Palaces in St. Petersburg / PoŽlle palace
« on: March 02, 2019, 03:17:14 AM »
I'm not sure if someone can help me here.  I am researching a fan that was owned by Catherine II.  On the double sided leaf a palace is painted.  It is one of items in the crown jewels sold in 1927. The description is:

"panorama of PoŽlle palace on the banks of the Neva (between St. Petersburg and SchlŁsselburg (Shlisselburg) )"

Does anyone know where this palace might be located in the St. Petersburg area?  It's possible it might have been destroyed since the 18th century.  I've had a good search around google but had no luck in finding this place and don't know of any books on the palaces of Catherine II.

Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this.

The Windsors / Queen Victoria's Journals
« on: May 25, 2012, 06:31:43 PM »
The royal archives have put Queen Victoria's journals in their various volumes on line at:

They haven't all been transcribed yet, but if you are up to reading the original hand writing scans of each page are online. It must have been a massive job to get them even this far online. It's great to see goodies coming out of the Royal archives like this.

Alexandra Feodorovna / Alexandra's formal jewelled fan ?
« on: September 13, 2009, 05:12:51 AM »
when Alexandra had formal photos taken in court dress she is usually carrying a jewelled enamel fan with an eagle head encrusted in diamonds.  This maybe a faberge piece, but there's no guarantee of it, though the sheer size of the fan makes me think it was made in the 1880s, perhaps for Empress Marie Feodrovna?  What I was wondering is if anyone knows what happened to this fan?  I've been through a number of books on both faberge and the imperial fans (there have been a couple of exhibitions in London which produced catalogues on this subject) but in none of them has this fan turned up.  Does anyone here know anything about the fate of this fan of Empress Alexandra?

I've included a photo of her holding the fan below:

I also recently found this fan box of Alexandra's. It seems a unique piece and I have to wonder if it could have been a companion to something like this.

I hope this is not off topic for this forum.

thanks!

Nicholas II / Re: Re: Photos of Nicholas II #4

Re Katmaox's photo of autumn 1901 - is that Alexandra?  I love the expression on her face.  It makes her look completely different.

Yes it is her.  You don't find many photos of her smiling (a bit like Queen Victoria that way) which is one of the reasons I selected this photo of her with Nicholas.
