There are quite a few photos of Aleksei with his sailor nannies, so we'll probably need some more information. Do you know if the man was Nagorny (tall and slim) or Derevenko (shorter and stocky)? Can you tell us something about how they were posed?

aw i always liked that picture. I don't know the story behind it, though . It is kind of sad because it looks like he is surrenduring.

IMO, he's just goofing off for the camera. He's in bed -- you can see the striped cover behind him -- wearing a nightshirt. It could very well be during his last illness in Tobolsk.

Robert Alexander's book, The Kitchen Boy, has a brief scene describing this photograph being taken. Fictional, of course, but quite plausible.

oh i remeber...

was it true that leonka and him became friends?

is that the part in the book, where he stands up when he isn't supposed to?
So keep me awake for every moment

It was definitely taken at Tsarskoye Selo. That's the rear of the Alexander Palace's semi-circular hall in the background. I'm not certain of the year, but I'd guess 1915 or 1916.

The photo was taken in 1913. I'm pretty sure that's Aleksei.

There is another photo from the same day of Olga A, NII, and Tatiana Nikolaevna swimming in the same place. Tatiana's hair is short in that photo and she's not wearing a bathing cap, because she'd had her hair cut due to typhoid earlier that year.

But I think it is Aleksei in your photo because women's bathing costumes had short sleeves covering the shoulders and a little bit of the arm, and men's had only wide straps over the shoulders. The person third from left in your photo appears to be wearing a bathing costume with straps, not sleeves.  :)

I'm not 100% on those.  They look like they were taken in captivity around 1917, it might have been earlier than that though.  :-\

I believe they were all taken in 1915-16. As far as I know, the only one that might have been taken in captivity is the head shot of Aleksei, but I think it was more likely taken at Stavka.
