They were not common. It was more of a "Novelty" for the rich..

Well, she did manage to smuggle her vast collection of jewells out of Russia via a diplomatic bag (I'm working from memory here), and she finally left Russia on February, 1920 and died on September that same year. Maybe you are right, for her, rank was everything and although she was a Grand Duchess by her own right, by the time she left Russia, the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin was no longer either

Hi,

do you know who lived in the palace between 1850 and 1917?

I think it was a house for "Minor Royalty", it that is what you mean by your question, although I do not know who lived there. I understood it was the equivalent of a house  of "grace and favor" or something like that, like where GD Xenia Alexandrovna lived in England...
But if it was for "Minor Royalty" I am sure "Tsar Douglas" lived there.... hehehehe

"One ought to know how to do ones job" <GD Maria Pavlovna the elder>

I think this summarizes all.. She knew who she was, her place in society and what it was expected of her.....

I understand what is said here, but for discussion's sake I thought of posting the other side of the coin here.  I'm not that familiar w/ the details, just going by what I've read here...wasn't part of Miechen's "job" to support the monarchy and extended Romanov family?  It seems she conspired to advance her own line, established a rival court practically and undermined the reigning Emperor and Empress?  Or is that exaggerating the case?

Wondering,
T

I wonder what would have happened if Michen would have been successfull in be throwing Nichols II? She was as Regal and Elegant as  the Dowager Empress but I believe Michen was much more involved in Politics. Who knows?, maybe the Romanov would still be ruling Russia...

If I'm not mistaken Prince Philip comes from the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Gluksburg but adopted the Mountbatten last name (which originally was Battenberg). So their last name should be Mountbatten, but I believe it was Churchill's idea to adopt the Windsor surname in the best interest of the British monarchy... but that is subject for the Windsor thread...

12  Discussions about the Imperial Family and European Royalty / The Yussupovs / Re: Mistress of Felix, husband of Zenaide on: November 21, 2008, 10:16:33 AM
In my own very personal opinion,  I find  very hard to believe this story and I am not saying this story is not true, but I find hard to believe that nobody, not even Felix or anybody else wrote anything about Felix Sr and his “other” family. And it is not like people did not write anything about The Yussupov family. I have read good & bad stories about Felix Jr, but no one seems to mention anything about his Half brothers & half sisters.. The Yussupov  were not exactly low profile, especially Felix & Irina, and people wrote stories of them of the times when they were loaded  with money, like their travels, their parties and Zenaida’s Jewell's and of the times they were penniless, like Irina doing their laundry on the bath tub for they could not afford a maid or Felix Jr. making a big scene at an auction house (It was Christie's, I believe) the time the family's valuables were being auctioned by  Soviet Russian Government and I believe the last ones were written with a little of sarcasm for Felix Jr. was not the most  popular aristocrat among the Russian émigré community. He was very well known and respected, but not very well liked…. And yet, no one even had a comment (good or bad) about their immediate “half” family, although they lived very close to each other and according to the sources of some of the participants in this thread, they were in touch with each other, at least for a while……. I find this Intriguing indeed…

I don't think it was in the family when the revolution broke up, otherwise  GD Olga Alexandrova wouldn't have gone to live with her mother at Hividore..
