Here's the picture where you can see the 3 pictures. I think there's also the Winterhalter of Helena, Alfred and Louise.

Is this the Prussian family portrait Angeli painted ? I had always thought it was a Winterhalter ...  Huh

Oh my Lord Keith, you don't realise how much that photo of Eddy means to me. I don't obsess over his death, but I had often seen the image of him lying so peacefully, surrounded by flowers, in my minds eye and knew that Queen Alexandra would have had photographs taken. I know this might sound strange, but I'm actually glad to have seen this photo. The scene is more beautiful than I had imagined and I now understand why some relatives keep photographs of their deceased loved ones. It brings peace and closure somehow.

I'm glad it posted it. I was skeptical, knowing it was fairly common practice at that time, but today people look at it as morbid.

Death pics (together with death masks) were common practice indeed among royalty, especially during the XIXth century I believe. Nobody would have thought of them as weird at the time. Some of them look really peaceful and quiet (like the one of Eddy) but others can be rather disturbing (the one of QV's cousin Victoire Nemours I find absolutely horrible !).

As promised I spoke to Andrew Cook on Saturday.  His book on Prince Eddy is now available in the UK and, he reckons, will probably be out in the USA late 2006.

I've just seen the Eddy deathbed photograph and gasped as well.  I never knew it existed and I don't believe it has ever been posted.  He does look peaceful, and we know the room was quite small and cramped by royal standards.

Baby 'Eddy' in the second photo never looked right to me... You can see that the shadow is falling oddly on the baby's face, it's more than likely a fakie and may not even be Eddy at all. In the Frances Dimond book on Queen Alexandra, she mentions an early photo of Eddy that Bertie was trying to have made for Alix as a surprise, but for some reason they were having difficulty  getting a good likeness of Eddy. Bertie then told the photographer that he could use any baby's face, it didn't have to be Eddy's since all babies look the same when they're that young!  Shocked Unfortunately history has never recorded whether another baby was used---or if Alix ever found out! I realise this isn't the same photo mentioned in the book--but we know that at least Bertie wouldn't have been averse to using another baby's face if Eddy wasn't up to performing that day!  Grin

In other pics of royals holding babies the baby doesn't look right to me either. There is one of Ena holding a baby that looks like that one of Bertie, Alix & Eddy. The baby just doesn't look right!  Huh
