I think she had to have some illness or something. Look at her wedding photo:
She was six years younger than her husband, but they looks there like mother and son!

No, Adelgunde wasn't ill. She died at the age of 87. I guess she was just unhappy and these negative feelings became part of her facial expression.
Her new family loved Adelgunde. Even one of her husband's granddaughters was named after her - Princess Maria Adelgunde.

Was her childhood unhappy ? Her mother Queen Maria Theresa did look a bit fierce in photos.

Her daughters always looked so sad and melancolic. Mathilde at least didn't have a good relationship to her mother. I don't know about her other daughters. But I think a big family and the financial situation and exile didn't make their lives always so happy.

I read that Ludwig III. was extremely strict and had a very distanced relationship to all his children. Adelgunde suffered a lot from the fact that she didn't find a husband, although three of her younger sisters weren't married either.

Does anyone know why this is--the lack of husbands? They weren't raving beauties, but neither were a lot of princesses. They came from an extremely well-connected and wealthy family--even after WW1. There weren't a lack of Catholic royalties--was it just timing i.e. too many princesses at the time and not enough princes?

Yes. Wars can do that to the Royal Marriage Market. Sad that they were not allowed to marry below their stature. It makes the example of Princess Elizabeth of Bavaria (daughter of Archduchess Gisela, granddaughter of Sisi) so much more daring as she married her love despite differences in social position. Would love to read more about her.

By the way, Adelgunde did sometimes smile in the photos.

Here's from engagement session

Yes. She looked better smiling. Don't know why that is so seldom...her husband always grins in photos.

Yes. See looked unhappy in the photos (most of the time), while her plump husband looks jolly all the time.

Yes. However her husband's ex wife was not a happy person either. Madi- Maria Theresa of Borbon-Sicily (niece of Sisi).
