The Windsors / Re: King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (nee Bowes Lyon)
« on: March 04, 2008, 01:09:24 PM »
If I am not mistaken, The Queen Mother did not like Clarence House - at least at first.  It was widely reported that she referred to the place early on as "horrid" and "little", and that she was disappointed to learn - after Queen Mary's death in 1953 - that she would not be allowed to move to Marlborough House on grounds of expense.

That is more of what I would have expected.  While I am sure most of us would be thrilled to live in a mansion like Clarence House, I would think the the Queen Mother's expectations would be quite different after living in Buckingham Palance.  With all the other royal properties such as Kensington Palace, St. James, etc. I think that true "palatial accomodations" could have been arranged for her.  It must have been very much a financial decision.  Also, its not like there was not room for her and Margaret to stay on at Buckingham Palace.  Why not?

Was it the Queen Mother's choice to move to Clarence House upon the death of the King?  Was there a reason for this particular residence being chosen over the many others accomodations available?  While it is certainly a mansion by any standard, it is not a palace.  Finally, one must assume she liked it there since she stayed so long.

One has to wonder, since the Queen considers Windsor her real home if she knows all the rooms like we that live in a tiny fraction of that number do!  OR perhaps she only spends time in a select few and rarely if ever visits most of the others.  I like to imagine her wandering through the "house" from basement to attic checking on the condition of things, but I realize this probably does not happen  ;)

What would have happened to all of the Quenn Mother's clothes after her death?

I would love to see a thread on Clarence House (I say that hoping that I have not missed one somewhere!).  Some interior pictures would be great.  Also, a floor plan.  Does anyone know what rooms are located on each floor?  Where were the Queen Mother's rooms?  Are they still intact after the renovations?

Alexandra Feodorovna / Re: Alexandra's Personal World

Did Alexandra keep jewels at all of the different palaces or did she carry her jewelry with her from place to place (not including the state jewels of course)?  Also, how did she "store" her jewels?  Were they kept in display type cases as other noble women did?

My apologies in advance if this has already been discussed before, but does anyone know where the above mentioned 3 rooms were located?  Any pictures?

Great question, Eddieboy!

Does anyone have an idea as to what Znaida owned at her death?

Other Palaces / Re: Hviodore

I have always been curious about Hvidore and how the former empress lived during her final years.  Naturally, after the grand palaces of Russia this was certainly a change.  However, did she feel happy at Hvidore?  Did she consider it a mansion (as it surley was and is)?  Did she feel it befitted her station in life?

Also, any additional information about the house itself would be greatly appreciated.  Such as, how big is it?  How many rooms & levels?  Was it considered a "modern" house?  How many servants were requried to run the house?  Did its size allow for guests and entertaining?

Thanks in advance for any information!

Very interesting, thank you Ashdean.

Any idea of how she spent her days?

I read somewhere that Clarence House was (is?) not even air conditioned.  Are the grace and favor residences, at least for the most part, up to date with modern conveniences?

Russian Noble Families / Re: Russian Nobility in exile: various questions

I have always wondered, did any of the affluant Russian exiles in Paris employ those exiles without means?  Give them shelter?

Does anyone know how Zinaida dressed in exile?  Did she maintain her previous style?  Did she wear her jewels?
