Having Fun! / "I love you people" moments?
« on: April 23, 2010, 10:11:40 PM »
Anyone ever have certain moments, Romanov-related ones, when you get filled with this kind of extreme interest and/or compassion? And you're suddenly kind of there? I was just now re-reading this good story my sister wrote about their last night and was kind of imagining them partially as my family, because of the closeness in both groups, and thought seriously about how scary it would be and envisioned it, as I do relatively rarely, as a totally plausible and true event--something to be startlingly aware of rather than have only read about. I guess I sometimes hold both our families in the same regard becuase we're rather similar in a way.

How about you? Ever have random moments when you feel inexplicably moved, or when your interest is suddenly rekindled?

Nicholas II / Nicholas II's opinion of Grigory Rasputin
« on: February 09, 2010, 08:02:38 PM »
(If this is already a topic, please tell me)

I don't believe for one minute that Alexandra F. had any sort of affair with Rasputin/Father Grigory. I think it's offensive to even consider the idea. But did Nicholas suspect anything of it? What were his fears on the subject? Are there any letters, notes, etc. to Alexandra or anyone else illustrating this? And what was his true opinion of Grigory Rasputin?

The Russian Revolution / Why doesn't communism work?
« on: January 31, 2010, 07:29:53 AM »
(I looked this up in the search bar and found no specific topic titled this)

I'm trying to understand this better. From an ordinary human standpoint, it seems communism would work among a small population of people, but not so with a huge population (such as Russia). Can anyone explain why to me?
However, if you think it does work, or should, to some extent, please share your thoughts, because I'm interested in hearing all kinds of opinions.

Thank you very much.

Olga Nicholaievna / Photos of Olga's letters
« on: January 23, 2010, 10:01:13 PM »
I'm looking for examples of Olga's handwriting--diary pages, letters--it photographs. It's for a collage I'm doing, and I can't seem to find anything!
Thanks for your help!

Imperial Russian History / Russian history: my take on what is learned
« on: January 21, 2010, 04:23:31 PM »
This is a thought that's been bouncing around my head for a while now. About Russian history (all that's happened, the Russian revolution, communist overtake, end of the Romanov monarchy, etc.) and the histories of many other countries with complex and perhaps difficult and sad backgrounds, what do you think is learned--including but also beyond a political and governmental standpoint?

It seems to me that, while studying mistakes made by monarchs and rulers in countries' pasts, we learn not only about what a ruler ought not to do, how not to think, and about political equality, but also about how long-held beliefs (for example, God-given right to rule and refusal to loosen the hold on the people) and opression cannot be right. If it was right, and the right way to deal with flawed human beings, then the system would work. History shows real humanity, real people; a very basic study of right and wrong. People's reactions over a large scale, such as in Russia, to unfair government, their anger and the tragic and brutal things that happen to people under a deeply flawed system (both the communist and monarchist systems were certainly flawed) show us in a big way what works for human beings. It shows us decisions and their consequences in the most basic a long, tragic, fascinating and endless study of human nature.

If this topic is too obvious or just senseless rambling, I apologize. :)

What is your take on the lessons learned from history (namely, Russian history?) Share your thoughts.

Having Fun! / "Russia" by Yulia?
« on: January 06, 2010, 04:59:24 PM »
I have no idea where to post this but I settled for this section...hopefully it's ok.

Can anyone find the lyrics to the song "Russia" by Yulia [Savicheva or Semichova, I'm sure certain which] for me? I've been looking for a long time and can find NOTHING about it.
I've been wanting to download it for a video also, so if you can find a download that'd be great.
But Just lyrics is fantastic too.
Thanks so much!

Having Fun! / Funny Photos II
« on: January 02, 2010, 09:22:50 AM »
There was another thread like this one, but it was very old and hadn't been posted on for a long time.
I'll start...

It looks like Anastasia is demanding a password to get by!

"Hey! What's that up there?"

A game of tag?

Having Fun! / Strange thought about home videos and trees
« on: January 01, 2010, 09:38:47 AM »
(This is a weird subject)
I was watching a home video of Nicholas II's family, and in it there was a tree rustling in the wind in the corner. And I thought that was really weird! The tree was standing right there where the real people were, at an actual moment, and it might be there still. Seeing the tree and knowing what it really looked like, rustling, despite the less-than-perfect quality of the video, made me realize that if they'd had modern-day-quality flim equipment, we'd see how they really looked while living.
I guess if you watch the home videos, you're getting as close to them as you possibly can, since it's footage of real moments that happened, but there's still a level of separation from the absence of color and sound. And even if I know aspects of their personalities and things they did, I can never know what they were really like on an ordinary basis because I wasn't there. It feels strange to watch the videos becuase you're both close and far to the real people.
Have you ever had a thought like this? It kind of remeinds me of the music from "Russian Ark", because it's peaceful and sort of happy, but sad at the same time. It makes their deaths even more tragic to think of them like this.
Just some thoughts :)

Tatiana Nicholaievna / Main talent?
« on: December 31, 2009, 11:31:34 AM »
From what I've gathered, all the girls (OTMA) were talented in music and art, but I'm wondering about Tatiana's main hobby...what was she best at and and what did she seek out to do? Apparently Marie enjoyed painting particularly, Olga was quite a reader and poet, etc.
Was there one unique thing she enjoyed doing above all, and was very good at? Her "main talent"?

Having Fun! / Balloon incident?
« on: December 31, 2009, 08:10:29 AM »
I read somewhere that one of the Grand Duchesses (meaning OTMA) was out walking with her nurse and demanded that the nurse take a balloon from a child on the street and bring it back for the GD in this true? If so, who was it and when did this take place?
Kind of funny story :)

Tsarevich Alexei Nicholaievich / Home videos of Alexei?
« on: December 30, 2009, 08:48:08 AM »
Can anyone locate some home videos of Alexei for me? There are two that come to mind that I can't find...
1. Alexei walking his dog and eating snow.
2. Alexei standing next to Nicholas and talking to him.
Thank you...I can't find either of these! I haven't seen very many videos of Alexei.

Having Fun! / Drawings of Olga and Tatiana yours too!
« on: December 29, 2009, 08:54:37 AM »
Here's a drawing I did of GDs Olga and Tatiana quite a while back, the big pair is my favorite...I think it was completed last year, it took a long time! Link:

I think Tatiana is expecially hard to draw, jus becuase of her interesting features.
Post your art! :)

Having Fun! / Can anyone tell me some specific piano pieces OTMA played?
« on: December 29, 2009, 08:46:31 AM »
If anybody knows some piano pieces OTMA played? I mean, referenced to in their letters or something? I always like to look at modern-day photos of places historical people were photographed in and think, "They were actually right there..." and it's kind of the same with music and quotes and stuff. I'd appreciate help!

Having Fun! / Yuliya Novikova--Olga Nikolaevna???
« on: December 29, 2009, 08:35:03 AM »
I watched "Romanovy:Ventsenosnaya semya" recently and realized that Yuliya Novikova, who plays Olga N, resembles Olga VERY's an example.

Ms. Novikova

GD Olga Nikolaevna

Anyone else have examples of strng resemblances between actors and portrayed Romanovs?

Having Fun! / Your favorite Romanov movie?
« on: December 29, 2009, 08:08:13 AM »
Note: I looked this up in the search bar to see if there was already a thread and nothing came up...if this is a repeated topic, I didn't mean it

I got "Romanovy: Ventsenosnaya semya" for Christmas and I love it! I think the music in particular is really nice and the acting is great as well. :D The actors all really resemble the actual family, especially Olga.
I've seen "Nicholas and Alexandra" and part of "Rasputin" with Alan Rickman in the title role but that's favorite is by far "Романовы. Венценосная семья" and I LOVE "Russian Ark" even thought it's not exclusively NAOTMAA.
What's your favorite Romanov film and why? I don't really know that many.
