The photograph of the stairs are particularly emotive.

Think of the 22 year old Alicky of Hesse descending those stairs - accompanied by her heartbroken, sobbing, red-eyed mother-in-law - en route to become Empress of all the Russias.

Brian,

Thanks for the great pictures and especially the floorplans.

Thanks.

I'm a little confused so maybe someone can answer these questions.  Grand Duke Paul had a Palace,  what's the name of it and where was it located?  Grand Duke Sergi and Ella had a palace, what's the name of it and where is it located?  After Paul was banished what happened to his palace?  After Sergi died and Ella became a nun their palace went to Drimiti.  But he could not have sold it because he was in exile after Rasputin's death.  Marie, his sister sold it.  But did she sell Grand Duke Paul's palace or Grand Duke Sergi's palace.  In Marie's books she stated she sold the palace after the revolution.

taffie,
Grand Duke Paul once owned a palace at 68 English (Anggliiysky) quay, but after his return from exiled built a palace in Tsarskoe Selo and lived there with his wife.  I am not sure if he continued to own the palace on the English quay, but I would presume this is the one his daughter would have sold.  His wife would have still owned the TS house until the revolution.
Dimitri inherited Sergi & Ella's (Beloselsky-Belozersky) palace on the Nevsky Prospekt at the Moika Quay. Dimitri had converted it into a hospital during the war. and owned it until the revolution when it would have been appropriated by the state. I don't believe Marie could have sold this palace.

Actually, he did have Marie sell the Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace just before the Revolution broke out. Two years after that it was nationalized.

In the letter to Felix Yusupov GD Dmitri wrote

And my delightful rooms! My beautiful lounge with the grey divan and the tiger skin! All this is far away. I had to sell the house, as one must live somehow, and all my furniture has gone to the devil. I am sorry about my rooms.

This letter was written in Persia in April 1917. Is he talking about Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace?

Most likely he said about his apartments in the Palace as he didn't have another home.
