Tsarskoe Selo Palaces / Green Dining Room, Catherine Palace
« on: August 22, 2020, 06:27:55 PM »
The Green Dining Room in Paul I's apartments in the Catherine Palace currently has a ceiling that is completely white. Before the war, it had a painted ceiling. As I recall, the ceiling design was from the 19th century, and they decided not to restore it because it was not from the right time period. No one knows what the original design was.

Has anyone else heard something similar? Does anyone have a good photo of the ceiling from before the war? Every picture I've seen only shows a small portion of the edge.

Thanks!

Palaces in St. Petersburg / Re: Private rooms of the Winter Palace
« on: March 24, 2016, 09:55:44 PM »
I'm trying to track down any photos of Alexandra's study in the Winter Palace as part of my research on Faberge Eggs. In Faberge Eggs: A Retrospective Encyclopedia it says that many of Alexandra's eggs were in this room. While I've seen photos of some eggs in the corner cabinet in her Maple Study at the Alexander Palace, I haven't seen any of the others that were kept in the Winter Palace. I assume no photos of the eggs in this location exist, but anything anyone could post or PM me would be hugely appreciated. Also, if you know of any other places they might have been kept, that would be helpful as well. Thanks!

Imperial Russian Antiques / Faberge Egg Cases
« on: February 15, 2016, 07:08:32 PM »
I've been working for a while on a paper on Faberge Eggs and I'm trying to determine which eggs have their original carrying cases (typically lined in velvet and silk). I know the 15th Anniversary Egg, the Renaissance Egg, the Red Cross Egg, and the Karelian Birch Egg. Does anyone know any others for sure? Photos of the eggs in their cases would be most welcome. Thanks!

Palaces in Moscow / New Jerusalem Monastery Restored
« on: January 28, 2016, 12:26:24 PM »
The restoration of the New Jerusalem Monastery in Istra has been completed. Here are two articles from Royal Russia about it.

Does anyone have any pictures of what the restoration looks like under that huge tent dome? I've been waiting for years to see Rastrelli's vision restored!

It's very exciting that the Chapel is being restored! That's the last of the grand Rastrelli rooms that needs it, other than the baroque bedroom Catherine the Great used for a while. I'd never seen that additional room with the baldachin - I assume it's beyond the double doors in the main chapel?

It's amazing that after 60 years there is still so much left to restore.

Does anyone know when the Lyon drawing room at the Catherine Palace will be restored? They finished the adjacent Arabesque hall years ago, and I keep hoping they will finally make some good progress on Catherine the Great's lavish private apartments. Has any work been done at all the past few years? Any information is much appreciated. Thanks!

Annette,

I'm doing some research on the imperial eggs and their condition. When you go see the egg at Wartski, could you answer a question for me? In some of the photos of the egg, there is a bow above the sapphire on the stand, but in some of the photos the bow is missing. Since you can only see one of the three sapphires at a time, could you please tell me if only one bow is missing or if it's two? I would really appreciate it, thanks!

And I think I speak for all of us when I say we're a bit jealous not to work down the street from Wartski.

Chad

Tsarskoe Selo Palaces / Re: Catherine Palace Restoration

The question of the ceiling is something that has always bothered me, but if you look at the rest of Rastrelli's architecture in the palace, the current design makes sense. In all of the other large ante rooms, he used a flat ceiling. It was only in the smaller one story rooms that a cove was used. Making it flat makes it consistent with the rest of the architecture in this portion of the palace.

The other thing that has bothered me is that in the old pictures there are candelabra on either side of the mirrors on the lower and upper level while there currently are candles on only the lower. It makes the room look rather dark in the upper portion. Anyone have any idea why this is? Is it the original design?

Does anyone know where I can find a copy of Tsarskoie Selo: De Catherine II a Nicholas II, trois siecles de splendeur?  I have found several websites that sell it, but they are all French and do not ship outside of Europe.  I found one copy on Amazon.fr for well over $400 (too expensive) and I'm starting to get desperate.  If anyone can recommend a website that will definitely ship to the United States, I would be very grateful.   Thanks!

Does anyone know what work is being done at the Catherine Palace these days?  They finished the Arabesque Hall last year-has any progress been made on the Lyon Hall?  Any work on the Chapel or any of the pavilions?

I learned from the Royal Russia site of the very recent destruction of the 'Literary House' on Nevsky Prospect and that it sounds like other historic buildings have been falling in St. Petersburg as well.  Here is the link to the article-does anyone know anything more?  Is there anything we can do?  I think we all agree that St. Petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the world (if not the most beautiful) and its charm relies on the fact that the majority of it hasn't been touched for centuries.

Also, if anyone has any pictures of these destroyed buildings, I think it would be a good idea to perhaps start a thread for them.  It could be a useful resource to have them all in one place.

Does anyone know how far the restoration of the Peterhof Palace chapel has progressed?  I know we had a few pics on here almost 2 years ago, but I never heard anything else.

Does anyone know if Pavlovsk managed to buy the chandelier from Maria Feodorovna's boudoir?

Does anyone have recent pictures of the exterior of the Catherine Palace?  Last I heard, they were restoring the church domes and I believe it is done now.  I also think work was being done on one of the facades.  Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I posted a link in the imperial country residence news link about the auction of the chandelier from Pavlovsk.  Any idea if Pavlovsk is going to try and get it back?  That would be amazing!
