It is regretable that the Moscow Patriarchy has chosen to politicize the whole issue of the identification of the remains. We must all pray that Christian compassion will come to them which will allow all 11 individuals to be properly identified on their permanent memorials.

Perhaps this recent finding will do just that.

Perhaps we should all pray that it does?

Well the names are already listed in the chapel. The Patriarchy is a political organisation. Too many things influence it and sadly Christianity is not always where it should be on the list of its priorities. Whether it approves or not at the end of the day no longer really matters if the DNA matches the remains to the imperial victims. After all another Christian organisation thought the earth was flat for a very long time even when it has been proven otherwise.

dmitri

You always make my smile.  (I mean this in a good way)

No matter what I thread I go to there is a short post from dmitri very dryly commenting on whatever others are saying.

Very dry and very droll.

By the way, I believe that the "Flat Earth Society" still exists even today.  ;-)

If people had just l listened to Dmitri the might well have spared themselves a lot of wonder. He kept trying to tell everyone it was useless to believe in claimants and he was right.

Given their closeness in age and the condition of the remains, that may very well never be possible.

This is true. I wouldn't hold my breath on getting a 100% answer on who is who, it's just not possible at this point. And as someone else said, it doesn't really matter, if these remains are indeed those of Alexei and his sister - everyone is now accounted for, and that's the most important thing.

Can someone quote the section from "Last Act of a Tragedy" by V.V. Alekseyev where the shirt was left on Alexei's body? I had never heard of this before.

It's actually from the statement of Gregory I. Sukhorukov in 1928. I have the fully text of the statement at home, but I would need permission to quote more than a word or two because I did not do the translation from the Russian myself.

We have the English Edition:

"G.I. Sukhorukov, who was assigned to go help dispose of the corpses of the Royal Family the next morning. On April 3, 1928 his memoir:... "It was necessary to begin digging up the corpses (after the attempt to burn them the previous night)...the first thing we came across was the leg of the last Nicholas.  He was removed successfully, and then all the others. To be precise, it can be said that everybody was naked, except for the heir, who had on a sailor shirt but no trousers."

Thank you both for answering my question regarding the source of Alexis' shirt remaining on his body.

We will not know for certain until we see an actual inventory, but I recall seeing something about fabric matching the description of the sailor suit.

Pray do tell how do you know WHAT he was wearing that night? I don't recall ever seeing a detailed description of what anyone was wearing specifically.

What WAS he wearing then?

Well he was wearing "Gimnasterkas" thats the Russian  soldier shirt, I have read it . He had a light cold that night according to Alexandra`s diary, so he probably was wearing the blue and white stripped shirt that he wore under the sailor suit, just becuse Alexandra could wanted him wearing that because he was a little sick.
