The same artist who captured the image of grave digging in the front of the Alexander Palace, also painted a gruesome picture of Jews hanging from the lamp-posts in Sadovaya and Orangerie Streets.

There are photographs of these gruesome scenes to be found in the remarkable, virtually unvisited by Westerners, City of Pushkin museum.

tsaria

Tsaria, this wonderful museum was just around the corner from where I lived in Pushkin and I visited it several times (even made friends with some of the staff  :)) - but I didn't come across these photos.... In a way I am glad... I am not so sure I would have wanted to see them.  :-[

It is a BIG step forward that the Pushkin authorities have permitted the erection of the Memorial to the Jewish people.

Sadly, no matter how gruesome those photographs are, they do depict a shameful page in Russia's history. Such images must not be hidden from public view.

I agree, since there are still people out there (in Russia and in the west) who still claim that the holocaust never happened and was nothing but Jewish propaganda. I even saw a book at the local Pushkin bookstore - prominently displayed - about this very subject (the author claimed that it never happened)... But I have a feeling that even with archival photos some people will just say that they are fake, just like they say that the videos are fake... There will always be a certain faction of people who would much rather believe conspiracy theories than facts (as we all well know from this forum  ;)).

Anyway, we digress from the topic.

Thanks for answering my question. I am glad to know there will be a memorial in Puschkin!

Oops! Glad to know that there is a memorial! I misread Belochka's post thinking another one was to be built!

It`s mistake of coarse. You see the beautiful Chinese palace in Oranienbaum.
In the first quarter of XX century there were a lot of postcards publishers that had one goal only - to earn money.

The position of His Majesty's Photographer was held by Alexander Iagelski (sp) who in 1900 was granted authorization by Nicholas II to include all court filming. He opened this studio in Tsarskoe Selo and it was called K.E. von Gun (sp). A. Iagleski lived in 1902 in Tsarskoe Selo in a house belonging to the von Guns.

Karl von Hahn (spellen Gan in Russian) also was an Imperial Warranted Court photographer. He almost drowned on board the Standart when it ran aground.  Bob has several of his photogaphs in the archives.
