Title: Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxemburg
Post by: cimbrio on August 09, 2005, 06:00:08 PM
On Grand Duchess Charlotte Adelgonde of Luxemburg: (ta wiki and ta Prince!)

Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg, Charlotte Aldegonde Élise Marie Wilhelmine (January 23, 1896 - July 9, 1985) was the second daughter of Grand Duke William IV of Luxembourg. When her older sister Grand Duchess Marie-Adélaïde, who had succeeded the father, was forced to abdicate on January 14, 1919, Charlotte became the one who had to deal with the revolutionary tendencies in the country. Contrary to her sister, she chose not to meddle with its politics.

In a referendum about the new constitution on September 28, 1919, 77.8% of the Luxembourgish people voted for the continuation of a Grand Ducal monarchy with Charlotte as head of state. In this constitution, the power of the monarch was severely restricted.

During the German occupation in World War II, Charlotte, exiled in London, became an important symbol of national unity.

On November 6, 1919, she married Prince Felix of Bourbon-Parma, and they had six children:

   * Grand Duke Jean.
   * Princess Elizabeth (born 1922), who married HSH Duke Franz von Hohenberg (1927 - 1977). Has issue.
   * Princess Marie-Adélaide (born 1924), who married Karl, Count Henckel von Donnersmarck (born 1928).
   * Princess Marie Gabriele (born 1925), who married Knud, Count of Holstein-Ledreborg (1919 - 2001). Has issue.
   * Prince Charles (1927 - 1977), who married commoner Joan Dillon. Had issue.
   * Princess Alix (born 1929), who married Anton, Prince of Ligne.

On November 12, 1964, she abdicated in favour of the eldest, Prince Jean, who had then been regent for three years.

Charlotte died on July 9, 1985, from cancer.

What do you know about Grand Duchess Charlotte's life ? Did she was a popular sovereign in Luxemburg ? Did she loved her spouse prince Felix of Bourbon Parma and did she was a good mother for their six children ? Infos and pics are welcome, thanks.

Yes, she was very lovely.  THe above link has expired since the forum moved, so here is a link to a website with lots of pictures:
http://worldroots.com/brigitte/royal/charluxembourg1896album.htm

I always thought it was curious that Charlotte was the only blonde one.  All her other sisters had dark, think, wavy hair and her's was blonde and straight.  Just the luck of the draw or did she have some childhood disease or something that prevented her hair from growing like it was supposed to (like her sisters)? :-?

I think that her younger sister, Elisabeth, was too blonde. Charlotte and Elisabeth ressembled their mother Grand Duchess Marie Anne, a fair-complexioned woman, while the others girls (Marie Adelheid, Hilda, Antonia and Sophie) more ressembled her father who was a dark man.

I don't think Elisabeth was blonde, here is a picture of her very young

and she has dark hair.  Also, if you see any pictures of all six of the sisters together, Charlotte stands out as being the only blonde one.

Don't forget it's a black and white picture, so it's difficult to affirm that she had dark hair ! If you look photos of Charlotte as a young woman, you can notice that she had same hair colour than Elisabeth. Now Charlotte, as a little girl or as an adult, was always blonde.

KarlandZita, thanks for posting the beautiful and stunning pictures of Grandduchess Charlotte. She and her 5 sisters had been beautiful women. I had seen some pictures of them in "Royalty Between The Wars" by William Mead Lalor.

From that book I learned that Grandduchess Charlotte had an elder sister, Grandduchess Marie-Adelaide. She was born in 1894 and suceeded her father, Grandduke Guilliaume in 1912. She was convinced to be sovereign by divine right and therefore meddled into the political affairs of the grand duchy. After WWI she was accused of a pro-German stance. IN 1919 she was persuaded to abdictate in order to preserve the monarchy and was succeeded by Charlotte. She was forced to leave Luxemburg and became a nun. As far as I know she died in 1924.

I am interested in the relationship between Charlotte and her sister Marie-Adelaide after she left Luxemburg. Does anybody know whether they had any contact? Has anybody more information about her?

How was the relationship between Carlotte and her four younger sisters, Hilda Princess Adolph of Schwarzenberg, Antonia Crown Princess of Bavaria, Sophie Princess Ernest Heinrich of Saxony and Elizabeth Princess Louis-Philipp of Thurn and Taxis'? Does anybody have information about them?

Thanks, Gabriella.

Beautiful pictures, some of which are unpublished. Charlotte was really a great lady as there were still many in the early twentieth century.

For me, The last great lady of this generation (those born in the last years of the nineteenth century) was the Empress Zita of Austria, disappeared in 1989.

Fantastic Dru!

Absolutely gorgeous woman!

Yes, Charlotte was undoubtedly a very beautiful woman, kind and distinguished. However, I think she did not keep her freshness for a long time and until 1925, she seemed older than she really was. No doubt that motherhood, Charlotte has had 6 children, was partly the cause of early maturity.

I know that Charlotte and her family spent their WWII exile in London and Canada.  From what I understand, the official government in exile was in Montreal.  The future Grand Duke Jean and several of his siblings continued their education at Laval University in Quebec City (along with their Austrian Imperial cousins), but Charlotte and Felix seemed to divide their time between London and Canada.  What was the reason for this division of the family and the government?  How much did time Charlotte and Felix spend in both London and Canada?

Did Elisabeth attend Laval University in Quebec City?  I know she attended high school there (at the Collège Jésus-Marie) during WWII with her cousin, Elisabeth of Austria.  The school was (and perhaps still is) associated with Laval.  Future Grand Duke Jean attended Laval, as did several of Zita's children.

At the time of their wedding, the marriage of Charlotte and Felix of Parma was deeply unpopular.  The effects of WWI on the duchy (Marie Adelaide's abdication, the German occupation, etc.) and Felix's position in the Austrian army was most certainly not well-received.  Evidently there was a large crowd gathered at the cathedral before the wedding, but most of the people in the crowd watched the procession of the couple "in silence."  Ouch.

Does anyone know how long it look for Charlotte to be received in the country as ruler and Felix as consort?  It seems as though the couple were fairly steady, if a bit obscure.

This is a good point. Charlotte and Felix married on 6 November 1919, not quite a year after the Armistice, when memories of the German occupation must have been absolutely raw.

A quick check of wikipedia shows that the two were first cousins through their mothers, who were both daughters of King Miguel I of Portugal, but (naughty thought here!) two of Felix's numerous brothers, Xavier and Sixtus, had served in the Belgian Army in WW1, which would have made them much less controversial candidates! Sixtus married in March 1919 but Xavier did not marry until 1927. Another brother, Rene, also served in the Austrian Army. Perhaps Charlotte just preferred Felix, despite the complications!

Became Grand Duchess of Luxembourg in 1919, in place of her sister Marie Adelaide who was suspected of sympathy for Germany, Charlotte suffered pressure from the Allies to marry a prince who is neither German nor Germanophile. Felix of Bourbon-Parma filled the wishes of allies and even if it is an arranged marriage by the events of the time, I assumed that this union proved successful over time.

She wears the tiara that Grand Duchess Elizabeth Mikhailovna had brought into the Nassau family when she married Adolph, Duke of Nassau (later Grand Duke of Luxemboug). Elizabeth died in childbirth--the child with her--very early in the marriage. Having left no descendants of her own, the tiara is rather her legacy to the family.

It probably is an Austrian uniform since Felix was a lieutenant and captain in the Austrian Dragoons. He resigned in November 1918 and exactly a year later he married Charlotte. From what I understand the marriage wasn't that well received because of Felix's background but I guess they were won over later.

I really don't quite understand, Marie-Adelaide lost her throne because of perceived friendliness with Germans yet Charlotte MARRIES an AUSTRIAN lieutenant/captain, brother of the deposed Austrian Empress, and still gets to rule. I guess Marie-Adelaide lost cause she butted in politics and the German thing was an front excuse from politicians to get rid of her but if I were Marie-Adelaide I would be a bit pissed off.

Also in the last 2 photos I notice a real similarity between Charlotte and Olga Nikolaevna. Pretty amazing considering I don't think there was any close relations since the Catholic monarchies married each other and not others.

According to The Nassaus of Luxembourg, Charlotte and Felix's engagement "...was announced one month before the armistice on October 6, 1918, but proved somewhat controversial.  The Habsburgs had given the Bourbon-Parmas political asylum after their duchy was incorporated into the Savoy-controlled kingdom of Italy, and Felix felt obligated to offer his services to the Austrian empire during the war, though with the understanding that he would not fight on the French front as the Bourbon-Parmas considered themselves first and foremost French princes who just happened to have reigned in Italy (Pollock 66-67)."

The book goes on to say that "In June of 1915, it had been mistakenly reported that the prince had been one of the first of his unit to enter Przemysl, a disputed fortress on the Serbian front, which did not sit well with the overwhelmingly pro-Allied sympathies of the Grand Duchy.  Felix was too proud to plead his own cause, but Marie-Adelaide was quick to defend him to her government. Dear God, now this good boy has to take the blame.  Gentlemen, I can assure you that Prince Felix is such a charming person and in a heartbeat he would win the heart of all the Luxembourgers.. (66)"

After Marie-Adelaide's abdication, Charlotte's marriage was still the subject of some controversy, but her younger sisters would have been "equally unacceptable" as rulers, so Charlotte was named Marie-Adelaide's sucessor.

From the way you say it, it really sounds like Charlotte lucked out that all of her younger sisters were considered "equally unacceptable" as rulers as well.

Was it possible if one of the younger siblings married a non-German Charlotte would have been forced out as well?

It's possible.  Hilda was considered instead of Charlotte (her engagement to the Duke of Wurttemberg had been broken already), but she refused the job of grand duchess.  Antonia's marriage to the Crown Prince of Bavaria had already been postponed due to anti-German sentiment; Marie-Adelaide then suggested Elisabeth as her successor, but the government rejected this proposal because they did not want another regency under Grand Duchess Maria Anna, and Sophie would have been ineligible for the same reason.

I believe the people of Luxembourg voted to keep the monarchy--less than 20% of the population voted in favor of a republic--so Charlotte was sworn in.  She made it very clear in her accession speech that she would stay out of the political sphere, and her marriage to Felix was allowed because there was really no other option.

As I understand it, things worked out in the end. Charlotte had a long and successful reign, and there were no issues about Felix's loyalties in WW2. Their son Grand Duke Jean joined the Irish Guards in WW2 and was attached to the American Army in order to join the troops which liberated Luxembourg (detail from the Luxembourg Military Museum, which I visited last year).
