Ekaterinburg locations: Popov House, Hotel Amerika...
« on: April 13, 2004, 11:06:35 AM »
When I was last in Yekaterinburg Avdonin took us to the Popov House.  We had a long meeting and were told many interesting things by a group of people.  Penny I am sorry to say I was so tired that I couldn't concentrate and I didn't take notes.  They promised to send on lots of things and a complete 'report' but I never got them.

Next year I plan to go back and get as much new information as I can - maybe we should all go at the same time.  I know they say they have new accounts and other evidence.

We went by train to sort of trace the journey of the family.  It was very long, but interesting.  The train stations in some of the towns along the way were great places to see people and buy things on the platform.

The long hours gave us all a lot of time to talk and read.  Entering the Urals was interesting, nothing much has changed along hundreds of miles - it must look the same as it did in 1917-18.  I'd go that way if you have time.

You can also see where Nicholas, Alexandra and Marie arrived as well as the girls when they got there.

The way back we flew on a Russian carrier.  The airport was not fun - long delays, but it got us back a lot faster.

I recall that Sednev (the Kitchen boy) was sent to another house close to the Ipatiev house after Yurovsky had sent him away to "see his uncle". Did that house have a name? (I need this information as soon as possible)

It was the house across the street -- Popov House. Leonid Sednev was seen crying in the hallway in the early morning hours following the murders.

I am curious to know if the Hotel Amerika still exists in Ekaterinburg, and if so, does anyone know where it might be located?  I will be there this March and would love to see it, whatever the building may be used for now.
Thank you!

The Hotel Amerika was located on the Voznesensky Avenue (now Karla Libknekhta street). A little bit further on the avenue was the Ipatievskaya Dom, on number 49 (Where is now the Cathedral). But I don't know if the Hotel still exist...

Didn't the Amerika hotel send a fake escape note to the Imperial family and tricked them into believing that they were going to escape, like Yurovosky did? I am not sure if the Amerika hotel exist now, but I think it is across from where the Russian Orthodox church is (location where the family was murdered).

I was in Yekaterinburg for five days this past April, taking a full Romanov personal tour starting with Tsarskoye Selo and ending with Ekaterinburg.  Just south of the Church on the Spilled Blood there is a house with a plaque stating "House of Popov."  Does anyone have a picture of the Popov house (where a lot of the Imperial jewels/film/personal belongings went,) or does a picture of the house exist?  The references are vague, and I am just curious if the house I walked passed and photographed is the same house.
Many thanks!
If you wish to see the pic, I will post it.

Please do post it, Dutch.  I  am not in any way sure, but could this be the  hose accross the street from Ipatiev?

Hi Robert,

I can't seem to be able to upload the picture, but here's a link to my Facebook which takes you directly to the photo (as well as many, many more from the travels.)  I just now realised it's from the side of the house, but hopefully it will give an impression of what it looks like.  Due to the proximity to the Ipatiev house, the age, and the odd reference to Popov on the plaque on the front of the building it makes me wonder if it isn't the house?

If anyone can teach me how to upload photos it would be much appreciated!

I did a little Google search, and the Popov  House is a museum to the inventor of radio- Alexander Popov.

Thank you!
However, I have been to that museum, and it's on Popov Street.  This house is on Karla Libknekhta, adjacent to the site of the Ipatiev house, and it's in terrible, neglected condition.  Now I wish I had stopped in and asked!
