I apologize ahead of time if there's already a thread about this somewhere (or if this is old news to some of you). But I'm just astounded by the striking resemblance the new Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to Czar Nicholas II. It's really incredible, if you put a beard on Medvedev they would look like brother's, or twins, at least in my opinion. They've even got the same hair!

I am not trying to get into any sort of political debate or discussion here whatsoever over modern day Russia, but does anyone else think this is pretty bizarre? Like there might be a reason behind it? I've read somewhere that he has a portrait of Nicholas II in his office as well, and Putin kept a portrait of Peter the Great in his office.

Here's some pictures to help you decide for yourselves:

This last one above just leaps out at me with irony because of the Romanov double-headed eagle crest on the front of his podium!  Tongue

I personally don't see a striking resemblance, but they do have the same hair lines!!

To be fair, you have to see more photo's of Medvedev to really see it  Tongue. Nicholas had a bit more of a "strained" face, like older looking I mean, but after a while their eyes looked so similar to me. Maybe I'm just seeing things  Embarrassed. The hair is definitely there though!

Well JesseM, I have to say that I do see what You see. They are quite similar in their looks but there is something about Nicky`s eyes I haven`t seen anywhere else. I drew a picture of him and before drawing his eyes I thought it was going to be easy but I was very wrong. It is very hard to capture the right proportion of his whole face.

Grand Duchess Ally, who is on Your picture?

Okay, okay, I submit! Tongue

They don't look EXACTLY alike. And I probably see more of a resemblance because I want to. But the fact still remains that they do at least resemble each other enough to almost look related, not that I'm actually suggesting anything.

But you're right about Nicky's eyes. Even with George V, who everyone agreed looked like his twin brother, his eyes were still noticeably different. They're sort of smaller, more focused. George V's eyes were a tad larger, and bulged out a bit more, identical beards though. I still say though, if you put the same characteristic beard on Medvedev, people would start speculating about his genealogical roots! Tongue

Ally, now that I look closer, that guy really does look quite similar to Nicky. Where is it from/who is it?

My father once joked about a picture of Medvedev in newspaper. He told that Nicholas was on newspaper.

The man on my pic is Polish actor Michal Zebrowski (love him love him love him!). You could see him in Ogniem i mieczem (With fire and sword) from 1999 or more recently in movie 1612 - about Polish invasion to Russia.

Are those films in english? Just wondering. If not, it's fine, I like foreign films (well, foreign to me Tongue), and I know a place that probably has those movies available for rent, or will eventually.

I'm really surprised.  I superimposed Medvedev picture over Nicholas II and the only difference I found was the shape of their heads.  Eyes, nose and mouth seem to be at the same distance.  I remove Medevedev's irises because he was looking to the side.  The bottom part of Nicholas eyes are smaller than Medvedev, still they both are very similar.

I think With Fire and Sword can be found if not in English, then with subtitles. Otherwise itīs in Polish. And 1612 is entirely in Russian. I have posted the trailer to film section

Thanks for the info GD Ally, I'll check the trailer out even though I won't understand any of it Tongue  Wink.

And Peterhof, that image is really amazing, although it took me a few seconds to make it all out visually. Thanks for making the effort to do that!

My first thought was the difference in the eyes.

I have a description that a friend of mine wrote about the difference between the eyes of George and Nicholas.  When I find it I will post it here.  I think she got it right.

Medvedev is much younger and less stressed.

I thought that Ally's picture was Brad Pitt.   ;-)
