Tsarevich Alexei Nicholaievich / Re: Alexei and his spaniel Joy

From most accounts I believe that Alexei's beloved Joy was, in fact, a male - as Sarushka pointed out, Gillard and Buxhoveden describe the dog as a male spaniel.

Ah, back to my favorite topics after so long - Imperial Pets!

I love the fact that we have new evidence into the bulldog's name - Ortipo/Artipo. Whatever his name was, he must've been a much-loved pet right until the very end.

In response to a question awhile back regarding the fate of the dogs at Ipatiev, it is known that Joy survived (Alexei's spaniel). Beyond that there is much room for speculation. A quote from Yurovsky states that Ortipo (as I shall now on refer to the pup as) was barking like mad in the house, and ended the dog's life by stabbing it with a bayonet. The "dog's death for a dog" quote was also related to this. The remains of Jemmy, Anastasia's Cavalier King Charles, were discovered during an investigation some time after the murders. The dog was identified by one of the childrens' tutors (Gilliard or Gibbes, forgive me as I'm a little rusty on my facts), however the rate of decomposition did not match up to the date of the murders. There is a disturbing photo of the dead dog that exists somewhere, which I hope not to see anytime soon.

Yet anyways, thank you very much for keeping this thread alive in my absence and I hope that all the new members have been able to learn a little about the dogs of the IF - a subject very dear to my heart!

One of my favourite Sissi anecdotes involves her three poodles, whom she sent via train to France (I believe) to have them clipped. :D

I just know I've seen it somewhere... it was really grainy though, and it looked like the photographer had gotten Maria just as she was sitting down.

... This might be just my mind going crazy, but is it possible that photo could be the full of this one?

Tsarevich Alexei Nicholaievich / Re: Aleksei had a dog named "Shot"?
« on: September 14, 2008, 11:51:59 AM »
The information I have about the two Ortinos is rather basic, unfortunately - from letters I've read on the AP, Ortino 1 was given to Tatiana by Dmitri Malama sometime in September 1914 (according to a letter written by Tatiana to her mother). In a letter from Nicholas a year later, he mentions "hearing about poor Ortino". Mitia and I agreed that this could be interpreted several ways, including anywhere from her death to simply a small accident. Greg King mentioned this in a thread awhile back and had two other letters in his post that I have yet to read.

Sadly no, I don't have a photo of Shot's grave. I have seen some of Eira and Iman's graves, but none of Shot, Bille or Shibzik.

Bear, thank you for posting that except. Joy sounds like a typical dog - very funny. I wonder if the footage of Alexei and the dog still exists somewhere, it would be a wonderful gift if it did.

I believe the photograph he was talking about is one of these:

I had another one in mind, but can't seem to find it anywhere.

Victory, she was quoting the book and it mentioned how Alexei noted how his puppy was getting fat and how he thought his dog looked more clever than him on one occasion.

I believe "Shvybzik" is the nickmane that was given to Anastasia - Imp. Rather cute that she named her dog after herself in a way!

I have only read one letter about Bille ("marble" in French) and haven't heard about her since. Perhaps this was part of a menagerie of pets like shot who have "disappeared", in a way.

AGRbear - No, I don't believe any canine remains were in the grave either. I'm not sure if the dog found by Soloviev is indeed Jemmy; I'm merely repeating what I've learned through this forum.

Victory_L - I have seen the photo, it's very sad to see that poor dog. After loosing my own dog I haven't been able to look at it again.

mitia and I have been in contact for awhile discussing the two Ortinos. I have to agree with FA, as far as I know there were indeed two Ortinos. Mitia and I are still looking into this, and I have also sent him this thread. Victory_L, I read the letter from Olga regarding the fate of Shot I and have seen the photos of the graves. It is quite possible that Shot 1 (and perhaps 2) are buried on the island with their markers destroyed, I wouldn't know.

So yes, dear Bille. I heard of this bulldog and, if I'm not mistaken, didn't she belong to the Tsarina?

Oh wow, this is a very new one for me. I'll see if I can get some research in - I'd love to find out what became of the two Shots.
