Oh, yes, I can see how it is Tatiana now! The angle is so odd it was hard to tell.
I think the man is Rodionov, a Standart officer.
Thanks!

Wow, I just have to say, that photo is so remarkably clear and sharp for being from over 100 years ago when so many photos, especially candid ones such as this, had a certain fuzzy or grainy quality to them...The girl is Maria Nicholaevna, right? And is the other guy besides Tsar Nicholas anyone in particular, or just an officer?

I saw this and I wondered if the story was true, as I don't recall ever reading the anecdote. Does anyone know if it is true?

Wow! These are awesome! The girls' dresses in the lineup with their father are so pretty! Anyone know where that one (lineup) was taken? I love informal pictures of the family on the Standart and in their rooms and such because it makes them so relatable. Wherever did you find all these treasures, 'Tatiana Z'?

Olga Nicholaievna / Re: Whose Dress Is This?

It looks an awful lot like both the 1913 and 1914 formal dresses, but I compared it to photos and it matches neither. Hmm. I agree about being either Olga or Tatiana...too long for the Little Pair, it was wartime by the time they turned 16...perhaps it is from a formal occasion from which no photos exist...or of which photos do exist but are not public..

Minor trifle: I've been studying the Romanovs for years and still do not know how to pronounce Xenia.
Another way to spell it is Ksenia, so basically KS together...the best way I can think of to write the way I say it is Ksaynya...I have talked with someone who has studied Russian and had a couple lessons so I think that's the way to say it...experts feel free to correct me!

I skimmed over this just now - it looks wonderful! Like "t_co" said it's a great character sketch! I will definitely read it thru more thouroughly later. As a writer of both scripts and stories myself, I like to read other Romanov historical fiction, and this one looks excellent! It would be awesome to put it on somewhere, are you at all planning on doing that?

Alexandra Feodorovna / Re: Alexandra's Clothing; Formal and Informal

I remember reading this somewhere, and not in TSAR either, (I have never read that book, perhaps for the best if it is so innacurate!) so it must have some truth. I skimmed a bit of "Nicholas & Alexandra" and didn't see it, but perhaps I was looking too early on in the book.

Interesting, thank you! I have seen one of those before - I just never knew those were empty candy boxes! For some reason I pictured the photograph as being more informal. It strikes me as being rather funny to have such a posed, formal-ish pictures with empty sweets boxes!

This is rather off-subject, but I was exploring the Darmstadt State Archive and was wondering if they have any pictures of the interiors of the New Palace. Do they?

I read a passage in Sophie Buxhoevden's book that mentions a photo:

With many regrets and numerous boxes of sweets - a photograph taken at the time of their arrival shows them surrounded by empty boxes! - Princess Alix went back to Darmstadt.
(it was talking about the Hesses visit to Illinskoe, 1890.)

Does this photo still exist?

Beautiful and haunting...and it does seem very fitting for Sisi.

Very, very pretty collage! :) A tremendously interesting and beautiful woman was born 175 years ago today, and may she rest in peace!

I've always wondered what she is doing in that 2nd photo you posted! Anyone know?
Maybe breaking the ice? you know, how they did that with the soldiers during the war? not sure if it was during captivity that March at Tsarskoe Selo or an earlier time, but I think that's what the photo is from.

I am in search of a picture of Ella when she was sixteen...preferably at her coming-out ball, but I have a feeling no pictures exist of that occasion. So, any pictures of Ella at the age of 16...I believe the year would have been 1880...the sooner the better! much appreciated!

On Olga's birthday I forgot that it is also the anniversary of little Princess May's death on November 16th. So short a life that brought so much joy to her family. Rest in Peace!
