Nicholas II / Nicholas having a heart attack?
« on: November 24, 2011, 10:28:31 PM »
According to Fall OTR, Nicholas wrote to Alix on 26 of February, complaining of pain in the chest. Exact text here:
"This morning during service I felt an excruciating pain in the middle of my chest, wh. lasted for a quarter of an hour. I could hardly stand & my forehead was covered with beads of sweat. I cannot understand what it was, as I had no heart beating, but it came & left me at once, when I knelt before the virgin's image!
If it happens once more I will tell it to Fyodorov."

Could it seriously have been a heart attack, or just a bout of pain?

Olga Nicholaievna / Olga Describes New York
« on: September 29, 2011, 09:07:40 PM »
I want to know if the following is in fact true;

"Not long ago, she [Olga] wrote an imaginary description of New York. This description was made public and was highly amusing. In it she tells of twenty reporters called upon her at six o'clock in the morning, and of how Meesers [??] J. D. Rockefeller, George Gould, and Andrew Carnegie sent up their cards- 'gold cards with jewelled letters'".

From Reminiscences By Henry Clay Barnabee 1907, Harvard University

Does anyone know if it is true??

Tsarevich Alexei Nicholaievich / Alexei's 1916 Diary- French Help!
« on: September 28, 2011, 10:39:17 PM »
Okay, so I'm stuck on Alexei's diary's translation into French, from Le Tsarevitch
The phrase:
Mais  au lieu de consigner, ses souvenirs dans un joli cahier relié, comme il le faisait auparavant, il le note dans un carnet de moleskine, plus exactement c'est dans celui de Gilliard qu'il écrit.

My translation:
But instead of recording his memories in a pretty notebook bound like before, he wrote the notes in a book of imitation leather, more exactly it is in Gilliard's which he wrote in.

I confused myself :D
Anyone can help me? Aidez-moi s'il vous plaît! :)

Also, anyone have any entries they would like to share from it, and/or translation help? Me and Sunny can help with French, and multiple people can translate Russian :)

Alexandra Feodorovna / Alexandra's Routine
« on: August 23, 2011, 07:10:09 PM »
I couldn't find a topic on this, so I started one.

What was Alexandra's daily routine? She seemed to be an early riser, and a creature of habit.

Anastasia Nicholaievna / Shvybzik: Where did it come from?
« on: August 16, 2011, 12:53:26 AM »
I know Olga was the one who refered to Anastasia as Shvybzik, adopted from the German word for tipsy, but the girls only had a smattering of German they knew. How did Olga know such a word?

(I was torn where to put this thread, but since the name concerns Anastasia, I put it here.)

Alexandra Feodorovna / Alexandra's Clothing; Formal and Informal
« on: July 18, 2011, 04:31:45 AM »
I was looking through Massie's N&A looking for references of OTMA's dresses, and instead came up with Alexandra's clothing. Since Alexandra isn't a part of OTMA and there is no thread dedicated to her clothes (aside from a coronation dress thread) informal, or not, and decided to open this one up. Here I have an excerpt from Massie's book detailing Alexandra's  clothing.
"In the evening, Alexandra wore white or cream silk gowns embroidered in silver and blue worn with diamonds in her hair and pearls at her throat. She disliked filmy lingerie; her undergarments and her her sleeping gowns were made of fine, embroidered linen. Her shoes were low-heeled and pointed, usually bronze or white suede. Outdoors she carried a parasol against the sun, even when wearing a wide-brimmed hat."
(Also, her gowns were designed by St. Petersburg fashion dictator Mme. Brissac.)

Alexandra Feodorovna / Her Accent
« on: July 18, 2011, 04:03:41 AM »
I know Alexandra had a heavy accent when speaking Russian, but what was it? Lili Dehn states (in massie's N&A) "... I noticed that she spoke Russian with a strong English accent." (on meeting the empress in 1907 @ tsarskoe selo) where other accounts say she had a thick German accent. (I can't remember the name of the book, but I know it was reputable)

Having Fun! / What do you think/feel about your obsession?
« on: July 15, 2011, 08:46:41 AM »
I wonder, what do you think/feel about when you look at anything about the Romanovs? Or any other obsession that you have devoted a lot of time to?
My obsession is definitely the Romanovs, and I really want to either cry or laugh when I see anything to do with them. Most of the time I sit there with watery eyes and an eye to eye smile. XD  what about you?

Nicholas II / Nikolai's Letters to Family
« on: February 08, 2010, 08:22:49 PM »
I was wondering if there are any letters that Nicky wrote to Alix's side of family (Queen Victoria etc) but not to members in Russia (Ella etc). I know of one letter to Queen Victoria dated 26th July 1894-

My dearest Grandmama,
Your kind letter touched me deeply and I beg you to excuse me for not having answered it at once. I cannot tell you, dear Grandmama how very sad I felt when I had to leave you and my darling Alicky on that dreadful Monday night. It seems to me quite like a delightful long dream- my stay in England with you, the spell of which has suddenly been broken and I felt myself taken far away and left lonely to those never to be forgotten recollections./i]

This is just one paragraph though.
