private message", maybe that feature doesn't work... Basically I just said that Bob suggested I contact you to ask about posting an account of my visit to AP and some pictures. I was hoping you could tell me where to post it and how... Thanks.

Angie,

Apparently there was some problem with the images earlier today, but it seems to have cleared up now. It may take a couple of minutes for all the pictures to show up, but they are there. If you continue to have problems, Rob Moshein (the administrator) was the one working on this, so you may want to let him know. Thanks.

Me and husband just got back from a two week stay in St. Petersburg. Granted, we're still fighting jetlag and general exhaustion from our vacation (my word "this ain't no resting vacation!")

I haven't yet had a chance to look at my photos. We took around two hundred digital photos and I also purchashed around 20 books with unique photos in them.

Anyway, I'd love to share what we saw when we were there. I took extensive photos of the old private rooms in the Winter Palace and some at the Alexander Palace.

A big thanks to Bob Atchison, b/c without this site, I'm not sure that I would have ever been inclined to visit the fabulous, wonderful city of St. Petersburg!!!!!

*Sigh* I just downloaded all the photos I took on the trip and discovered that my camera is an utter piece of #$@!@$%$. Of the 200 plus photos I took, only 20 or so are salvagable.  I'm really, really, really disappointed- but at least I still have my memories, no?

On a plus note, I still have the wonderful books I purchased while we were there (Thank GOD!) Contained inside these books are some really interesting photos of the family and interiors such as more of the "coach" rooms of the Imperial train that I had never seen before. I'll be spending the next few days scanning these pictures and will share these with you all.

ARG!!!! This sucks. On the very last day before we left we discovered that we couldn't find our "good" camera that takes film (advantix)  so we were forced to take my old digital camera. We also had one other camera that takes film- oh how I wish we had taken that camera instead... :-(

A very sad Amy signing off.  :'(

Hello everyone,

For those of you who didn't get this link and haven't seen my pictures and comments, they have been posted at: http://www.alexanderpalace.org/palace/helenvisit.html

Amy, I can totally relate to your frustration, on my last trip to St Pete five years ago I used a cool new camera I just got, took about 6 or 7 rolls of film, and NONE of the pictures came out!!! I don't know if it was the film or the camera itself, I was so upset that I never used that camera again, and bought a good digital one instead. Some of these pictures would have been such gems, but what can you do???  ??? I totally commiserate with you...

I know, it so sad. I was pretty devestated when I finally had a chance to look at them yesterday. :'(

Here's a link to one example. (I'd imbed the photo for future viewing, except I'll probally take this worthless photo down some time in the future.)

http://home.comcast.net/~kidwells/BlurryAmy.jpg

It's sad, blurry me on the steps leading into the last family's wing. Actually, I was super happy at the time, only now I'm sad. And pissed at my camera. I know it's crazy to be mad at an inanimate object, but seeing as the same thing happened to you, you can probally imagine what I'm going through.

Your pictures are excellent. Thank you for the link! I remember reading about your trip before I left, but didn't have the time to investigate your write-up in detail.

Amy, I was so mad at my camera that I couldn't even look at it for months and then I just threw it away! But I am over it now and I have a bunch of great new pictures from my recent trip. Besides, this gives you an excuse to come back to St Pete, as it did for me  ;D

Amy, oh so sorry to hear about your camera! How awful!! Before ive had problems with the flash on very important objects eg. behind glass, or its blurred on locations and i was so very very disappointed!
But we will all be delighted with anything you'd like to post, and those photos from the books sound amazing!!
Perhaps you could write some reminiscences though like Helenazar did? †:)

Looking forward to your scan photos!!! :)
The train ones are lovely.

I would like to make a suggestion. First off hi to all my friends, for  during the first new letter back in the late 90ís I had written a small article.  Itís been sometime. But Iíve never really been that far out of touch. This month coming Iíll be taking a trip to St. Petersburg "work related" accordingly Iím taking a few extra days  for my own exploring. Iím taking along with me two cameras One a Nikon 35m long range zoom and wide angle zoom lens to accompany that Iím also taking a  Canon PowerShot 5.0-Megapixel Digital Camera. Even though Iím going in the dead of winter. I do plan on snapping until my finger can no longer snap.

Itís my second visit to my great grandmothers birthplace. The first was again purely work-related. Which left me only a half day  to visit TS. My great-grandmother  was born and lived somewhere on Malaya Ul. Although we are not precisely sure of the home or the number. If anyone would like specific photos Iíll do me best to make sure that they are taken. J. Bettano.
