The Windsors / Re: The Queen's Christmas Broadcasts - IN PICTURES

Fascinating pictures. The shot of her in 1992 almost looks as if it's been done by a stunt double - somehow it doesn't look like the Queen at all!

If anyone is interested, I've posted several of the Queen's Christmas broadcasts (starting in 1994) at

There are no grounds at all for giving Peter a title. Nice to think of his wife-to-be as Mrs Peter Phillips rather than Autumn. I mean to say, Autumn as a first name? Can you imagine the Queen's face when told her grandson was marrying a chick with the name of a season? I can imagine Prince Philip - damn silly name, what! She's not that good-looking either. He could have done far better than that. Nothing worse than having ugly totty on ones arm.

The prospect of either Chelsea or Kate marrying either Harry or William is too awful. The mystique of monarchy evaporates even more!

I did feel sorry for William and Harry having their inane 'conversations' cruelly exposed yesterday. William needs to speak more clearly and get out of the habit of saying 'how ya doing?'. It was also cringeworthy the way a senior Army officer knelt by Harry, just because Harry happened to be kneeling.

Three cousins who contributed to the programme.

Countess Mountbatten of Burma:

Lady Kennard:

Lady Butter:

Anyone know exactly how Ladies Kennard and Butter are related to Philip?

His father Prince Andrew of Battenberg in old age.

His mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg in 1921. Beautiful but deaf as a post apparently.

Prince Philip's Four Sisters.

His sister Cecilie with husband and, in the first shot, their family

I don't know which sisters these are but they're obviously wedding photos!

I came across a 2-hour documentary about Prince Philip in my video collection the other day. It was originally broadcast in 1999. I thought it came over as quite balanced with interviews with King Constantine of Greece, Lady Mountbatten and two of his cousins, among others. It was interesting to hear about his family and sisters.

Comments from James Whitaker about Philip's alleged dislike for Princess Diana now seem wrong in view of their correspondence which has recently come to light.

I've taken a few screen grabs. The picture quality is not great - the tapes are knackered - but I'll post more if anyone finds them interesting.

More bad news about William in the press this morning. Am I the only one who is beginning to think that if members of the Royal Family are seen to be no different from everyone else that we may as well not bother with them? My tendencies are increasingly republican. Once the Queen goes, perhaps it's time to consign the monarchy to the past.

The thing which stuck in my mind when I visited Buckingham Palace 3 three years ago were what seemed to be water stains on one of the banquettes in the Picture Gallery. It seemed incongruous, somehow. On the whole, it was quite an enjoyable tour and I would certainly do it again.

Isn't this nonsense with the Queen all a storm in a teacup? On the whole the BBC is pretty reliable and one error doesn't damn the whole of their output. The clip does show something we don't often see - a rather tetchy Queen. From that point of view, it's quite refreshing to see something which isn't sanitised.

The Greek Royal Family / Re: Princess Katherine, Lady Brandram

The late Patrick Lichfield was recounting a very funny story on a TV programme last week on BBC2 about royal photography. At the wedding of Prince Pavlos, a Mrs Tucker was apparently allowed into a group shot as she was mistaken for Lady Katherine. The mistake came to light after Queen Anne-Marie queried who the woman was. Ld Lichfield told her it was Princess Katherine of Greece, to which Anne-Marie replied along the lines that as Queen of Greece, she should know who Princess Katherine was, and the lady in the wheelchair was not her! Mrs Tucker was wheeled out (asking 'who are all these people?') and Lady Katherine then wheeled in!
