Depends on which autocracy you are talking about, considering that Stalin was an autocrat himself.
.

Stalin was mentally ill toward the end of his life,  as was Ivan the Terrible, so these are the dangers of autocracy - no one can stop you if you are an insane autocrat and many many people end up paying for it with their lives. This is why autocracy is not a good thing in any way shape or form - any way you look at it - it is way too dangerous to put so much power into one person's hands, just in case at some point they turn out to be crazy  Wink.
Plus, as someone once said "absolute power corrupts absolutely"... We can observe this today to a degree too, alas, scary!  Smiley

I find it very interesting that Lord of the Rings is mention on this thread by many.

Here you have two big foot short guys who's lives are posessed by one small gold ring and a important fact of saving the world from real evil.....

There can be found in monarchs and dictators real evil as in Tsar Ivan "the Terrible" and  Stalin "the Bloody".

Between the two, J.A. McNeal would have written:  "I'm lonesome.  They are all dying. I have hardly a warm personal friend left.

My odd humor showing so bear with me or ignore.

It wasn't evil, it was untreated mental illness. The outcome is the same though  Tongue

Bear head is nodding.

Mental illness has caused a great deal of pain to the persons inflicted, to people around him/her, and, sometimes, as in the case of people like Ivan, Stalin, Hitler and others,  to the entire humanity and every creature of this world.

While the three you mentioned might have been clinically insane (Ivan certainly was), I don't know if that can apply to other murderous despots, such as Mao, Pol Pot, Mengistu, Milosevic, Mugabe, Suharto, etc. It seems that Lord Acton's maxim was correct: "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."

Yes exactly what I said before, no matter how you look at it - mental illness or just simple megalomania - autocracy is NOT A GOOD THING for anyone but the autocrat!

No I don't like Che.  He was a scumbag terrorist and a murderer and it makes me sick when I see brainless idiots who know nothing about history wearing red t-shirts with his likeness on it, like he's some kind of great hero to be admired. Pleease...

Speaking of that:

Ummmmm....
Apparently-- if we dont get back to topic ---we will be shut down, so please lets all try to remain focused.

The Choices are  Autocracy or Communism -- No third option, no provisional government, no Constitutional Monarchy --just the Communists or the Tzar.

Hey the topic is "what's your opinion", so any opinion can be expressed, am I right? The topic is not "what is your opinion about autocracy or communism only".

I also think it's quite ridiculous. I thought this thread was about opting for the lesser evil (of tsarism or communist rule), and giving your reasons for it. But those who then opt for tsarism, like me too, are accused of worshipping it.

As to The Motorcycle Diaries, I haven't seen it (yet), but as far as I know it's not at all about Che, the revolutionary, but about the experiences which turned Ernesto Guevara into the revolutionary he later became. One may or may not agree with his later "career", but I'm not surprised that what he saw on his trip across LA had the respective impact on him . . .

And it's not really a Hollywood production at all as far as I know. I think the director is Brazilian (don't remember his name now), and isn't it the same guy who directed the excellent film Central Station?
