When I visited the AP three years ago, I noticed the beautiful radiator covers.  I can't imagine the Soviets would have installed any that were that ornate.  I've never seen this question and I've always wondered if they were the ones that were there when the Imperial Family lived in the palace?  I've looked closely at old photos and can't tell from those either.  Does anyone know anything about them?

There are a few photographs of Alexandra posing for a sculptor making her bust.  In some of the photos you can actually see that the radiator covers look similar/the same as the ones you see today in the palace.  I think the photos are posted under a thread about the Mountain Hall.

I'm familiar with that photo, but don't recall the covers.  I'll check it out - thanks

Thanks for the link - actually, I've never seen that exact photo and yes, the covers are the same as now.

Is that one of the formal rooms? I've been through my AP photo file and can't find the painting behind Alix in any of the IF's private rooms.

It is indeed one of the formal rooms--the Portrait Hall. If you look at image 8 on the main's site page about the Portrait Hall, the portrait, window, and radiator match those from the other photo. The doorway is also in the right place.
