I suppose so, but I would imagine it wouldn't be simple. You couldn't just walk into GARF, say "Hi, I'm Ritka and I've come to study Olga Nikolaievna's diaries. Let me see them please." as you might be able to do here or in the US. I would imagine there's a complex booking system, and probably a complicated pay system! If you were a published researcher/author it might make things easier, I don't know. Maybe one of the Russian posters can give us some insight on this. (I would love to visit GARF!)

Note the sarcasm.

Lanie, I think that Malama was in the lazaret in 1914-15. At the end of 1916, if my memory is good, he was not more at Tsarskoe Selo. It could be some other Uhlan. It seems that noone know nothing about Kassianov, I could not find nothing. And there is an other question: does anyone know Shah-Bogov, a georgian officer. He was 2 times at the lazaret for some months. Olga Nikolaevna liked him also very much, according to Valentina Ivanovna Chebotareva and other memories. What happened to him? Did he left some memories? And an other question: hat anyone full entries of Olga `s diary for 1915?
Georgy, it is totally out of thema, but it seems that you got married. Congratulations and blessings!!

As Georgy remark Olga is very respectful for "father Grigory". I read an interview of A.N Hvostov, minister in 1915. He told something as "only the Grand-Duchess Olga is against him (Grigory Efimovich) and it cause a lot of dramas in the family". Is that really right. Sounds strange. At the same time, it could be an interesting explanation for the complains of the Empress, when she wrote that Olga do not obey her and so on. Any information?

Matushka, thakyou for your blessing and well-wishes. Please pray for Olga and myself.

I suspect that Olga N's conflicts with her mother in 1915 were probably no more than the usual late adolescent generation gap things. Also she had become anaemic and nervous from work in the lazaret, so maybe the Empress thought Olga was neglecting her duty when the girl was genuinely not well. Perhaps. It is also true that Olga was the most aware of things that were going on out of all the children, so it could be that she had concerns about Rasputin, but still realises his importance to the Empress and her brother's life. I feel if she was as astute as people say she was, she wouldn't have ruffled her mother's feathers by openly being against Rasputin. Whatever she may have thought of him (and the 1916 diary suggests she respected him), she seemed genuinely shocked and upset by his murder. Maybe she could see it would have very grave repurcussions for all.
My apologies I still haven't translated the other two entries from that site, as have been busy.

I found this photo of Olga's last diary in Peter Kurth's book, Tsar. Can anybody help me translate it? My Russian is decent, by my skill in deciphering Russian handwriting is rather poor...

sorry I can't help you, but that's a pretty cool picture! I've only seen it much smaller.

If no one answers, I would suggest a pm to Georgiy, who I have found to be good at everything.  Wink

I can't read Russian unfortunately, otherwise I'd be more than happy to help you. As Margarita said, ask Georgiy, he will probably be able to help you. I don't think it will be easy though for even someone who reads Russian due to her handwriting.

I've been studying Russian for a few years now and am fairly decent at translating, but I'm having some trouble with this one. Unfortunately I'm used to very "standardized" script, so it's the handwriting that's holding me up. Still, I'm giving it a try anyways! If I can figure anything of worth out I'll post it ASAP.  Smiley
