Title: Princess Therese of Bavaria
Post by: Prince_Christopher on May 27, 2006, 10:10:45 AM
In Prince Christopher's memoirs, he speaks of this interesting princess: "One relation who came to visit us off and on was my mother's cousin, Princess Therese of Bavaria, who amazed everyone with her erudition; she could speak twenty different languages and answered freely in any one she happened to be addressed in.  She was an extremely interesting personality, a well-known scientist and great explorer; there were few parts of the globe she had not visited, hunting for flora and fauna."

What little else I could find about her was that she was the daughter of Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria and Archduchess Auguste of Austria.

She was born in Munich in 1850 and died in 1925.  She apparently never married.

She had 3 brothers: King Ludwig III of Bavaria, who married Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria, Princess of Modena; Prince Leopold of Bavaria who married the Archduchess Gisela; and Prince Arnulf of Bavaria, who married Princess Therese of Liechtenstein.

Between 1888 and 1898, she went on two extensive research and collecting expeditions to South America, gathering butterflies and moths.  Her collections are now in a Munich museum.

Does anyone have any other information about this lady?  I love royals who find a "purpose" or job in life, and she must have been a very interesting and intelligent person.

When Therese's mother Auguste "Gusti" died in 1864, the Princess and her brothers were still very young. Nevertheless she tried to take the place of the woman in the family. So Therese and her aunt Adelgunde of Modena ran the household for Luitpold.

Therese was in love with her cousin Otto (later King Otto I. of Bavaria). Since he has been arrested in Schloss Fürstenried in 1878, she visited him and wrote many letters. She felt very sorry for him and couldn't understand why he was treated so badly by his family. It must have been a difficult situation for her, because it was her father Luitpold who reigned instead of Otto.

I was thinking that ... if the Bavarian Monarchy was ever restored... Carolin Reiber would
make a perfect candidate for Queen of Bavaria....
She looks the part...esp in her younger days... and I believe she lives in Munich too !
