Grand Duchess Maria is plumper than both her elder sisters. She was above Grand Duchess Olga’s height and hardly below the Grand Duchess Tatiana’s. There was something about her that was difficult to describe since her character was still forming. She was a very timid girl with big, dark brown eyes…During the Revolution when the Imperial Family was imprisoned, she had proved an utterly strong, vigorous and courageous nature.
I remember that when she happened to visit the hospital, she would go to the room where the wounded men lay and stayed there. For an hour or two she will not leave unless her elder sisters summon her. She spent time conversing with the sick, playing dominoes or any game which greatly interested her. Grand Duchess Maria was said to have a very similar personality with her great-grandmother, Empress Elizabeth Petrovna.

~Simeon Pavlovich Pavlov, a wounded soldier nursed at a hospital in Tsarskoe Selo

The source could be found in one of Matushka’s post in ‘Olga’s diaries’ thread. The memoir is in Russian and I translated it using an online translator. (I’m quite responsible for any mistranslation and am sorry for the wrong grammar in advance.)

Oh I know that one. there are jsut two striking things.... First .- it´s the first time I hear about Maria having brown eyes, but that could be because of the angle of light....
Great-grandmother Elizaveta Petrovna?Huh Who was supposed to be that?

I am also surprised with it when I read the translation. Maybe there are still many things we don’t know about Empress Elizabeth which only the Russians know.

But her great-grandmother's name is Maria Alexandrovna, not Elizabeth - except if the soldier talks about Princess Elizabeth of Prussia which would be very surprising.

I should’ve said great-great-great-great-great grandmother…or more. Actually that’s one of my mistakes (or the translator’s mistake because it gave me a result with the words “great-grandmother” only).  Do you mean Elizabeth of Thuringia? Oh I really don't know much about their ancestors...

Do you mean Elizabeth of Thuringia?

No, I meant Alix's paternal grand-mother - not Saint Elizabeth of Hungary.

Then, he propably means her - the daughter of Peter I of Russia.

Thank you, Siham for the answer!
This is the original text of the sentence with the words ‘Elizabeth Petrovna’:

Про Великую Княжну Марию говорили, что Она была похожа на Свою прабабку Императрицу Елизавету Петровну.

Now who would like too translate it correctly? Thank you very much in advance ;-)

About Grand Duchess Maria, it was said that she looked like her great-grandmother Empress Elizaveta Petrovna.

Thank you Nena. Smiley It seems the mistake comes from the original text itself...

By Sydney Gibbes:
The Grand Duchess Maria Nikoevna was a broadly-built girl ; she was very strong, and could easily lift me up from the ground. Her hair is lighter than Tatiana's, but darker than Olga's (Olga Nikolaievna had golden-brown hair, and Maria Nikolaievna had light-brown hair). She had nice, light-grey eyes, and she is very good-looking, but she became very thin after her illness. She had a great talent for painting, and she was very fond of drawing. She played the piano fairly well, but she is not such a good musician as Olga or Tatiana. She was modest and simple, and probably would have made an excellent wife and mother. She was fond of children, but she was a rather inclined to be lazy. She liked Tobolsk and told me that she could make herself quite happy there. It is difficult for
me to tell you whom she most loved — her father or her mother.
