Help save the Broadlandsarchiv - Please read
« on: December 17, 2009, 04:18:31 PM »
Hello everyone

I've posted the same info on the Windsor Thread, but I think it is a very important to share this. The Broadlands Archiv contains very much information about the Battenberg and also the Hessen-Darmstadt Family. I visited the Archiv in 2007, it would be a shame if all the Documents would be sold to different places/people. This is what I understand what the Trustees want to do. Does anyone know who is on the Board of Trustees?

Greetings from Darmstadt

Vanessa

An outstanding collection of international significance

Dear colleague,

For more than 20 years, the University Library has held in its Special Collections Division the Broadlands Archives. The archive contains some 4,500 boxes, dating from the sixteenth century to the present, centred on the Temple (Palmerston), Ashley, Cassel and Mountbatten families. It is an exceptional collection, including many materials of the first rank for the history of the UK and its relations with its colonies and foreign powers.

The Mountbatten papers are effectively the foundation archive for the modern states of India and Pakistan, and in addition illuminate Britain's first major act of post-war decolonisation; the papers of the third Viscount Palmerston include some 40,000 letters, many from his private correspondence as Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister; and the diaries of the seventh Earl of Shaftesbury, reformer and philanthropist, are one of the great monuments to social progress in Victorian England.

Our fundraising campaign

The Trustees of the Broadlands Archives have determined to sell the collection and have offered it to the University. The expectation is that if our negotiations fail, the collection will be sold at auction, and may well be broken up and dispersed, with many parts not finding places in public repositories. The net price is a substantial one, 2.85 million, and we believe we have about 6 months to complete the transaction. The University is undertaking a major fund-raising campaign to assure the future of the collection. It is working with funding bodies including the National Heritage Memorial Fund, but will need to raise considerable sums from other sources.

Please take some time to support our campaign in one of the following ways:

This sounds alarming -if only I have a great amount of money, I'm going to buy the whole collection in care of Broadland archives and make my own public library to exhibit those!
The archives care for lots of pictures  and documents about the Romanovs and the other royal and Imperial houses, too, right? Most of the pictures in "The Last Empress" book was taken from that archive.
Oh, but as of now, I am fully money-less being still a student. God help the archives.

Amazing colored fotos  by the most wonderful Yelena Aleksandrovna. Endless thank you very much!

Indeed ! I hope the University buys it. It would be a shame to have the collection auction off...

The petition will be sent to the National Heritage Memorial Fund to show the public support for the Archiv.  If you don't want to donate this is also a way of showing your support, so please take the time.

Greetings from Darmstadt & everbody a Merry Christmas

The Broadlands Archives will stay at the University of Southampton- Hartley Library! They raised the money they needed. I received a letter today from Prof. Woolgar who informed me about this. I am so happy!!

I found this article and copied it so you can read more about this success.
