Nickname Lex?

IN the Anastasia Pictures, there was a picture of Alexei with his mother and sisters- Anastasia and Maria.

What all of you thing of my nickname for Alexei? to me "Lex"  soulds more today and in english, i supose.

Yes, I do think "Lex" is more modern. I think the tsarvitch thinks it is better thank "Sunshine" or "Baby"!

The Heir himself would have been more used to hearing within the family circle the standard Russian diminutives for 'Alexei' (Aleksei, Alexey):

Alyosha, Alyoshka, Alyoshenka, Alyoshechka; Lyosha et al as well as just plain Lyosh; Lyolya; Alyochka; and there is also a derogatory form I cannot imagine being applied to the Tsarevich; Lyoshok.

The use of 'Alex' in Russia specifically as a short form of Alexei was not unknown in the 1940's.

He was more apt to be addressed as 'Alexei Nikolaevich' by those given permission to do so,  presumably pronounced 'Alexei Nikolay'ich'.

'Lex' is modern, affectionate in its own way, and even sweet, but the Heir himself would never have imagined such a nickname.

Dubbing the youngest member of the family 'Baby' is a common Russian practice, however -- it is not unheard of for folks in their twenties to be referred to in those terms to this day, so Alexei Nikolaevich was not alone.  Can anyone actually cite an historical reference to the Tsarevich not liking the nicknames his parents gave him?

I don't know how historicly correct it was.  

But i'm not Russian, so I really don't know all the nicknames for "Alexei" .

Alexei's nicknames by his parents were: Baby, Sunshine and Sunbeam ( the last ones seem the same).

"Oishka". Maybe this is a mistake for "solnishko" (Sunshine)

I think you're getting him and the Tsarina confused.   Alexandra was sometimes called Alix.

Alix was the Tsaritsa's name before she became Orthodox. After that her name was Aleksandra, but the Tsar often wrote about her and referred to her as Alix throughout their lives together. She was called Alix rather than Alice (after her mother), because Princess Alice hated the way the Germans mispronounced her name.

Sorry -- I don't like it. Alexei would never have been called "Lex." His nicknames were Baby, Sunshine, and as he got older, the Russian Alyosha.
