News Links / Putin dissolves Russian Government
« on: September 12, 2007, 08:24:55 AM »

MOSCOW -- President Vladimir Putin dissolved Russia's government Wednesday in a major political shakeup ahead of parliamentary and presidential elections, the Kremlin said.

The dissolution is expected to result in a new prime minister, who will be seen as Putin's choice to succeed him after he steps down next spring.
The newspaper Vedomosti, citing unidentified Kremlin officials, reported that Sergei Ivanov, a first deputy prime minister and a leading contender to succeed Putin, could be appointed to replace Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov.

Another first deputy prime minister, Dmitry Medvedev, who is a top executive at natural gas monopoly OAO Gazprom, is considered the other leading contender.

Under the constitution, Putin has two weeks to propose a new head of government, which the lower house of parliament, the State Duma, then has a week to vote on. Russian news agencies said Fradkov would serve as acting prime minister until the vote.

Fradkov said he asked for the dissolution of the government because with elections approaching, Putin needed to have a free hand to make decisions, including those concerning appointments.

Parliamentary elections are scheduled for Dec. 2, followed some three months later by presidential balloting.

"You might be right that we must all think about how to structure the government so that it better suits the pre-election period and prepares the country for what will happen after the parliamentary and presidential elections," Putin said.

The Final Chapter / Mania IankÚlevna
« on: September 04, 2007, 07:11:33 PM »
I wasn't sure where to put this so I thought I start it here.
What, if anything, is known about Mania IankÚlevna, Yurovsky's wife. What happened to her after he died? Is there anything written about her?

The Tudors / Kathrine & Anne
« on: June 10, 2007, 05:36:22 AM »
Here's a question:
It seems in the early part of their marriage, Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon got on quite well. And despite his wonderings, she remained devouted to him unto her death. Henry was driven to have a son. And it was when Katherine could no longer bear children that he really got concerned. Here's my question...had Katherine and Henry had a son that lived, would there have been a Queen Anne?

The Final Chapter / Questions about the missing bodies
« on: November 11, 2006, 11:03:30 PM »
Can someone please point me to the first official documentation/report that discusses the two missing bodies? All I have in Yurovsky's 1934 statement in which he says that they took two bodies to burn them. If I recall, he said that those two bodies were supposed to have been Alexei and Alexandra but that it turned out that it was one of the maids instead. That was his explanation for why the two bodies were not buried with the others. Is there anything else?
Thank you,

Having Fun! / Help!

Hi all,
I haven't posted here for a long time or colored. I've just been through a messy period in life but am now on the mend and back.

I have been trying to color photos again. I use Photoshop. For some reason, no matter what color I select on the color sheet, i get pink when I try to color. I have read through the basic steps Nerdycool and some of the others have posted, but I can't seem to get it right.

I was hoping I could get some help.

Thank you,

The Tudors / Elizabeth I.
« on: July 17, 2005, 08:30:04 PM »
I thought it was time to start a thread for Elizabeth.

Here are some of her facts.
She was born September 7, in 1533 in Greenwich Palace. The daughter of King Henry VII and Anne Boleyn.
The reign of Elizabeth began in November 1558 and lasted until her death in 1603. Her reign is referred to as The Golden Age.
She spoke several different languages. She loved hunting, horseback riding, music and dancing.
Maybe this will get us started.

The Tudors / Owen Tudor
« on: July 17, 2005, 12:44:46 PM »
I thought Owen worthy of discussion, since he is credited with founding the Tudor dynasty. Owen was from a Welsh family and served as a squire in the court of Henry V. After Henry's death, Owen married his widow, Catherine of Valois. Together they had five children, which began the Tudor Dynasty.

The Tudors / Eleanor Of Aquitaine
« on: July 14, 2005, 10:37:52 PM »
I have always loved reading about Eleanor of Aquitaine. I think she was a gutsy spirited woman who ended up ruling (basically) two empires. I am not sure if this it the appropriate place to post a topic on her, but she was married to Henry Plantagenet,
I am hoping this will be a forum where we can discuss her life, her schemes, antedotes and just have fun discussing an amazing woman.
One of my favorite stories about her is how she confronted Henry's mistress, "the Fair Rosamond," about her affair with Henry. Legend has it that she approached Rosamond with a dagger in one hand and a cup of poison in the other and told Rosamond to choose how she wanted to die.
I don't think that is how Rosamond did die and I don't even know if that is a true story or urban legend, either way it is descriptive of Eleanor.

I just purchased (at auction) a first edition of this book.   :) I collect first editions. I am so excited, I had to post it. I haven't read the book yet. Anyone care to share their impressions of the book?

Just finished reading the book A Princess in the Family. It is a very short book and an easy read. Although very little information is given about Granny Alina. I wish the author would have shared more of his memories of the woman. But anyway, it was interesting. I didn't want to start this topic under claimants because Granny Alina never made a claim. I doubt that she really was GDMarie, but she did live the life I would imagine that a GD would have lived had any of them survived the cellar.

The Myth and Legends of Survivors / Lenin/AA
« on: May 22, 2005, 09:11:29 PM »
I ran across this while reading Remembering Anna Anderson
Part II By John Godl:
"When the Berlin wall fell in 1989 and the east opened up the contents of certain secret archives were made known to historians all over the world," Dr. Von Berenberg-Gossler reports, "proving that Lenin had been extraordinarily interested in dividing the tsarist emigration. This is why Lenin deliberately supported "Miss Unknown" as much as he could, financially and otherwise, after she was pulled from the canal in Berlin in the early 20's. Its been found Lenin had a complete file on the Anastasia case in Moscow. I had already assumed this was the case during the course of the legal procedure I was leading in this matter. I even shared my suppositions with the court; however, I was not in a position to prove them at the time."

Does anyone know anymore about this? Did Lenin really fund AA?
