A friend has recently published a book "A Smolny Album" (in Russian and English), which is a reproduction of, and historical information about, an album presented to her grandmother as an award for academic excellence upon her graduation from Smolny in 1907. There are apparently only 3 known albums existing today. The author is Nancy Kovaleff Baker, and the book is available on Amazon and elsewhere: ISBN 978-1-61811-892-9 (paperback) and ISBN978-1-61811-893-6 (electronic)
It's Just Wonderful!

Joanna and Sanochka, you are so kind with your comments about my photos. I particularly enjoyed taking the last one, of the old ladies raptly enjoying a 21st century film in a 18th-19th century palace room!
I took some other pics of the musical instruments on display, but I doubt the Imperial family played most of them as they are quite exotic.

I'm very glad you liked the photos. Joanna inspired it with her post of the wonderful old interiors! So many more pictures on the walls then....

Here are some photos I took of the Sheremetev Palace in 2007 -- hopefully, more rooms are now restored. Several rooms have very interesting exhibits of musical instruments, and in the back of the Palace is the wonderful museum apartment of Anna Akhmatova.

Thanks for yet another illustrated, fascinating story!

Thanks for your kind reply. My pastime is travelling to Russia/Ukraine and photographing contemporary views matching pre-1918 postcards. I've been at this since 1979, and now have a large postcard/photograph collection, but since the field is so large, my efforts are still spotty, even after all these years. I've used the Baedeker guides and some old Russia travel memoirs to find places. I'm of the generation whose grandparents left Russia pre-1918.
Presently, no blog, but perhaps in the future.
I'll try to send you a message (without running afoul of the Forum Administrator!)
