But...but...why is there a shadow under Prince Christopher's arm and shoulder?!   Haha, well I say, that's me done for! - I'm choosing one for supper right now!

Apologies everybody. How embarrassing!

If it's not photoshopped I'll eat my hat - Felix's shoulders are too blurred and obscured, if you look at Felix's clothes too, on his left breast especially, much detail has been added on at a later date.  His trousers and boots are also the wrong material too. One costume of the men is a lot more new than the other. The shadowing is also a problem so too the lines surrounding the gentleman on the right. Not too sure what the random post near Felix is doing either! Still, pretty cool photo though  :) I like the effort and the idea

Shall I go and get a hat?

I believe the parrot was called Popka aka Popov which he usually kept in his bathing chamber.

There was the hybrid horse (or mule) zebra cross he inspected but I can't find the photograph to hand! ...and of course the famous lovely elephant

My grandfather was Ukrainian, he didn't like the bagpipes much though! But I like them! they are perfect for pibrochs and must have sounded very solemn and stirring in war like they were used a long long time ago

Does anyone know how many times Nicholas II visited England and Scotland? also Ireland too. I can't say I know actually

Was that when Nicholas described Queen Victoria as a short little round ball on wobbly legs? I really can't remember the quote but it really did make me chuckle

I know Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich visited Scotland for sure, but I'm not sure about Michael Alexandrovich I'd have to dig out all my Mikhail books

I would have LOVED it even more if they were bagpipes!

To me it looks like a WW1 era film camera, seen here with Mikhail without it's tripod. This camera would be able to take motion pictures/film rather than photographs. Here are a few examples from the time for comparison. Other than that I'm guessing it could be some sort of telescope/geographical measuring device of sorts that could help in war time. I'm sure some of our more knowledgeable members on this sort of thing can help us out if not

This is true DNAgenie, and something to be remembered! But I do try and look for telling clues concerning this - hair partings, medal placements, rings, the way a uniform usually is etc. I find you can usually tell a reverse by people's faces too, they never look quite right. But it is definitely tricky at times! Hopefully I've not got too many wrong?

I put together some more instances of him using his left hand, if only to hold things

there is a painting and an accompanying photograph of him drawing inside whilst still a teenager but I can't remember which hand he was using. Though I'd presume the right hand if it was to be made into a painting afterwards

Unless he really was right-handed of course.

there's a picture of him playing croquet (I don't know if that helps or not because I know nothing about croquet)...but i've not seen any of him playing tennis. Hmm, I'm getting obsessed with this now - it's our quest to find out haha. I'm hoping someone on the forum pips in and tells us the final answer once and for all. In the meantime I shall do some more sleuthing...

Thank you for your replies :-) I'm sorry I didn't get time to write back before now. It is an interesting one, and a good point you bring up too!  Perhaps it was to 'save face' because that picture is a formal one - and he knew it would be seen by all. Perhaps, in private, and behind closed doors he was left-handed naturally but to 'save face' on official photos he made sure he looked right-handed because of the social stigma still attached to left-handers at the time? Or, perhaps he was just right-handed after all!  I'm not sure we will ever know, but I'd sure like to find out :-) Well, it may not be one of history's biggest questions, but it is a nice little historical snippet to think about - one that adds a little personal touch

It could just be sheer pure coincidence, but Grand Duke Mikhail used his left a lot, perhaps he was left-handed? What do we think?
