Forum Announcements / Tsar's Private Dacha
« on: July 02, 2006, 03:48:59 PM »
I just returned from a trip to St. Petersburg and while there the guide took me to a location called the Tsar's private dacha. There is a plaque there that says it is the birthplace of Alex. It's in ruins and has a fence around it, but if you walk towards the ocean it stops and you can walk around where it ends. I have pictures if anyone is interested. I'm not sure if this topic is a repeat or not.

Forum Announcements / Money for trip to St. Petersburg
« on: April 16, 2006, 11:21:01 PM »
I am going to St. Petersburg in June and I am not sure in what form to take money. I have heard that there are a lot of ATM's over there. I will of course have my Visa card.  Are travelers checks accepted? I am staying at a cash only Bed & Breakfast so I need funds for that and also I have a car and driver, I'm sure that will be cash as well.

Forum Announcements / Trip to Russia in June
« on: October 19, 2005, 09:32:28 PM »
So I am headed to Italy in June with my family and extended family and get to take a side trip to St. Petersburg for 4-5 days by myself.  I will be flying in to Peter on the 23rd or 24th. Flying back to Italy on the 27th or 28th.
I'm thinking I will go on a tour as I have never been there and do not speak or read Russian. The travel agent spoke of all kinds of problems by going alone, and my wife is all freaked out now. Things like hassles by the police, getting arrested, blah, blah, blah.

I plan to visit;
The Hermitage
Alexander Palace
Any other ideas from you folks?
Any Interesting war or military museums in the area?

I would prefer not to go with a tour but I do not know how to arrange for a private guide before I get there.

What kind of money should I take?
Does plastic work?
How about travelers checks?
Will my cell phone work there? I'm thinking they don't.
Any other need to know stuff?

Anyone else on the list going to be there at the same time?
