The Tudors / Re: Romance between Elizabeth of York and Richard III?
« on: May 05, 2014, 11:54:28 PM »
Ok hasn't anyone thought up the fact that this idea of love between Elizabeth and Richard makes them both look bad? Not only does it trump on history of Elizabeth's actual marriage being a good one but it makes Richard and Elizabeth willing participants in incest of one of the worst degrees. Why would any Richard defender  want to use such a thing to try and make him look better?

The Tudors / Re: Henry VII

Henry VII is one of my favorite Kings. He was a good king who brought peace to England and governed well. Wanting to fine instead of execute is also a plus in my book. How such a same rational man with his sweet same rational wife could produce a psycho like Henry VIII is beyond me.
Also I think H7 was much better looking than his son who even when he was young looked like a bloated frat boy.

The Tudors / Re: Which of Henry VIII's wives...

How bout I am neither of his wives and instead I am Elizabeth of York or Isabella of Castille? Yeah, can I do that?
Anne Boleyn is my fav but I dont think I could stand living her life. She is Perseus by a man who won't take no for an answer, everyone hates her, loses 7yrs of her life waiting for her touchy feely king to marry her, then he murders her when she is no longer of use.

The next one would be Katherine Parr. Married 3x for political reasons; she had the good sense to not want to marry King wife killer but not the means to get out of it; he tries to kill her but has a change of heart. Her fourth marriage is to a man she loves who ends up sexually harassing her step daughter.

The Tudors / Re: What do you think happened to Amy Robsart Dudley?

I always assumed it was just an unfortunate accident. But it is suspicious that she dismissed all her servants, either she wanted a day alone and an accident happened, or she wanted to be alone for a purpose.

French Royals / Re: Queen Marie Antoinette, Part II

Marie Antoinette was tragic, but some of the blame for her fate was her own. She reminds me of Alexandria in encouraging her husband to not accept the changing politics around them and the changing role of the sovereign.

I am all for a good revolution that over throws tyrannical govts especially monarchies, but man Robespierre is just something else. He seems just as bad if not worse than the people at Versailles, except I don't recall the Kings whipping people up into a blood thirsty frenzy. How many people did Louis XIV XV and XVI execute during their individual reigns compared to Robespierre's terror?

In looking at all the portraits of all the wives someone said that by modern standards Anne is the most attractive. I tend to disagree and think Anne of Cleves is #1 with Jane Seymour being last on the list.
I was trying to read Starkey's book on the six wives but he is too misogynistic and attributes actions and thoughts to Anne that he has no way of knowing about. One that immediately comes to mind is that Anne assured Henry that his 1527 arguments against his marriage to Wolsey's counsel would be successful. According to Starkey everything was Anne's fault.

I find both Beatrice and Eugenie pretty, I notice Beatrice more because of those big beautiful eyes; but both girls are attractive and seem well adjusted despite the early 90's.

I believe Sarah is a moron and her money problems are her own fault, but why such animosity towards her daughters? I have heard of them doing nothing worse that partying like 20yr olds going to school and occasionally wearing bad outfits. They appear much smarter that their mother IMO and not worthy of such hatred in this thread.

The Tudors / Re: Henry VIII's wives and their physical attributes

This is the famous one, I think.

Bumping the thread.
I feel Christina is rather unattractive in that one portrait of her. Maybe she needs hair to distract from her face.
As for Henry's wives
Katharine- rather plain IMO but one of the better looking wives
Anne Boleyn-so many portraits of her and while they do have similarities, they change the facial features frequently and she ranges from average to quite pretty. Elizabeth does resemble her
Jane Seymour- the most unattractive of them all. Good gawd Henry must have been blind to choose this one. A double chin that sticks out a huge nose beady eyes and mouth that is too small for such a big face.
Anne of Cleves- based on Holbein's painting she was the most beautiful.
Catherine Howard- based on one portrait, that has been posted in here, she is quite pretty, based on another one where she is wearing a long black velvet dress trimmed with gold, she resembles a man.
Katherine Parr- one of the better looking wives, nothing to write home about, like Mary Boleyn or Elizabeth Woodville, but she is very pretty and with nice pale skin.

I don't think marrying a niece was ever done in England, they weren't Hapsburg's. I don't have much knowledge and I know marrying a cousin was prevalent, but I think marrying a niece/uncle was too far for the English.

I think episodes 8 just aired yesterday in the US. Episode 7 was my last, I just can't take it anymore. And I thought I was the only one who had a problem with the way the actors spoke. In ep7 I was so tired of the constant "his brother, George"..." He has me confused with my brother George!"....WTF who speaks like this? We are 7 eps in, and we all know who George is, there is no need to constantly state he is the brother of so and so.
I hate Phillipa Gregory and for months I refused to watch this series. I only started when I saw Max Irons and then I saw Aneurin Barnard and I fell in love with him. This drama is one of the worst I have seen recently and it makes Elizabeth Woodville deeply unlikable.

The Tudors / Re: Richard III and the Princes in the Tower

My top candidate is Richard, he is the one with the means motive and access. The other suspects didn't have the access and even if they did have motive and did the deed they would have two other obstacles to the throne. I have yet to hear a plausible explanation of how Henry could accomplish their deaths from another country; who did he get to do it for him? Did he sneak in the country, kill them, then sneaked back out? I do think its possible that one of them died of an illness or natural causes, but I doubt both did.

I say open his wife's tomb and put him in with her.
