Probably on the Standart.  It was taken in 1914 during the Russians trip to Romania in order to see if Prince Carol (who would be Crown Prince before the year was out) would propose to Olga Nikolaevna.

OK, I know it's the tsarevich ::) but what is the name of the other man? (His tutor, by the look of it.)

In Prince Michael of Greece's Family Albums, on page 206, there is a picture of Alexei with four of his teachers.  This one looks very similar to the one which is identified as Peter Petrov, tutor of Russian language and literature, although the angle and the way he is looking up here make him look a bit more "grumpy" in this picture than the one in the Family Albums.

Sincere regards,
Tasha

What room was that photo taken in? The Tsarevitch's classroom?

I'm not quite sure, but I think that that picture was taken in Stavka.

It looks like Gilliard is reading something to Alexei :)

Does Alexei have that hat but in other colors? I think I saw a black one like that!

You did see him with a black cap. It was the same cap really : Navy regulations said that during « summer » (beginning… May 1st if I’m not mistaken!),  the black sailors’ caps (and Navy officers' caps too) had a white cap cover which covered only the top part of the cap.

Here is the original cap without it’s cover. This cap came from the Alexander Palace so it may have belonged to the tsarevich.

Clockworkgirl21 : until World War I broke out, Alexis did wear his sailor uniform from the « Standart » very often, even on land. It’s the uniform he wore the most often, probably almost everyday. Here is a photo showing him on horseback wearing the sailor‘s cap with the white summer cover.

Sadly enough, he wasn’t allowed to ride on horseback but he did have his picture taken as if he was!

thanx Daniel Briere!

I was just wondering what is the stick that is beside the black sailors cap you posted?

The « stick » below the sailor cap is a Navy officer dagger (« kortik » in Russian). At first, it was worn only by Navy officers with everyday dress (but NOT by sailors). Later it was also worn by Air Force officers and, during the War, by some Army officers. Although Alexis had an officer’s parade uniform from the Navy Guards, with a miniature saber, I have never seen a photo of him wearing a dagger like this, so I don’t know why it’s on the photo (the book where it’s from doesn’t say who it belonged to).

As for the uniform Clockworkgirl21 posted, it’s from « Her Majesty Empress Alexandra Feodorovna’s Guards Lancers ». On her photo, the silver cloth officer sash (which was worn over the sword belt) is missing. Alexis was colonel-in-chief of many regiments and military schools. He was also enrolled in many regiments that « belonged » to his father, grand-mother and mother (with the rank of sub-lieutenant). He was enrolled in his mother’s Lancer regiment on the day he was born. I have seen photos of Alexis in uniform from many if these regiments but never in this Lancer uniform. Probably some were taken and could be found in the archives. Here is his own miniature czapka (Lancer helmet) that was worn with the uniform:

It may just be the way the photo was taken, but the uniform looks like it was mad for him when he was quite small, four or five? I've seen a few images of him in "The Romanovs: Love Power and Tragedy" as a little boy on the Standart with his father wearing a uniform that might have been this one.
Men are haunted by the vastness of eternity. And so we ask ourselves: will our actions echo across the centuries? Will strangers hear our names long after we're gone and wonder who we were? How bravely we fought? How fiercely we loved?
