Title: Louisa and Elisabeth of Thurn und Taxis
Post by: MarieCharlotte on September 14, 2005, 02:54:19 AM
Hallo,

I am searching for pictures of Louisa and Elisabeth of Thurn und Taxis, daughters of Helene (Néne), née Duchess in Bavaria, and Maximilian of Thurn und Taxis.

Thanks a lot ...

Marie  ;)

Best I could do for now, their mother Helene (Nene) of Bavaria:

Thanks cimbrio, but I am absolutely sure that this woman is NOT Helene in Bavaria. You found it on the royaltyguide website, didn't you?  ;)

And thank you, Danjel, for this nice picture of Elisabeth ...

Hehehe Actually you're probably right, I just searched in google images :D  though she seemed a bit odd, since her bone structure of her face didn't seem the same as the other pics of Nene I've seen. What happened to these two princesss Marie Charlotte? There must be a reason you're interested in them....

I have seen that photo of helene in the Royal Diary of Sisi though.  It was identified as Helene in that book.

Helen was thought to be the beauty of her family but I think she turned out to be the least attractive of the Bavarian sisters  :-/

You are right. Marie Redwitz, a lady in waiting of Helene's niece Amélie in Bavaria, wrote that Helene didn't care about her appearance (dress, hair, etc.). She was said to be a very sloppy, chaotic person.
She was the only one of her sisters who became thick in old age.

I've dug out a picture. The caption says :"Prince and Princess Friedrich de Hohenzollern".

Well, I think they are Luisa Taxis and her husband Friedrich of Hohenzollern...Anyway "Luisa" has a resemblance to Luisa that Agneschen posted.

I think you are right Svetabel. I have a pic of Prince Friedrich somewhere and this man looks very much like him.

Recently I  have dug in my extracts from various memories and bios of the Royal persons and found out an interesting episode about Luise of Hohenzollern ,nee Thurn und Taxis. If retelling shortly then the story is how Empress Augusta, spouse of Wilhelm I , was mixing in the matters of other people.
Young Luise arrived at Berlin as a bride and went to have a good entertaining. One evening she was going to put on her dress and suddenly noticed that the décolletage of her dress had been altered! She asked her maid and frightened girl told that the Empress ordered to alter the dress as she had considered such décolletage a shocking one. (Princess Luise was known as a very elegant woman, who loved looking  fashionably). So, infuriated Luise gave her maid a good scolding for not asking her about altering and made the girl re-altered the dress. After this Luise said to Augusta that she had tried  on her dresses in front of her mother (Helene, sister of Sissi) and mother approved Luise’s clothes. Old Empress had to hold her tongue. :)

I believe this T&T beauty might have come especially from Erbprinz Maximilian's mother Fürstin Wilhelmine, née Freiin von Dörnberg...but the Dss in Bavaria also had good looks...

Elisabeth's children were quite beautiful...they had more handsome looks than the children of the Duke of Bragança's second marriage...

There are different versions of that book. In my hardcover version the author writes: "Helene as bride of Maximilian of Thurn und Taxis."

The dress is a typical example of medieval costumes of the Historicism. Medieval motifs & forms were combined with corset and crinoline. This special belt served almost as sign of 'Medievality' on stages & fancy dress balls.
And also wedding dresses looked different in the 19th century. Low-necked and richly decorated dresses like this were only accepted for evenings and (fancy dress) balls.
It's deceptive, that dresses with the silhouette of evening dresses from the 1850s-1860s are very popular as wedding dresses today.

Eric, I was wrong!  ;) I just searched for photos of Elisabeth of T&T in the so-called "Zettelkatalog" of the Bildarchiv in Vienna. They have only six photos of her, but one pictures shows Elisabeth together with her sister Louisa.
The photo has a "NB number" which means that somebody has already ordered a copy of this photo.

So, let's go to Vienna!  :D

It is possible to visit the Bildarchiv of the Nationalbibliothek in Vienna. There you can look at rare CDVs of almost everybody. On the website of the Nationalbibliothek you can read the descriptions of the photos under the category "Zettelkatalog".  ;)

Yes, I've been there.  :D Everybody at the Bildarchiv is very nice and tries to help you. The amount of money you have to pay for copies depends on the size. Copies which have a NB number, which means that someone else has already bought a copy of a certain CDV, are much cheaper than copies of CDVs that don't have such a number.

I read in John C. G. Röhls book about Wilhelm II. that Friedrich Sigmaringen had a long affair with a Elisabeth Wedel and that they had two children, a boy and a girl. The affair was in the 70s and he married in 1879 Louisa.
He seems very suspicious to me.

No, it´s not Hitler. I know he looks like him. But many men wore this mustache at this time. It is a photo from 1933, when Hitler became chancellor.

You can see also Friedrich Viktor of Sigmaringen.

Yes, this was an strange fashion, but certainly that Hitler wasn't the only one who used it, or invented it

But this Coburg nose is so terrible like the Habsburg lips. I think Luisa had this from Helene. On portraits you can see that she hadn´t a little nose. Like sister Maria. She had a big one!

Off topic but let's remember that the infamous Coburg nose was originally an Orléans nose thanks to dear Clémentine... :-)

And the Orléans nose seems to come originally from Clementine's mother, Queen Marie Amelie who in turn inherited from her father, Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies, known as "Re Nasone" , King Big Nose.

Christina, sister of King Carl Gustav of Sweden wore a Tiara that reminds me of one that Luisa had on a photo. Is this maybe the same Tiara?
Christinas sister Brigitta married a prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, and you know that Luisa was married into the H-Sigmaringer family, too. Maybe that´s the Tiara and Christina borrowed it.
Any help? Thanks!

The photo of Luisa is not so good, sorry.

They had the thought that if Leopold didn´t want the throne of Spain Friedrich Eugen should take it. But he didn´t want to.
How interesting would that had been:

King Friedrich Eugen of Spain with Queen Louisa
King Miguel II. of Portugal with Queen Elisabeth
and if the plan had worked a King Friedrich Christian of Poland with Queen Elisabeth Helene

Three Thurn und Taxis Queens! A pity it wasn´t so.

FE was more a homely man. An "adventure" like Spain wasn´t attractive to him.
I can understand. But hey a Queen Louisa.  ;D

Absolutely ! Look what happen to the Kings later on who get driven from their thrones or assasinated.
