« on: September 03, 2007, 11:16:11 AM »
The Haga Sophia ("Holy Wisdom") was build under the Emperor Justinian (over the previous church  build on the site by the Emperor Constantine in 360AD) and consecrated in 537AD.Turned into a mosque during the Ottoman Empire,it is now the Aya Sofya museum.

Hi Lucien,

Magnificent pictures.....  Thank you very much for the links..

I have been to Istanbul twice and found the Turkish people so very hospitable and friendly.  I hope to go back again soon.

hagia Sofia is the best known of the churches here but two more that are in more complete states to give an idea of Byzantine religious culture are
Hagia Irini

and Chora

by the way I went to Tekfur Palace the other day.  It is just a shell now but there is a plan to completely restore it so that you can see a complete Byzantine Palace.
