Nicholas II / The Tsar's Cigarettes
« on: August 12, 2019, 05:43:37 PM »
What did the Tsar smoke?  I've heard he had Benson and Hedges that were specially stamped with a double eagle.  Were these typical British cigarettes of the period or were they the Russian papirosa kind with the hollow mouthpiece?

Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna / Re: Ella's Health

She also either had fibroids (or endometriosis)...which is very uncomfortable to say the least !!
So this could certainly be the answer to the couple's childlessness. Perhaps her female problems were known as early as seven years into her marriage, when the Emperor AIII made the remark to the effect that he knew they would remain without children all their married lives.  Makes sense.  The Russian doctors may have seen it then.

That and, statistically, if a couple goes seven years without preventing children, it is likely that they will have had children by then or else they probably never will.

I'll admit I'm scared to watch it.

The Alexander Palace / Re: Alexander Palace Restoration
« on: April 19, 2019, 05:24:24 AM »
Hi friends

Do we know if also the childrens rooms on the upper floor ist to be restored?
I fear they are not...

Kind regards

In this article from Royal Russia, it says that they will be used for temporary exhibits. Hopefully, the rooms will at least be the same size, etc, as the original rooms, but it doesn't sound like they will look as they did when the Imperial Family lived there. :(

Rasputin / Ella's Role
« on: March 11, 2019, 07:01:29 AM »
Did Nicholas and Alexandra ever discover that Ella had encouraged Dimitri?

I know that Ella and Alix had their differences, so to speak, over the years -- but did she ever find out what her sister did to her good friend?

It's actually something I've struggled with in terms of my personal "image" of Ella.  There's Ella who opened a convent.  Ella who was made a saint.  Ella who held the hand of a dying peasant.  And then finally Ella who encouraged murder.

While the Mirror is a bit sensationalist, I have read the passage translated into English by Helen Azar -- and it is definitely true that Mathilde did at least claim to have been pregnant by Nicholas.  Even if she did later retract it.

I'm a bit surprised that I wasn't able to find this being discussed here...

Can't wait to go back to Russia to see this completed.  Just this half completed fireplace has me nearly in tears.

Imperial Transportation / Trips to the UK aboard the Standart
« on: March 09, 2019, 03:07:55 PM »
Does anyone have any detailed info about these trips?

Especially how long the voyage would be from Russia, but also details of the trips themselves. :)

When they visited was it primarily a state occasion or a family one?

Yeah AA would have been sunk from Day One in the era of DNA testing.

Plus, with how easy it is to spread info now, the fact that she didn't know so much about "her" own family's life would have been public knowledge very quickly...

Congratulations to William and Kate on the birth of their new little prince on this day, Monday, April 23, 2018!

Born on St. George's Day - this one should have been called George!

I'm sure they are glad that George is the name of a future King, though, considering that Prince George of Cambridge was named for George Vi.

After reading the seller's description, we can now add tin to the list of materials used in Faberge's workshops.

Seriously, I don't see anything about this bird made in Italy that would cause the seller - or anybody else - to embark upon such a flight of fancy re its provenance.

Um, greed?  *winks*
